Corto Circuito
$14.65 An ambitious world fusion project, SIWAN brings together the Norwegian pianist Jon Balke, Moroccan singer Amina Alaoui, the Early Music ensemble Barokksolistene, minimalist trumpeter Jon Hassell, and others in a cross-cultural melange that imagines itself somewhere back in the medieval times of Andalusia, during the era when Spain was dominated by Muslim rule. With the expert help of Barokksolistene (Baroque solists), Balke has composed authentically evocative, Arabic-flavored settings for medieval Christian and Muslim poetic texts, fluently sung by Alaoui who sometimes resembles a serene flamenco singer or, better, a New Age descendant of the great Egyptian diva Oum Kalsoum. Hassell's horn is given ample solo space along with the Algerian violinist Eddine M'Kachiche; they both improvise against the ...
| | Masada Quintet Stolas: Book Of Angels Volume 12 CD (2009)
Corto Circuito
$13.09 STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, rhythmic invention, and, of course, tautly arranged spaces for individual improvisation--check out the album's longest cut, "Tagriel," for evidence as Zorn's composition not only travels genres but centuries. The popping showcase for solos that is ...
| | Bebo & Cigala Lagrimas Negras CD (2004)
Corto Circuito
$8.99 Lágrimas Negras (Black Tears) is a collaborative effort between the octogenarian Cuban piano master Bebo Valdés and the reigning Spanish flamenco cantador, Dieguito El Cigala. Recorded for Fernando Trueba and Nat Chediak's Calle 54 label, the sessions took place in Madrid between September and December 2002. Maestro Valdés (born in 1918), the father of the jazz pianist Chucho, has a long history as an innovator in Cuban music. He recorded the first Afro-Cuban jazz session in 1952, and was a tutor to the great bandleader Beny Moré, writing early charts for him. Valdés is also a world-class arranger. Dieguito El Cigala was born in 1960, and has become the undisputed king of Spain's flamenco singers. This recording features nine tracks that ...

| | Mariza Terra CD (2008) Bonus Track
Corto Circuito
$13.49 Terra feels like an attempt to move Mariza into the musical mainstream. She's already established herself at the forefront of fado, as one of the leading performers of the emotive Portuguese style, and there's no doubt she possesses a wonderful voice. But the addition of several guests, such as Chucho Valdés, Ivan Lins, and Tito Paris (among others) seems to open up the seams between fado and other genres, including Brazilian music and jazz. It does so relatively subtly, and she keeps her base pretty firmly in fado (witness the glorious "Ja Me Deixou"). But the inclusion of a standard like "Smile," which closes the album and has her singing in English, is evidence of the move to broaden her appeal, as is the lushness of the arrangements, much fuller than she's used in the studio in the past. Her ...

| | Go-Betweens Send Me A Lullaby CD (1981) (Import) Remastered; Enhanced CD; Japan
Corto Circuito
$16.65 Recorded between 1980 & 1982. Includes liner notes by Stewart Lee.
Digitally remastered Japanese version includes two previously unreleased tracks and rare live footage.
After a critically acclaimed trio of 7" singles--two self-produced and one on the influential Scottish Postcard label--Australia's the Go-Betweens recorded their first album, SEND ME A LULLABY, with new drummer Lindy Morrison augmenting the duo of Robert Forster and Grant McLennan. The songs on this album explore a jerking, spare style of folk music that is both oddly unsettling and demanding of attention at the same time.
The most obvious example of this effect is Forster's "Eight Pictures," a musically-sparse tale of an unattainable girl stalked by the photography-obsessed narrator that has two incongruous elements--a bizarre, massive-sounding drum solo and an extremely out-of-place lyrical joke. Other standouts include the clear, distant guitar structure of McLennan's "One Thing Can Hold Us," the pulsing, ...
