By the 1980s, the world had at least somewhat caught up with Kraftwerk's chilling musical vision. Synthesizers were everywhere, and the automation of music was developing with alarming speed. As pioneers of the genre, Kraftwerk was hitting its stride as the rest of the pop music world was taking its baby steps. 1981's COMPUTER WORLD serves as an ominous reflection of our evolving technological world, and it's a seminal influence on electronic music to come.
Kraftwerk's music had always been completely based in technology, all the while reflecting a healthy fear of global automation. This album met that fear head on, from the plaintive musical theme and lonesome Everyman protagonism of "Computer Love" to the chilling "Home Computer," which foretells the PC revolution via the group's trademark marriage of relentless, melodic electronic music and stark, touching human imagery. Other landmark compositions include the infectious, oft-sampled "Numbers" and "Pocket Calculator," a cut which stands out even on this album as a milestone in quirky, Teutonic synth-pop.

Ben and Tracey went clubbing last night and decided to go straight from the dance floor to the studio. They emerge with WALKING WOUNDED, an album that features Tracey's plaintive vocals backed by layers of electronic percussion. Tracey's soul-baring singing pulls you into the songs--we ride with her atop waves of drum beats and dreamy orchestrations in dance styles that vary from jungle to hip-hop to house. The combination brings about an interesting sensation: The beats move your feet while her wistful voice eases you into a state of relaxation. Melody and melancholy are wrapped together in these dance-sized pieces. So are crossover and hit: In Europe, a remix of the title song was the first true pop/jungle hit. (Simultaneously in the U.S., a remix of "Missing," a track from the band's previous album, AMPLIFIED HEART, stayed on the Billboard pop chart for more than a year, longer than any single in Billboard history.)

After ten years in Hollywood, where he made the acclaimed LETTER FROM AN UNKNOWN WOMAN, Max Ophüls returned to France. His first film, LA RONDE, is taken from Arthur Schnitzler's play REIGEN, which features a series of interlocking love stories set in Vienna at the turn of the 19th Century. Ophüls added the visual metaphor of the merry-go-round and a raconteur (Anton Walbrook), who comments on love as the characters move from one partner to another. A student seduces a chambermaid, then, filled with confidence, has an affair with a married woman who goes home to her husband, who then goes off to his mistress--and so on until the circle comes back to the beginning. The situations and dialogue were considered quite risqué at the time and the film was actually banned in America. Now, afternoon TV soap operas are more graphic, but not as witty or subtle in their approach to the vicissitudes of l'amour. Ophüls directs with a fluid grace and Simon Signoret, Danielle Darrieux, and Alfred Gelin give outstanding performances.

After two albums, England's premier post-punk revivalists Editors were at a crossroads. Their debut was a commanding snapshot of a young band whose emotional urgency outweighed its slavish devotion to the sounds of late-'70s/early-'80s Manchester -- there was no getting around singer Tom Smith's similarity to Ian Curtis -- but the power and passion of the songs trumped any "British Interpol" accusations. The follow-up found the band falling victim to the dread sophomore jinx, turning out a lackluster rehash of the same ideas as the debut. Ironically, it sold better than the first. Whether or not the band recognized they had come to a musical dead-end despite their booming sales, they were apparently wise enough to know it was time for a change in direction, and they decided to take a rather drastic left turn for their third outing.
