||Sir Robert Stephens Shines!|
Asphyx review This is one of the rare moments that captured Sir Robert Stephens (Prime of Miss Jean Brody, The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, Henry V) on film. An excellent Shakespearian, Stephens is lumped in with the likes of Jeremy Brett (PBS Sherlock Holmes) because he attended RADA and acted in the National with him. Actually the two became fast friends. It's not for nothing that Stephens grabs you and keeps you wondering; he's a marvelous actor. That's one reason why you should consider this DVD. Another is that this film was made with the feel of the old horror movies, like The Mummy and Tomb of Ligeia! It's got the colors, the scenery, the dress of a victorian romance novel, with the grotesque tale of a man obsessed with taking pictures of the dead, to see if he can capture the soul! Bungling and mayhem ensue, all the while Stephens as the professor desparately clings to his theories. Look for a cast that you will recognise (I haven't had time to look them up) and a freakish time had by all. Perfect for cuddling up with a loved one, or watching in the dark. It's a shame this film didn't get more airplay, since the Exorsistcame out at the same time, it got shoved to the wayside. I loved it.

I'd never heard about this movie until recently, and I bought it based on reviews. The topic is enticing, and although the resources at the time werent't that good, it didn't spoil the plot. Just the main theme I think did not match the story. Too romantic.
