| | Lou Reed Transformer CD Lou Reed Discography of CDs
After a tepid solo debut, Lou Reed's post-Velvet Underground standing looked dicey. Fortunately, David Bowie and his guitarist Mick Ronson stepped in to help Reed craft one of the best albums of his career. TRANSFORMER built on the stripped-down, quirky pop of LOADED-era VU, infusing it with the androgynous, cheeky glitz of the glam era (the bleached-out black-and-white cover photo of Reed in eye makeup is a giveaway), not to mention a fair bit of Ronson's guitar muscle. Much to everyone's credit, however, the album's stylish flair never eclipses Reed's excellent songcraft or acerbic wit. [paragraph here] TRANSFORMER's sense of chic fun is infectious, and is heightened by Reed's character sketches of Andy Warhol's entourage and the glitterati of New York. "New York Telephone Conversation" demonstrates his biting satire, as do "Hangin' Round," a Ronson-assisted rocker, and "Goodnight Ladies," a music hall send-up. But TRANSFORMER's highlights are some of Reed's best-ever songs: the soaring ditty "Satellite of Love," for instance, the cutting "Vicious," the romantic, yet chillingly melancholic "Perfect Day," and the slice of pop perfection that is "Walk On The Wild Side," complete with shuffling groove, sliding bass, instantly memorable vocal back-ups, and Reed's deadpan talk-singing. Ever the experimentalist, Reed would have difficulty matching the magic formula of this album again. As a result, TRANSFORMER remains one of the infallible standouts in his discography.

Transformer album
$12.25 The Black Heart Procession's beautifully bleak postmodern folk-rock falls in with the work of the Willard Grant Conspiracy, Tindersticks, Palace, Lambchop, etc. Like those groups, BHP use fragile, elegant music to frame poetic lyrics that express a deep sense of alienation and disillusionment. Like Lambchop, they use every instrument in the book to achieve their aim, from trumpet and synthesizer to sheet metal and toy ...
| | Barry Adamson Moss Side Story CD (1989)
Transformer CD music
$10.09 Barry Adamson's first full-length album, Moss Side Story is still unequivocally his best. Elements of rock, voices from news reports, blood-curdling wordless female vocals (courtesy of experimental/punk diva Diamanda Galás), lounge keyboards, and swirling funereal ambient music are interwoven on this taut and compelling, almost continuous imaginary "soundtrack." The result is a sinister and edgy soundscape that's as ...
| | Birthday Party Live, 1981-1982 CD (1999)
Transformer music CDs
$14.69 The Birthday Party's LIVE 1981-82 is a vicious and incendiary assault on the nature of traditional both rock music and its various offspring. Words like "intense" are consistently overused when describing rock bands, but the Birthday Party worked overtime to make sure that they fully deserved them.
Digitally remastered by Dave Macquarie (1999, Studios 301).
Recorded at three European concerts-- in London, in Bremen, and in Athens--this album displays a rock band caught in the act of simultaneous exorcism and self-destruction. Standouts include a high-speed swipe at "A Dead Song" that outstrips the studio version in nearly every respect; the tricked-out rockabilly of "Release the Bats," a song which probably did more for the then nascent Goth movement than anything since Bauhaus' "Bela Lugosi's Dead"; "Dead Joe," built on searing guitar feedback and accelerated drumming from Phil Calvert; and an eight-and-a-half minute cover of the Stooges "Funhouse," featuring each member of ...
| | Frank Sinatra Where Are You? CD (1957) Remastered
Transformer songs
$11.09 This is part of Capitol Records "Entertainer Of The Century" series.
This 1957 recording marks Sinatra's first collaboration with arranger Gordon Jenkins. Jenkins was an innovator whose sympathetic orchestrations for Sinatra, second only to those of Nelson Riddle, would mark a bright period in the singer's long, celestial career. Besides his phenomenal vocal abilities, one of the things that set Sinatra apart from his contemporaries was his conceptual vision. He was one of the first pop singers to release albums that were thematically connected groups of songs, rather than just a haphazard collection of singles (take that, SGT. PEPPER!). The material Sinatra chose for WHERE ARE YOU reflects a mood of wistful regret and romantic longing, a mood the Chairman could mine more effectively than anybody this side of Mark Eitzel.
The unadulterated ...
| | Jerry Lee Lewis Another Place Another Time/She Even Woke Me Up To Say Goodbye CD (2002)
Transformer album
$17.75 Raven's 2002 two-fer CD reissue of Jerry Lee Lewis' 1968 album Another Place Another Time and 1970's She Even Woke Me Up to Say Goodbye contains the added bonus of six tracks -- over half the album -- from 1969's She Still Comes Around (To Love What's Left of Me). By doing this, the disc transcends typical two-fer status (which, frankly, would have been enough, since these two albums are so tremendous, their first CD release is something to celebrate) and becomes the best single-disc collection of Jerry Lee's country material. There have been other discs that tackle the same recordings for Smash (all unfortunately out of print as of this writing), but their scope was a little broader, including many of his '70s hits for Mercury as well as Smash sides unheard here. On the surface, this may seem to be a drawback -- more is usually better, after all -- but the narrow focus of this two-fer highlights his peak as pure country singer, when he found his voice and ran with it. He made great music after She Even Woke Me Up to Say Goodbye, to be sure, and had plenty of hits, but these three albums are classics, bristling with excitement and infused with hardcore honky tonk pathos. It's ...

| | Brighter: A Duncan Sheik Collection CD (2007)
Transformer CD music
$8.89 In 2006, Rhino Records released the two-disc anthology BRIGHTER LATER, which contained a disc of hits by the adult alternative pop star Duncan Sheik, coupled with a second disc of Sheik's darker, moodier material. The following year, the label spun off the first disc, unaltered, as a stand-alone budget-line collection of the singer-songwriter's most popular songs. As a result, those who bought BRIGHTER LATER won't need BRIGHTER, but it's an ideal release for the casual fan with fond memories of 1990s radio hits like "Barely Breathing" and "She Runs Away." Sheik also covers a favorite song by one of his most obvious influences, Joni Mitchell's "Court and Spark."
