Centenary Collection: The Best Of The Hollies CD music
$13.59 Digitally remastered by Kevin Reeves (Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California).
The selection and sequencing strategy adopted by compiler Ron Furmanek for The Ultimate Peter & Gordon is easy to see. Allowed to pick 20 tracks, he has chosen all 14 songs by the '60s British duo that reached Billboard magazine's Hot 100 chart, from major hits like "A World Without Love," "Lady Godiva," and "I Go to Pieces" to minor ones like "To Show I Love You" and "The Jokers." The remaining six selections are either non-charting A-side singles ("You've Had Better Times"), B-sides ("Love Me, Baby," "The Town I Live In"), or album tracks ("I Still Love You," "Broken Promises," "My First Day Alone"). The selections have been sequenced in chronological order by recording date, not release date, so that, for example, "Don't Pity Me," which was released as a single in November 1965, precedes "To Know You Is to Love You," which was released as a single in July 1965 because "Don't Pity Me" was actually recorded 19 days before "To Know You Is to Love You." The sequencing gives a good sense of the ...

| | Essential Barbra Streisand CDs (2002) Limited Edition; Remastered
Centenary Collection: The Best Of The Hollies songs
$15.95 Although Barbra Streisand has recorded for the same company, Columbia Records, throughout her career, her work has not been particularly well represented on compilations. Four single-disc best-ofs dot her discography, but the listener who wanted to do something as simple as purchase an album containing the original studio recordings of both her first Top Ten hit, "People," and her first number one, "The Way We Were," without plumping for the four-CD box set Just for the Record , was out of luck. Complicating the compiling of her career highlights is her position as essentially an album artist, despite having scattered 11 Top Ten pop hits across 32 years. The ideal collection would have to do justice to her popular early albums of the '60s, her mid-career singles hits of the '70s, and her renewed album success in the '80s and '90s. Here it is. At a CD-busting length of over two and a half hours, this 40-track double-disc set encapsulates Streisand's recording career in chronological order from her 1963 debut album to 1999. (Two previously unreleased tracks sound like outtakes from her later album projects. "Someday My Prince Will Come" probably got left off of A Love Like Ours, while the gospel-tinged ...
| | Bobby Darin Hit Singles Collection CD (2002)
Centenary Collection: The Best Of The Hollies album
$7.85 Recorded between 1958 & 1966. Includes liner notes by Bill Dahl.
While Bobby Darin was an unpredictable sort who ventured from 1950s rock & roll to swing to country and folk-rock over the course of his career, THE HIT SINGLES COLLECTION does as good a job of touching all the Darin bases as any single-disc anthology possibly could. Darin's '50s pop ...
| | Kinks Ultimate Collection CDs (2002)
Centenary Collection: The Best Of The Hollies CD music
$16.45 Although generally not as highly regarded by the critics as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, or the Who, the Kinks may well have influenced far more musicians. The three-chord sledgehammer proto-metal burst of teenage lust called "You Really Got Me," the Kinks' third single and first hit, touched off a garage band explosion, which in turn influenced the rise of punk a decade later. Blessed with an astute songwriter in Ray Davies, the Kinks followed the template of "You Really Got Me" for a couple years, racking up hits with "All Day and All of the Night," "Tired of Waiting for You," and "Till the End of the Day." But Davies had more than one card in his pocket, and he blossomed into a sharp social satirist ("Dedicated Follower of Fashion"). By the time the album The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society was released in 1968, Davies had become a master of elegiac studies in English suburbia. The gender-bending "Lola" was a big hit in 1970 and the ...
