Personnel: Dave Davies (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Andrew Sandoval (guitar, background vocals); Kristian Hoffman (keyboards); Dave Jenkins (bass, background vocals); Jim Laspesa (drums, background vocals). Recorded live at The Bottom Line in New York, New York in 1998. With the Kinks no longer touring, Dave Davies barnstorms the U.S. as a solo act. On these nights at New York's Bottom Line in 1997, he and his young band were on absolute fire, cooking up hard rocking renditions of Kinks classics, some penned by brother Ray, with an equal measure of Dave's own work thrown in. Demonstrating how real rock & roll is played, the band starts out jumping with "I Need You," follows with the kick of "She's Got Everything," and only gets better. "Wicked Annabella," "Picture Book," and "Death of a Clown" are more than nostalgic mid-set showings. After 24 songs, they unbelievably blaze through two rock-kid anthems, "David Watts" and "I'm Not Like Everybody Else," and they even manage to suck another life out of the heavier than heavy monster riff of "You Really Got Me." One half of a brother act shouldn't be allowed to be this good. ~ Denise Sullivan The fame and fortunes of Kinks guitarist Dave Davies have been overshadowed by his brother Ray, lead singer and principal songwriter of that band. Dave has never quite had his due as a contributor to one of the 1960s and '70s best mainstream rock bands, even though he wrote one of the Kinks' best tunes, "Death Of a Clown," and provided the band's sound with much of its rock & roll weight. The live ROCK BOTTOM finds Dave Davies fronting a lean, punchy outfit at New York City's legendary Bottom Line, playing a mixture of Kinks classics, obscurities, and songs from his solo albums. The program spans the Kinks' early American R&B roots ("Beautiful Delilah"), the melancholy mid-'60s landmarks ("Too Much on My Mind," where he sounds quite a bit like Ray), their wry later '60s highlights, such as "Picture Book," and Dave's solo career originals, like the wistful, slightly Band-like "Strangers." What Davies' voice lacks in subtlety and nuance, he more than makes up for in enthusiasm and good-natured earnestness. He also gets to cut loose on guitar, letting loose grunge-edged power chords, and upping the energy-level considerably on "All Day and All of the Night" and "I'm Not Like Everybody Else."

$11.99 Live: Ed Kowalczyk (vocals); Patrick Dahlheimer, Chad Gracey, Chad Taylor . Additional personnel: Shelby Lynne (vocals); Jerry Harrison, Michael Railton (keyboards). Liner Note Author: Ed Kowalczyk. In the wake of Nirvana's breakthrough in 1991, countless bands that were consigned to the college-radio ghetto had a chance to hit the big time, and Live were in a unique position to catapult to the top of the heap. Unlike many of their post-grunge peers, the Pennsylvanian quartet weren't especially inspired by punk, grunge, or indie rock -- they drew their inspiration from the earnest, anthemic U2, tempering it somewhat with R.E.M.'s post-Document venture into big-time, socially conscious arena rock. That gave them a more mainstream sensibility than, say, Tad, Screaming Trees, or any of the heavy lumberjack lookalikes lumbering out of the Northwest, particularly since they were fronted by the wiry, attractive Ed Kowalczyk, whose sincerity -- in both his lyrics and performance -- helped make Live one of the biggest bands in the post-grunge America of the mid-'90s. That time in the spotlight was relatively brief. Their second album, 1994's Throwing Copper, climbed its way to number one on the back of the singles "Selling the Drama," "I Alone," and especially the ballad "Lightning Crashes," but they over-reached on its 1997 follow-up, Secret Samadhi, a heavy, heavy bid for hard rock and rock-crit credibility that debuted at number one but winnowed away a large portion of their audience. They bounced back briefly with 1999's The Distance to Here, but after the turn of the millennium, they, like many of their alt-rock brethren, had difficulty either appealing to their old audience or finding a new one, and their next two records -- 2001's V and 2003's Birds of Pray -- made little impact. A year after Birds of Pray, and just in time for the tenth anniversary of Throwing Copper, the compilation Awake: The Best of Live hit the stores. Since ...
