1993 J'Appuie Sur La Gachette... album
$13.95 Released in 1995, the third album from one of the most influential hip-hop groups in France is literally dropping bombs on Paris, as the title says. Almost all the tracks are both aggressive and clever, even in the lyrics as they are embodied by the furious Joey Starr and the shrewd Kool Shen, and on the production level, taking French rap to a whole new level. Each track speaks to the brain and body, unveiling the everyday troubles and thoughts on city life, and triggering wrath and rage through the power of the two lyricists. Typical of the genre you might say, but a large spectrum of subjects is tackled here, with varying degrees of awareness: from the resurgence of nationalist ideas in France ("Plus Jamais Ça"), the blindness of the power structures about the youth, the problems to overcome as the Supreme NTM group evolves ("Tout N'est Pas si Facile") to the pleasure ...
| | E S G Boss Hogg Outlaws CD (2001)
1993 J'Appuie Sur La Gachette... CD music
$11.39 Following several solo albums for Wreckshop and Perrion during the mid- to late '90s, E.S.G. teamed up with Slim Thug for Boss Hogg Outlaws, the first release on S.E.S. Records. Along with producer SIN, the Houston duo began S.E.S. in 2002, hoping to capitalize on the suddenly lucrative Dirty South scene and, in particular, the burgeoning Houston scene. E.S.G. & Slim Thug operate much like Eightball & MJG, complementing one another. It also helps that they can trade off verses, helping the songs flow better from verse to verse; furthermore, the songs flow even better when they invite guests such as Lil' Keke, Daz Dillinger, and Bun B to drop a verse. A large step forward for E.S.G. and an impressive first step for Slim Thug, Boss Hogg Outlaws shows much promise for the duo's S.E.S. label. ~ Jason Birchmeier

| | Racketeers Mad For The Racket CD (2004)
1993 J'Appuie Sur La Gachette... CD music
$13.39 The notion of MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer and Damned founder Brian James forming a band is enough to warm the heart of most any aging rock & roll reprobate, but the good news is that their project, Mad for the Racket, actually has more going for it than a few interesting names. Of course, Kramer and James aren't the only recognizable folks on board; ex-Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan plays on all 12 tracks, while Stewart Copeland of the Police, Clem Burke from Blondie, and Brock Avery of Kramer's solo band all take turns handling percussion duties. The Racketeers, the ad hoc group's first album, finds all parties involved in strong form; Kramer and James trade off on lead vocals and guitar solos, and Brother Wayne's contributions are certainly up to the high standards of his excellent albums for Epitaph, especially the manic "Prisoner of Hope," the dark and politically charged "Czar of Poisonville," and his musical tribute to CNN reporter Christiane Amanpour. Brian James' offerings aren't quite so strong or confident, but given the peaks and valleys of his career, The Racketeers finds him in very fine form; his songs rock with a tough, bluesy undercurrent, his lyrics are both streetwise and sardonically witty (lots of guys might sing about getting their car stolen, but James follows that up with: "I gotta take the bus downtown/Aw, s**t!," and you can be assured it makes all the difference), while his voice seems to have acquired the British equivalent of a Southern drawl, and the twang fits him like a glove. McKagan ...
