Brooklyn's Afu-Ra first came to the attention of the hip-hop community via his appearance on Jeru the Damaja's 1994 album THE SUN RISES IN THE EAST. As his solo debut BODY OF THE LIFE FORCE makes clear, he's got a lot going on upstairs. Afu-Ra is a devotee of both martial arts and Rastafarianism, and he got his name from a tale in the Egyptian Book of the Dead. His lyrics strongly reflect his spiritual concerns, but he not afraid to tackle hardcore subjects from the streets either. Underneath it all, Afu-Ra backs up his versifying with unerringly infectious beats and grooves. While the album's intro mixes elements of mysticism, science fiction, and social consciousness, "Soul Assassination" achieves rhythmic transcendence by mixing highly syncopated beats with horn samples. And so it goes throughout this impressive debut, as spirituality converges with reality for a wide-screen view of hip-hop's future.

As stated before, this cd is not for the average. He teaches as he rips the mic. Not to mention he has some of the illest lyricist in the game at that time: GZA, Masta Killa, and Smif n Wessun. He even has Ky-Mani Marley (you should definitely cop Many More Roads, dude sounds just like his father). If you like lyrical skills then there is no mistake in grabbin this. Equality is the illest track for the record!

 Afu n his skillz
This album is ill. Too ill for some. It's an album for true hip hop heads, and you have to be able to appreciate emceeing and lyricism to feel it. If you like mainstream hot garbage then stick to it. Afu will probably hurt your feelings. But if you know a true MC when you hear one, if you like ill beats (Dj Premier) and tough rhymes, if your favorite emcees are Rakim, Jeru, Guru, Gza/Genius, and all the real rappers, then this album is a must for you.

Nothing but........
Hip Hop. Makes you bob your head to every track. No fakin' on this CD. You clowns my only buy mainstream, but this CD is better than that. You won't be disappointed.

Man...This cd is straight ill...Afu killt tha mic and left it in fragments...And to top it off tha man had some of tha nicest beats...Definately worth 5 stars...Everybody should jus cop it now...
