Legendary trance/ psychedelic/ funk album recorded in 1970 by Ravi Shankar's nephew. A mix of Western & Indian influences, the album is a highly sought after collectable. Featuresthe original cover art & all eight of the tracks that firstappeared on it. 1999 release.
Wielding a psychedelic axe of a different order, master sitarist Ananda Shankar (Ravi's nephew) offers up two groovy covers of rock classics, "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "Light My Fire." Actually, this classic of exotica, which originally appeared in 1970 on Reprise, isn't as cheesy as it might seem at first sight. All the originals are straightforward and melodic, solidly produced and seriously played, and in the case of "Snow Flower," an unsung instrumental pop classic. Shankar also gets to strut his stuff on the 13-minute plus "Sagar (The Ocean)," which turns into a syncopated East-West stomp after a leisurely "alap" intro.
Personnel: Ananda Shankar (sitar); Dick Rosmini, Drake Levin (guitars); Paul Lewinson (keyboards, Moog synthesizer); Jerry Scheff, Mark Tulin (bass guitar); Michael Botts, Joe Pollard (drums); Pranish Khan (tabla).

| | Crosby, Stills, and Nash Crosby, Stills & Nash CD (1969)
Ananda Shankar CD music
$9.79 It was big news in 1969 when former key members of the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and the Hollies--three of the finest bands of the '60s--splintered off to form their own trio. Despite their already-proven talents, few could have imagined the gossamer vocal blend that would become the trademark of supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash. The band's debut effectively provided the soundtrack to the summer of '69.
For his part, Steve Stills keeps exploring the progressive folk-rock sound that he'd pioneered with Buffalo Springfield; signature tune "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" is an expansive, multi-section affair that makes full use of the group's vocal skills. Fresh from the Hollies, Graham Nash adds an accessible pop sensibility, epitomized by the effervescent ditty "Marrakesh Express." David Crosby, always the wild card in the Byrds, here adds rough edges and flashes of mystery with his cutting protest rocker "Long Time Gone" and the exquisite art-folk of "Guinnevere." With this kind of firepower under its belt, it's no wonder CSN quickly became one of the biggest groups of their era.
One of the most enduring musical partnerships of our time, Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Crosby, Stills & Nash are revered for their peerless vocal harmonies, inspired songwriting and musical virtuosity. When the trio first sang together at a friend's Laurel Canyon house in 1968, their uncanny harmonic convergence was immediately apparent, and CSN took shape. Each member came to the new venture from other high-profile bands-Crosby from the Byrds, Stills from Buffalo Springfield, and Nash from the Hollies-and together, they formed that rarest of musical entities, a "supergroup" that lived ...
| | Joni Mitchell Clouds CD (1969)
Ananda Shankar music CDs
$6.05 All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology.
Mitchell's second album, like her first, focuses almost exclusively on her acoustic guitar and voice. Though the sound is similar to her debut recording, there's a lot of progression evident in the songwriting here. Mitchell comes across as the quintessential folk poet, highly literate, guardedly emotional, somewhat collegiate, but full of enough talent and idiosyncrasy to pull listeners into her web. "Both Sides Now," a beautiful low-key anthem of disillusionment from which the album's title is derived, became something of an anthem for the Woodstock set. Other, less well-known tunes like "That Song About the Midway" and ...

| | Ten Years After SSSSH CD (1969) Import; Remastered
Ananda Shankar album
$10.49 SSSSH is one of Ten Years After's best studio albums, although like its predecessor, "Stonedhenge" (albeit to a lesser degree), it's something of a period piece. It's not a straight blues album, by any means; "If You Should Love Me," for example, is an attractively watery re-write of the Beatles' "Hey Jude," while the opening "Bad Scene" is (unsurprisingly) a cautionary piece of acid rock, heavy on the fuzz guitar and sound efffects.
"The Stomp," however, is another one of leader Alvin Lee's thinly veiled tributes to John Lee Hooker (and a nice showcase for organist Chick Churchill). The album's centerpiece is a salacious version of Sonny Boy Williamson's "Good Morning Little School Girl" featuring ...

$42.05 | | These Ghoulish Things: Horror Hits For Halloween CD (2005)
Ananda Shankar music CDs
$14.55 The cleverly titled These Ghoulish Things unearths more than two dozen Halloween-themed efforts from the golden age of rock & roll, a concept with extremely limited appeal that's nevertheless executed with admirable aplomb. Assuming that the mere prospect of so many novelty tunes isn't enough to make your blood run cold, the disc is a primer in niche anthologies and reissues, assembling a staggering number of rare and little-known tracks that fit seamlessly within the disc's narrow conceptual scope -- who knew so many records of the late '50s paid tribute to scary monsters and super-creeps? Bobby "Boris" Pickett's tedious "Monster Mash" is the marquee cut here, but the good stuff comes from legends like Bo Diddley ("Bo Meets the Monster"), Screamin' Jay Hawkins ("Feast of the Mau Mau"), Bill Doggett ("Monster Party"), and the Hollywood Flames ("Frankenstein's Den"). Recommended for kids of all ages. ~ Jason Ankeny
At last, the definitive Halloween compilation! This is a truly satisfying compilation which bears all the familiar Ace hallmarks of a fine track selection, attention to detail and irresistible artwork rolled into one potent ...
