Ghosts invade suburbia in this 1982 horror film from director Tobe Hooper (TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE) and producer Steven Spielberg. Life in the Freeling family's tract home is comfortably bland, but frisky poltergeists soon put a little excitement into their daily routine--moving furniture and communicating with their youngest daughter, Carol Anne, through the television set. Unfortunately, harmless pranks quickly turn nasty and the previously friendly ghosts kidnap Carol Anne, trapping her in the spirit world. To win the child back, the family calls in a team of parapsychologists and a psychic who conducts an elaborate exorcism. The apocalyptic finale is deliciously macabre, and pushed the limits of the PG rating. A number of sequels followed, and speculation still remains on whether Spielberg--who wrote the story and storyboarded the action--essentially ghost directed the film.

Filmed in Metrocolor and Panavision. Film was originally rated R by the MPAA, but received a PG on appeal. Academy Award Nominations: Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Effects Editing.

This vignette-laden, nostalgic view of Christmastime in 1940s Indiana follows nine-year-old Ralphie, who desperately wants a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas--and is waging an all-out campaign to convince his reluctant parents that the toy will be safe in his hands. By turns warped and winsome, the comedy follows Ralphie as he prepares for the big day with his rather idiosyncratic family. Based on the novel by humorist Jean Shepherd (who also narrates the film), A CHRISTMAS STORY gained popularity long after its theatrical run, through frequent holiday broadcasts ...

Like a lot of the best family entertainment, DINOSAURS was fun for both kids and their parents. Children couldn't get enough of the slapstick humor, while adults enjoyed the show's satire of contemporary society. This sitcom centered on the Sinclairs, a family of dinosaurs led by father Earl. Though he was surrounded by devoted wife Fran, sassy daughter Charlene, and rebellious teen Robbie, the real star of the show was Baby Sinclair. The talkative tyke would famously bash his father on the head while screaming, "Not the mama!" Jim Henson Productions brought the creatures to life, and they featured the vocal talents of sitcom stars like ...

Like many holiday films, THIS CHRISTMAS mines the ample humor and drama of a family Christmas. Ma'Dere (Loretta Devine) is the matriarch to the large and loving Whitfield family, which consists of her three daughters--Kelli (Sharon Leal), Lisa (Regina King), and Mel (Lauren London)--and her sons--Michael (Chris Brown), Claude (Columbus Short), and Quentin (Idris Elba). They are an extremely attractive and successful bunch, but no sooner have they shared their first meal together than the hidden tensions begin to boil to the surface. Long-kept secrets come tumbling out, and the Whitfields soon engender enough drama to support several spin-off soap operas. There's interracial marriage, infidelity, gambling debts, an AWOL soldier, and repressed dreams of musical stardom, to name just a few of the issues they are forced to tackle in between stuffing the turkey and decorating the tree. Will their many problems and misunderstandings be resolved by Christmas day? Since this is a family holiday flick, the odds are, of course, quite good. Despite the often heavy subject matter, the film has the glow and sheen of a lighthearted romantic comedy. The characters may be awash in drama, but they contend with their troubles in impeccable wardrobes and settings, so that even the barroom brawls have an almost cozy look to them. While some might feel the packed storyline was in more need of trimming than the tree, the tidy ending makes for perfect feel-good holiday fare. If only all family discord could end with a dance-off ...

Based on the autobiographical novels of children's author Laura Ingalls Wilder, the beloved 1970s television drama LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE chronicles the trials and tribulations of a loving family on the American frontier during the late 1800s. Centered around farmer Charles Ingalls (Michael Landon), his wife Caroline (Karen Grassle), and their three daughters Mary (Melissa Sue Anderson), Laura (Melissa Gilbert), and Carrie (twins Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush), the series also features a strong supporting cast of characters that make up the town of Walnut Grove, providing a warm and textured portrait of 19th-century frontier life. This collection includes every episode of the family drama's eighth season, which witnesses the departure of Melissa Sue Anderson. Best known for its life-affirming lessons and heartwarming adventures, "LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE" made its TV debut in 1974 ...

Antonius Block (Max Von Sydow), a knight, returns from a 10-year crusade with his squire, Jöns (Gunnar Björnstrand), to find his homeland ravaged by the plague. When the black-cloaked figure of Death (Bengt Ekerot) appears to claim them, Block, whose war experiences have left him cynical about the existence of God and the afterlife, challenges Death to a game of chess to stall for time and gain some insight into the meaning of life before passing on. The game is intermittently paused and resumed during the journey home while Block and Jöns meet several traveling companions, including a mute girl (Gunnel Lindblom) whom they save from a bandit, and a family of poor traveling players--Jof, a gentle visionary (Nils Poppe); his wife, Mia (Bibi Andersson); and their infant daughter. Block witnesses much suffering and anguish along the way (an encounter with a woman accused of witchcraft who is about to be burned at the stake is especially jarring) but also finds evidence of human kindness and love, prompting him to realize that even a single gesture of goodwill might make the long struggle of his existence worthwhile. The title of Ingmar Bergman's highly acclaimed allegorical film stems from the Book of Revelation. DVD. Feature film. Dir. ...
