Love & Emotion: Atlantic Years
$24.59 HORSE OF A DIFFERENT COLOR is the 11-track release by rocker Willy DeVille, featuring "Gypsy Deck Of Hearts" and "Lay Me Down Easy."
Willy DeVille is the artist who seemingly steps forward while always looking back. While his career has been layered upon his phenomenal interpretive abilities as a singer (one of the few people Doc Pomus trusted to interpret his songs at the end of his life) and he has looked to material from mazurkas to sweaty R&B tunes, DeVille's often been falsely accused by American critics of posing. Horse of a Different Color follows in the footsteps of two records of New Orleans R&B-oriented material, but hearkens back to 1993's Backstreets of Desire to showcase DeVille at what he does best: music hall, ballads, and blues songs with a killer backing band, courtesy of producers Jim and Luther Dickinson (with appearances by Sid Selvidge, Spooner Oldham, Jimmy ...
| | Daniel Lanois Rockets CD (2005)
Love & Emotion: Atlantic Years
$11.79 Rockets is a collection of unreleased demos, live and rehearsal tracks, and leftovers. It was created as a "renegade CD" to be sold only at gigs and on Daniel Lanois' website. Lanois is a meticulous producer, so the rough and ready -- even raw -- nature of much of this is startling. That said, his leftovers are often more desirable than the choice material of other songwriters. The consistency of the material is the only guiding thread to what's here. And there are no credits; one has to go to the artist's website to get track-by-track information. The spectral, spare pedal steel instrumental "JJ Leaves LA" -- recorded live in Dublin with drummer Brian Blade -- is haunting and bittersweet. On the ragged, distorted whomp of "Sweet Soul Honey," tempos shift and slip, as Lanois is accompanied by Blade (and the sound from his guitar amp bleeds copiously into the drum mikes) and a big bass Indian drum ...
| | Chris Spedding Click Clack CD (2005)
Love & Emotion: Atlantic Years
$14.65 You certainly can't call Chris Spedding's 2005 release, Click Clack, a true blues album. While the respected session guitarist's roots certainly lay in blues-rock, the production is too pristine and the performances too perfect to be classified as blues. But if your forte is mature, mainstream rock with a slight bluesy edge (à la Eric Clapton's latter-day work), then Click Clack will be right up your alley. Even at his most upbeat, Spedding manages to keep everything extremely laid-back -- the tempos, the licks, even his Mark Knopfler-like vocals. The album's title comes from an old Captain Beefheart track, which Spedding covers here (and which turns out to be one of the album's highlights), while two other instrumental covers prove to be highlights -- the jazzy "Ramblin'" (by Ornette ...

| | Quireboys Well Oiled CD (2004)
Love & Emotion: Atlantic Years
$16.29 Here's an interesting question to ponder -- if Nirvana hadn't of crashed the scene, what path would rock have taken in the '90s? Well, it's quite possible that glam metal would have continued schlepping along. But it's also possible that the whole "retro rock" movement championed by the Black Crowes could have spread further, as such bands as the Quireboys were waiting in the wings. Often ...
| | Barbara Cook's Broadway! CD (2004)
Love & Emotion: Atlantic Years
$15.29 As of 2004, 76-year-old Barbara Cook was 30 years into her second career as a nightclub and concert performer. Her first career, as a musical comedy performer, had run for the preceding 26 years, dating back to her arrival in New York in 1948 at age 20. Barbara Cook's Broadway!, which ran during the spring of 2004 at the Vivian Beaumont Theater in Lincoln Center, was in some ways a musical autobiography for the performer, who described her career to the audience, touching upon many of the shows in which she had appeared and singing songs from them, notably "Till There Was You" from The Music Man (she was in the original production), "Mister Snow" from Carousel (she was in several revivals), "In Buddy's Eyes" from Follies (she was in a concert version), and four songs from She Loves Me (she was in the original production). But Cook did not restrict her song choices to shows she did on-stage. Rather, she surveyed the Broadway musicals of the 1940s, '50s, '60s, and '70s for songs that traced her journey, reflected on her maturity, or were just songs she liked and hadn't done before. Age was the subject of such selections as "It's Not Where You Start" (from Seesaw), "Among My Yesterdays" (from The Happy ...
