EPITAPH is a collection of previously-unreleased performances by the original King Crimson lineup. Disc 1 features four tracks recorded for BBC Radio, along with live performances taped at the Fillmore East, New York, New York on November 21, 1969 and the Fillmore West, San Francisco, California on December 14, 1969. Disc 2 is a live show taped at the Fillmore West on December 15, 1969--the original lineup's final performance.

Two additional discs of EPITAPH material, featuring concert recordings from August 9 and September 7, 1969, are available only by mail order from Discipline Records.

Includes liner notes by Greg Lake, Robert Fripp, Ian McDonald, Michael Giles and Peter Sinfield.

In prog-rock circles much has been made of the LARK'S TONGUES-era Crimson's live prowess. The heady sonic concoction that was the 1969 version of the band is often overlooked in this respect. The band's debut would lead you to peg them as a kind of avant garde Moody Blues, but EPITAPH reveals the band's other side.

In BBC sessions and three American gigs from the first year of the band's professional life, we can see a much jazzier, more improvisational side to the live KC. Stretched-out versions of tunes from the first two albums are interspersed with an unusual Donovan cover ("Get Thy Bearings," emphasizing the band's ever present softer side) and some previously unreleased instrumental pieces full of spontaneous invention. Fans will note that the bluesy, unrecorded "Drop In" shares a melody with ISLANDS' "The Letters." For fans of the band's early period this is essential. For aficionados of the later material, it will be illuminating.

King Crimson: Greg Lake, Robert Fripp, Ian McDonald, Michael Giles, Peter Sinfield.Rolling Stone (7/10-24/97, p.124) - 4.5 Stars (out of 5) - "...The inky abstract sketches...anticipate the avant-prog pomp of recent underground bands like Tortoise and Jessamine..."
Q (6/97, p.151) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - "...this double CD includes enough anecdotal material for the biggest obsessive."

The album's opening track, "Sweet Leaf," a salute to one of the band's favorite smokeable substances, contains one of metal's heaviest guitar riffs, courtesy of Tony Iommi. Another eternal band favorite is the grim, post-nuclear war tale "Children of the Grave." Vocalist Ozzy Osbourne is in fine voice on "After Forever" and "Lord of this World," while the more ...

While the title track is the album's best-known song, SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH proved to be another in a long line of 100% filler-free records from Ozzy and co. Highlights included the creepy "Who Are You?," plus the Tony Iommi riff-mongers "A National Acrobat," "Killing Yourself to Live," and "Sabra Cadabra," a song that Metallica ...

By the mid-'70s, a number of problems were threatening to break up the original line-up of Black Sabbath. The stress brought on by lengthy touring, drug use, and alcoholism had begun to dilute the band's original, influential heavy metal. Sabbath began to drift away from the straight-ahead power rock of such classic albums as PARANOID and SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH, as evidenced by its final two albums to feature singer Ozzy Osbourne, 1976's TECHNICAL ECSTASY and 1978's NEVER SAY DIE. However, TECHNICAL ECSTASY does contain some intriguing, overlooked ...

PARANOID proved to be Black Sabbath's most focused, consistent, and successful record. Leaving behind the amorphous, extended jams of their debut for focused songs and a more structured sound, Black Sabbath virtually wrote the book on heavy metal with the ominous, unforgettable riffs, thunderous rhythms, and dark themes on this release. There are some up-tempo rockers, the famous title track for one, but for the most part PARANOID oozes along like a bad dream, as on the slinky, creepy opener, "War Pigs," or ...

Epitaph album

By the end of the '70s, though Black Sabbath remained a top concert draw, its albums had become increasingly erratic and sub-par when compared to its earlier master works. Singer Ozzy Osbourne's growing disillusionment with the band had reached a boiling point, especially after it took so long to complete 1978's NEVER SAY DIE, the original line-up's final album. Though the album's title might suggest that the band had reconciled its differences (Osbourne had already left the band once ...

My daughters Sharon and Rebecca grew up singing with me in the car. It was just what we did, and no family trip was complete without interesting music to sing along to. Early on that meant Raffi and the like, but as their tastes became more sophisticated, John McCutcheon, Tom Chapin, Lou and Peter Berryman and Bill Staines joined us on those trips. When Rebecca was nine, I started playing the autoharp and began taking her with me to festivals and workshops. ...
People
Alan Applegate People CD  (2007)

Epitaph album
CD $12.65
The Making of "People"...From the beginning I wanted some cover tunes, because listeners can relate to a familiar melody right away. Searched for songs that were hugely popular in their time, but that hadn't been covered by a bunch of other artists. It's expensive and a lot of paperwork to include covers, but I knew that it would draw people's hearts in if the songs were rendered with the respect and creativity that they deserved.I had a formula in mind to include many kinds of material that would take the listener on a journey through different styles, cultures and musical eras: Laura- This standard was written for a movie of the same name. A song about obsessive love, it has a haunting quality to it that I thought would be essential to the feel of the album. Wanted music that would tug at the emotions of the listener, and never hesitated a second in choosing this song to represent the "standard" category. B.K. and I discussed the mood we wanted to capture, and he nailed it completely. It has energy in the rhythm, and chords bursting with mystery and heartfelt desire . It was the first song we did in the studio. Look up the lyrics sometime..."Laura's Back" is obviously the stretched-out ending, separated later into a reprise.Where Is The Love?-A very popular r&b tune in the seventies, and it had legs as an easy-listening number, but for some reason it wasn't covered by a lot of players. Wanted to hurry and get it done before someone sniffed out the project and stole my thunder. Wanted it to take on a funky beat, and create a conversation between the flute and the tenor, which represented Roberta and Donnie. Then at the end the two instruments trade back and forth, without stepping on each other. It's a cheerful, carefree sound, but ironically the lyrics are about an unfaithful mate who now betrays the new lover. Go figure.People Make The World Go Round-This was intended to be the title track. Then as the project developed the title shortened to just "People", especially since a prominent and talented sax player came out with his version of the song while mine languished in production. The lyrics of the tune cried out for a gritty urban treatment, which we augmented with an array of familiar city sounds and voices. The song ends with the accompaniment fading away, leaving the soprano sax player alone on the corner, playing amidst a cacophany of snarling traffic and construction noise.Betcha By Golly Wow-Another sure-fire pick right from the beginning, covered by a number of artists over the years. The Stylistics made it famous in a vocal combo form, and Norm Conners did a scorching ballad with it, but I wanted to energize it with a dynamic upbeat latin feel, and it surpassed my expectations. Simple piano trio accompaniment ...
