KENT is the 1995 debut album by the Swedish pop outfit of the same name. All songs are sung in Swedish.
Kent's eponymous debut album sees the Swedish band yearning for an identity of their own and failing to find it. At times echoing either Radiohead, Pavement, the Cure, and maybe even A-ha, vocalist Joakim Berg and band mates struggle to find the right dynamic blend of emotion and aggression. There's a sense that Kent was just starting to master their instruments during the recording, but that the songwriting was still lagging somewhat behind. The two opening tracks encompass stuttering rock maneuvers, wobbly, crunching guitars, and overall sonic force. "Som Vatten" sounds like Pavement stripped of irony. The album gets into a same-y, amateurish stretch before a relatively powerful conclusion. As on Isola, a later album, Kent sees the band knowing which track to sequence last. "Frank" is built on a pretty, powerful melody, and it sets the tone for the band's more mature later albums. Before that final track, only "Den Osynlige Mannen" and "Pojken Med Halet i Handen" really amount to anything of interest, with the latter track recalling both New Order and the Cure in its keyboard melody. Kent isn't a particularly original album, and it's certainly not the band's finest hour, but it sets a blueprint for Kent's later moody masterpieces. ~ Tim DiGravina

brilliant album, yes not as good as there later stuff, but i think all bands improve with age!, kent are the best swedish language band i know , a must for all fans .

 Not in the same class as later music.
This CD is not in the same class as their later ones. It is a must for any hardcore fans (mainly to see how the band has developed), but it can easily be overlooked by others. If you like Kent's newer music, this CD may be of little interest to you. The lyrics are not as developed, and the music style is quite different.

Kent has improved!
Be aware! This debute from Sweden's best group isn't as good as you might expect if you have just heard 'Isola', 'Hagnesta Hill' or 'Vapen & Ammunition'. This one sounds more like noisy rock from a basement than the more soulful Kent that appeared later. Of course, people have different taste. I mean, there are actually people who enjoy noisy music. For them this CD may actually sound like creamy pop! By the way, if you have heard 'Verkligen' and enjoyed it, you may as well as enjoy this one...

This 10-track release by Swedish band Kent features the Swedish language tunes "Avtryck" and "Vi Kan Val Vanta Tills Im."
A year after the release of Kent, the band returned with a follow-up, Verkligen. The band toured during the year that passed, and judging by this record, it wasn't a very happy time. Here we get a bunch of melancholy songs, something the debut album lacked. The songs are often very good, but they are in general a bit too slow and quiet. But not all of the tracks are sleepy -- "10 Minuter (For Mig Sjalv)" and "Halka" are two great uptempo tracks, and "En Timme En Minut" starts off as another sad song, but after a while lifts ...

Kent's singles from four previous albums (Kent, Verkligen, Isola, Hagnesta Hill) have left behind a pile of B-sides that are, in Kent's own words, an experimental lab where they have always tried to create something new. And that is exactly what B-Sidor 95-00 is about. B-Sidor is surely a shock if you don't know what it is about. Joakim Berg's great lyrics, Kent's unbelievable dynamics, and the melancholic mood are not the first in line on this collection, vice versa, actually; this Swedish group has totally concentrated on musical tricks. And what does this album sound like? The only decent word for this album is "diversive." This is understandable because this album was made in five years at different studio sessions. The only song near Kent's traditional style is the excellent "Bas Riff," which, by the way, very much resembles ...

It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Like its closest cousin, Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-1985, Live Anthology almost overcompensates for the long wait by offering almost too much music, cherrypicking highlights from 1978 to 2007. In its simplest incarnation, Live Anthology is a super-affordable, four-disc box set running 48 tracks, which is eight cuts longer than Springsteen's box, plenty long enough for most fans, but in its deluxe version, available only through Best Buy, there's an additional CD, plus two previously unreleased DVDs -- a 1978 New Years Eve concert from Santa Monica, a documentary called 400 Days shot during the Wildflowers tour -- a Blu-Ray edition of all 62 tracks on the five-CD version, a vinyl copy of the 1976 Official Live 'Leg LP, plus a book and lithograph, along with other assorted bonuses. Certainly, the deluxe edition lives up to its billing, offering enough extras to justify its price tag, but the standard edition is plenty generous as it is, serving up enough consistently strong music from throughout the decades, ranging from expert covers of Willie Dixon and the Grateful Dead to deep treasures from the Heartbreakers catalog. It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's as much about texture as it is about song.something perfectly appropriate for a make-out album like this. Sometimes, Mayer dips too heavily toward the texture, but he can't resist a good, tight melody and builds the bulk of Battle Studies upon them: the elegant "Half of My Heart," the softly soulful "Perfectly Lonely." INXS seemed to be finished as an entity after the death of lead singer Michael Hutchence in 1997. Yet in a rather bizarre commercial move, the band signed on to a reality-TV show based on the idea of finding a new lead singer. They came away with J.D. Fortune, a Canadian who at one time made his living as an Elvis impersonator. Surprisingly enough, though, Fortune is a good fit for the band, with a pouty, sultry croon that recalls--not coincidentally--Hutchence.
The appropriately titled SWITCH finds INXS in full working order once again. Though a good many years past their late-'80s glory days, 2005's SWITCH certainly has the classic INXS sound, and their appealing mix of rock muscle, seductive swagger, and dancefloor grooves holds up quite well. The album's first single, "Pretty Vegas," is a driving rocker that recalls vintage hits like "Devil Inside," while moody ballads like "Afterglow" find the band in U2-like stadium-rock mode. After conquering a seemingly insurmountable obstacle, these Australian lads have put themselves back on the map with this solid effort.
