Engineers: Phil Tan, Brian Frye, David Hewitt. Principally recorded live at Remote Recording Studios, Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Japanese release of contemporary R&B performer Usher's 1999 album contains additional tracks. CD contains bonus tracks. Usher broke big in 1997 with his second record, My Way, and there was no looking back. After it rocketed up the charts, Usher capitalized on his good looks and sweet charms, attempting to break into movies and pushing his celebrity status. All of which meant, of course, that there was little time for him to concentrate on a sequel to My Way. Nevertheless, in pop music it's imperative to stay in the public eye, so Live was released a year and a half after My Way. Live albums often feel like a way to buy time while an artist figures out what to do, and there's no question that Usher's entry is part of that time-honored tradition, since there's no real reason for him to release a live album as his third record. And Live does feel like filler, since the only real evidence of his charismatic performances are the continual shrieks from the teenage audience. As a matter of fact, he sounds tired and weary on many tracks, even his signature tunes "You Make Me Wanna" and "My Way." Hardcore fans will find his Bobby Brown medley of interest, since it doesn't appear on either studio record, but the live performances here all fall flat. The remixes that are tacked on to the end are better, especially Jermaine Dupri's reworking of "My Way," but they don't necessarily improve an unnecessary album. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Of the many wonderful blaxpoitation soundtracks to emerge during the early '70s, Shaft certainly deserves mention as not only one of the most lasting but also one of the most successful. Isaac Hayes was undoubtedly one of the era's most accomplished soul artists, having helped elevate Stax to its esteemed status; therefore, his being chosen to score such a high-profile major-studio film shouldn't seem like a surprise. And with "Theme from Shaft," he delivered an anthem just as ambitious and revered as the film itself, a song that has only grown more treasured over the years, after having been an enormously popular hit at the time of its release. ...

Liner Note Author: Billy Vera. Don't let the title fool you; after listening to The Only Doo-Wop Collection You'll Ever Need, you'll definitely want more. This is a good starting point for the curious, since all the basics are here in the original hit versions: "The Great Pretender," "Earth Angel," "I Only Have Eyes for You," "Goodnight Sweetheart, Goodnight," and, thrown in for good measure, a few tracks that even vocal group scholars wouldn't mind hearing again ...

| | Donny Hathaway Collection CD (1990)
Live
$8.75 The reissue was produced by Bob Porter. Personnel: Donny Hathaway (piano, electric piano). Unfortunately, Atlantic's A Donny Hathaway Collection, one of the few career retrospectives available (and basically the only one in print), isn't quite definitive; it presents a version of Hathaway's career inordinately focused on his commercially successful duets with Roberta Flack, and his slowest, most dirge-like solo recordings. A few of his best up-tempo tracks are represented ("The Ghetto," his live cover of "What's Going On"), but not before haunted material like "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know," and "Giving Up." Admittedly, his duets with Flack are among the best recordings of his career, ranging from the depressed ("Where Is the Love") to the atmospheric ("The Closer I Get to You") to the downright driving ("Back Together Again"). But A Donny Hathaway Collection neglects far too much material from his two greatest ...

| | Adam Rader Speed Of Life CD (2008)
Live
$7.95 With lyrics that explore the facets of everyday life, Adam Rader brings a refreshing perspective to pop music. "Most of the time I can only write about the things that really dig at me. I think exploring things that are difficult helps us shape who we are," says the now L.A.-based Southern boy who cites Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, Dave Matthews and John Mayer as primary influences. " I write songs to express my interpretation of the world. Its cool when people can relate to that." Much to Adam's satisfaction, his music is being welcomed by an ever-expanding audience. He's seen it for himself while performing at intimate venues like Molly Mallones and Velvet Jones. " I have a place I go to in my mind when I'm performing. It could be what I was thinking about when I was writing or something currently going on in my life. I am always finding new meanings in what I write. One of the most beautiful things to me is knowing everyone else has a place they go to as well. They connect their own thought and experience to it. That has to be my favorite things about art. It means something different to everyone."Adam views his young music career as a way to live a life of purpose. That strong sense of direction was instilled in him by his mother. Her approach to me has always been, " If it makes you happy, DO IT. " The younger of two children, he was born and spent most of his childhood in Monroe, Louisiana. His highschool years were spent in Virginia Beach, Virginia. "The sense of community in the south is very strong. I think that is something that has stuck with me."Adam's earliest memories of music are ones of his father playing Zydeco records in the house as a kid. " Louisiana has a great pace of life. It was a cool experience growing up there and experiencing that culture. " Since nobody in his family was musically inclined, he had to discover things on his own. " I never really connected with any artists until I was 20. My friends were always turning me onto music they liked but it didn't resonate with me. I guess it took a certain amount of mileage before I could grasp the concepts of the songwriters I've grown to love. " At the age of 12 he traded a skateboard for a beat up electric guitar. Ironically, he didn't really start playing until several years later. " Its amazes me when I think back. I had that guitar for so long and never learned to play it. I heard some early Bob Dylan and suddenly felt like this is how I want to sound. " During Adam's third year of college at Cal State Long Beach he took an Intro to Theatre class as an elective. "My teacher required anyone who was late to get in front of the class and sing a song. I was running late for class one day and said $% it, I guess I'll bring my guitar and make it interesting. " His teacher pulled him aside after class to find out a little more about him. " She asked me what my major was and I told her Business. She laughed at me. In a brief conversation she urged me to reconsider the direction my life was heading. It was about a week later that I quit school and fully committed myself to being an artist. " " We are all writing the story of our lives, " Adam says. " I just want to be part of the soundtrack. ".
