The U.K. label Soundway Records has vaulted itself to the head of the pack within the narrow field of African anthologies. They specialize in hard '60s and '70s funk, disco, and rock from West Africa, as heard on their Nigeria Special series as well as the earlier AFRO BABY and GHANA SOUNDZ sets, not to mention a disc devoted to the best-of Nigerian singer-guitarist Sir Victor Uwaifo. This volume, a two-CD set of funk and rock from Ghana all recorded between the late '60s and early '80s, is a churning sea of polyrhythms, chanted vocals, thick, distorted organ sounds, blaring horns, and scorching guitar that are equal parts James Brown and No Wave. Don Braden's debut as a leader found the 27-year-old already a talented hard bop-based tenor saxophonist. Teamed up with other young all-stars (trumpeter Tom Harrell, pianist Benny Green, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer Carl Allen), Braden performs three originals, a trio of superior standards (including "Softly As in a Morning Sunrise" and "Will You Still Be Mine"), and an obscure Jackie McLean blues ("Condition Blue"), plus an acoustic version of Herbie Hancock's funky "Butterfly." The young tenor was on his way to shedding his influences and developing a strong voice of his own, and this largely straight-ahead date is excellent. ~ Scott Yanow

Cleveland hard-rockers The James Gang were soon to kiss their golden age goodbye when their third album (helpfully titled THIRDS) was released; it would be their final studio recording with singer/guitarist Joe Walsh. From the soul/gospel inflections of "White Man/Black Man" to the string arrangements of "Again," and the country rock of "Dreamin' in the Country," THIRDS was the band's most diverse outing to date, but the centerpiece was the rocker "Walk Away," which remains one of the band's best-known tunes. Walsh would soon walk away himself, replaced by Domenic Troiano, and later by Tommy Bolin, so THIRDS is the last waltz for the classic version of the James Gang, whose popularity would soon begin to decrease even as Walsh' own star continued to rise, on his own and then with the Eagles.
