| | Aretha Franklin Think & Other Hits CD Aretha Franklin Discography of CDs
Rhino Flashback's Think & Other Hits may only boast ten tracks from the Queen of Soul's considerable canon of works, but it's hard to argue over classics like "Think," "Call Me," and "(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone," as there are far worse options for the listener seeking a mid-level budget compilation. Fans looking to take a bigger bite out of the Aretha Franklin catalog would be better off with 2001's Aretha's Best or 2007's Definitive Soul Collection, while gospel lovers should pick up 1999's Amazing Grace: The Complete Recordings. ~ James Christopher Monger

| | Isaac Hayes Shaft (Deluxe Edition) CD (1971) Bonus Track; Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Think & Other Hits CD music
$9.75 Despite its codification into our collective pop culture consciousness, Isaac Hayes' "Theme From Shaft" is a highly original composition. It's been remade by Hayes himself for the remade Shaft film, and appropriately kicks off this collection of tunes from the movie by some of R&B's New Jacks.
A diverse selection of artists encompass the collection, from lascivious soul stirrer R. Kelly to the rugged Latin hip-hop of Fulanito, along with many other noteworthy diversions that represent the many flavors of contemporary urban soul. Most of the material focuses on John Shaft's street smarts and bravado, or the film's pimps, hoes, and gangsta imagery. As expected, Southern hip-hop is well represented, with Outkast, Mystikal, and Big Gipp from Goodie Mob contributing. The tracks offer typically gritty observations on street life, over bleak, minor chords and busy percussion. T.I.P. featuring Beanie Sigel offers "2 Glock 9's," one of the soundtrack's most rugged grooves, a minimal, stripped-down drum break that stutters and skids backwards and forwards over a Notorious ...

| | The Ultimate Bee Gees CDs (2009)
Think & Other Hits album
$15.49 Functioning as something of a replacement for the 2001 collection Their Greatest Hits: The Record, The Ultimate Bee Gees covers much of the same ground as that double-disc set, albeit in not quite so linear a fashion. The Record marched through its 40 tracks chronologically, opening with the stately baroque Beatlesque pop of the '60s and then winding through the '70s, whereas this opens with the bright, fabulous blast of "You Should Be Dancing" ...
| | Donny Hathaway Collection CD (1990)
Think & Other Hits CD music
$8.09 Unfortunately, Atlantic's A Donny Hathaway Collection, one of the few career retrospectives available (and basically the only one in print), isn't quite definitive; it presents a version of Hathaway's career inordinately focused on his commercially successful duets with Roberta Flack, and his slowest, ...

Think & Other Hits songs
$12.65 Few artists have made such an impact, with such energy, on their hip-hop scene debut as Canibus. Armed with a deadly vocabulary and heavyweight rapping skills, he's had battle-ready MC status since his emergence in the late 1990's.
Now with the release of 2000 B.C., his sophomore effort, Canibus is ready to claim the streets worldwide. Tracks such as "C-Que," which samples "Theme From SWAT," "I Bust 'Em You Punish 'Em," which features the legendary Rakim, and "100 Bars," display Canibus' passion, aggression and single-minded vocal style. Some other 2000 B.C. highlights are "Micnificent," "Die Slow" and the raw, raging title track. There's no sophomore slump here, ...
| | Down South Bounce Vol. 2 CD (2001)
Think & Other Hits album
$10.69 Less than a year after his first genre-defining volume of the Down South Bounce series, DJ Jelly returned with a second volume. For the most part, he sticks with the same no-frills approach that made the first volume such a success: He spins some of the most acknowledged Dirty South club anthems and plays it safe in terms of mixing the records, for better or worse. Some of the highlights here include Trick Daddy and Trina's "Nann Nigga," Three 6 Mafia's "Tear da Club Up '97," Eightball & MGJ's "Pimp in My Own Rhyme," Goodie Mob's "They Don't Dance No Mo'," and Master P and Mia X's "Bout It, Bout It." Considering just these songs, Down South Bounce, Vol. 2 certainly has no shortage of classics. Unfortunately, though these aforementioned songs are indeed some of the best Dirty South anthems from the late '90s, there are a few questionable inclusions on this mix; in particular, the latter half of the mix features a number of relatively underground tracks that aren't going to be familiar to most casual listeners and are admittedly not on par with the rest of the mix. Had Jelly kept dropping nothing but classics as he does on the first half of the mix, this volume could arguably have surpassed the first volume in terms of quality. But that isn't the case ...
| | Slum Village Trinity (Past, Present & Future) CD (2002)
Think & Other Hits CD music
$11.89 Detroit has more to offer to the hip-hop world than the obstreperous likes of Eminem, as proven by the consistently inventive output of the progressive, underground hip-hop trio Slum Village. In the past, the group's credibility leaned heavily on the production abilities of Jay Dee, one of the most celebrated beatmeisters to rise up from the Detroit underground and be embraced by mainstream artists on a national level. Consequently, Slum Village might be forgiven for a certain ...

| | Troubled Waters: Deep Soul From The Deep South CD (2003)
Think & Other Hits songs
$17.55 What sets Troubled Waters apart from the majority of deep soul collections is its expansion of the genre's template -- moving well beyond the Memphis and Muscle Shoals material that comprises most sets of this ilk, the disc also goes far beyond the earthy grit of your typical deep soul record to encompass material that, at times, recalls the modern soul made north ...
