Take The Love
$5.85 Light Up the Night marked the end of an era for the Brothers Johnson -- it was the last of four albums that Quincy Jones produced for the Los Angeles siblings, and it was the last time a Brothers Johnson album was truly excellent instead of merely decent. When Jones was producing the Brothers Johnson's albums from 1976-1980, he gave them something their subsequent albums lacked -- consistency. Even though George and Lewis Johnson recorded some decent material after Light Up the Night, none of their post-Jones albums had the type of consistency that Jones gives this 1980 release. The album gets off to an impressive start with the major hit "Stomp!" (a definitive example of the smooth, sleek brand of funk that was termed sophisticated funk in the late '70s and early '80s), and the tracks that follow are equally memorable. From the sleek sophisti-funk of "You Make Me Wanna Wiggle," "This Had to Be" (which was co-written by Michael Jackson and employs him as a background vocalist), and the title song to the tender R&B/pop ballads "Treasure" and "All About the Heaven," Light Up the Night is without a dull moment. ~ Alex Henderson

Take The Love
$19.49 Critics of Euro-dance music tend to dismiss its artists as faceless, but Denis and Denyse LePage -- collectively the Canadian Hi-NRG duo Lime -- are hardly faceless and certainly deserve credit for being recognizable. While Denis LePage brings a gruff, rock-like vocal style to Lime's Euro-dance grooves, Denyse LePage tends to sing in a high voice and sounds more R&B-influenced. Put them together and you have an appealing combination. Lime never became pop/Top 40 superstars in the U.S., but in dance clubs that played a lot of Hi-NRG, the male/female duo commanded much respect in the 1980s. One of the Lime LPs that club DJs were quick to notice was Unexpected Lovers, which came out on the Matra label in Canada but was released by TSR in the U.S. The haunting title song was a huge club hit, and while the rest of the album falls short of the title song's excellence, it's generally enjoyable -- those who appreciate Euro-dance grooves will easily ...

| | Digital Underground This Is An EP Release CD (1991)
Take The Love
$10.15 Released in the same era of expansive and humorous hip-hop debuts by De La Soul, Digable Planets, Gang Starr, and A Tribe Called Quest, Digital Underground's similarly disposed first album and follow-up EP offered a party-friendly alternative to gangsta rap with a heavy dose of P-funk, jazz, and Prince's electro-funk aesthetic. The Oakland-based crew, featuring Shock-G as alter-ego and frontman Humpty Hump, would continue to ride high with Sons of the P, but never really captured the inspired mix of their first forays into the hip-hop arena. That said, curious fans should first check out the group's maiden Sex Packets release before diving into this six-song collection; while solid in its own right, the EP does contain two non-essential remixes of tracks off of Sex Packets. And even though new cuts like the extended funk jam "Same Song" (featuring a nasty Bernie Worrell-meets-Jimmy Smith ...
| | Funk Classics:80's CD (1995)
Take The Love
$5.89 Replaces Rbo520365;Rick James, Brothers Johnson,Bar-Kays,E.U.
By the early '80s, R&B acts had to embrace more polished productions and synth-based grooves or face extinction. Without looking too hard for rare gems, Funk Classics: The 80's offers 12 of the better-known tracks from 1980-1988. What's here is really no big surprise: Rick James' "Super Freak," George Clinton's "Atomic Dog," and the Gap Band's "You Dropped a Bomb" all make an appearance. Their strength as a good flow makes up for their ubiquitous presence on sets of this nature. The Bar-Kays' "Freakshow on the Dancefloor," Skyy's "Call Me," and the always-fun "So Fine" from Howard Johnson work even better due to their lower profile. As the '80s were not a monolithic decade for R&B style-wise, neither is this set. The graceful post-disco of the Brothers Johnson's "Stomp!" just doesn't mesh with late-'80s tracks like E.U.'s "Da Butt" and Salt-n-Pepa's ...
| | James Brown Godfather: Very Best Of CD (2002) (Import) Argentina
Take The Love
$11.99 This collection of music by soul and funk originator James Brown features 20 remastered classics, including "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," "I Got You (I Feel Good)," "Funky Drummer," "Living in America."
There are so many James Brown compilations out there that it can be tough to pick which one is the most suitable for a particular listener's budget or pleasure. This set from Polydor in the U.K. is -- for a single disc -- quite solid if bare in places. Containing 20 tracks and presented for a very attractive price point, it contains all major hits -- albeit edited single versions of some of them like "Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine." Of course, there is plenty missing, but it would be easy to come up with what is -- tracks like "Mother Popcorn," "Hot Pants," and "Ain't It Funky Now" are all very conspicuously absent. But it's difficult to argue with what is here, even of the later 1970s material. There is no single compilation of James Brown's music that can really be considered complete, but this one, containing all original recording sources and stellar material, stands with the best of them despite lacking some cuts. ~ Thom Jurek
James Brown was and will always remain The Godfather. His influence on Funk and Soul music is undeniable and will be felt for decades and generations to come. This 20 track compilation is the perfect reminder of the impact he had on music but also serves as a great introduction for the uninitiated. The sweat that drips from the speakers ...
