The Guess Who always seemed a bit like the Canadian predecessor/counterpart to Grand Funk Railroad, but they typically fared far better with the critics because of the versatility that they possessed. That trait is very evident on this collection of hits and great songs. From the opening "These Eyes," with its orchestral strings and Zombies-like baroque pop feel to the classic AOR crunge of "American Woman," the Guess Who played a wide variety of music. It is sometimes hard to believe that the same group that brought the world the jazzy "Undun" and the CS&N-ish hippie anthem "Share the Land" is also responsible for the rocking "No Time." While the name Israel Kamakawiwo'ole falls trippingly off few tongues, the Hawaiian singer better known as "Iz" was one of the biggest stars in his home state. Iz first came to public attention as a member of the popular Hawaiian group known as the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau. His subsequent solo career brought even greater fame, and countless fans were saddened at his untimely death in 1997. Those who mourn his passing will be gladdened by the posthumous release of ALONE IN IZ WORLD, compiled from various recording session outtakes.

On SKYSCRAPER, Roth stresses songwriting over instrumental virtuosity this time around-with often-grand results. The epic, sonically rich title track was comparable to little else at the time (or, for that matter, anything else since), while the single "Just Like Paradise" was the top-ten hit that pushed SKYSCRAPER to platinum status. Other highlights include the new wave dance sounds of "Stand Up," the gorgeous pop rocker "Hina" (which deserved to be a single), the nostalgic acoustic ballad "Damn Good," and the rockers "Knucklebones," "The Bottom Line," and "Hot Dog and a Shake." This is the first released version of Andrew Lloyd Weber's EVITA. It was recorded as a concept album before the first stage production of the musical, and differs slightly from the Original Cast Recordings which followed.

The original 1976 studio recording of Andrew Lloyd Webber's EVITA is still considered by many fans to be the best. The album was recorded before the musical was adapted to the stage, and as a result it contains songs and lyrics that were later changed or edited out of the score. Even more interesting is the sound here, which blends Broadway theatrics with rock music (much like Lloyd Webber's other famous collaboration with lyricist Tim Rice, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR), a sound that was also modified in later versions. Excellent performances, especially from Julie Covington as Eva Peron, distinguish this excellent recording, making it a must for fans of the musical and Lloyd Webber's work in general.
