| | Gregory Isaacs Night Nurse CD (1982) Remastered
Paris, France CD music
$10.45 A classic release from one of Jamaica's greats, NIGHT NURSE shows the Cool Ruler at his best--performing melodic, chilled reggae such as the title track and "Hot Stepper." The title track was a hit for Simply Red when they covered it in 1997. Although at his most prolific in the mid '80s, when he was beset by financial problems, Isaacs managed to maintain the quality of his material as this album proves. The Roots Radics provide excellent backing for Isaacs' smooth vocals. Perhaps a bit too mellow for fans of more militant reggae such as that purveyed by the Revolutionaries, time has nevertheless proved this to be a classic reggae album--the epitome of the feel-good Jamaican sound.
Although his 1981 album, More Gregory, was picked up for international distribution, Gregory Isaacs' 1982 release, Night Nurse, was his first to be designed for an audience outside Jamaica. Accordingly, Island Records head Chris Blackwell upgraded the overall sound quality, making this Isaacs' ...
| | Music Of Indonesia 18: Sulawesi: Festivals, Funerals & Work CD (1999)
Paris, France music CDs
$13.89 Smithsonian Folkways' Music of Indonesia Vol. 18 - Sulawesi: Festivals, Funerals, Work shows some careful selection on the part of the Music of Indonesia series editors. Another collection (Volume 15 of the Music of Indonesia series) had already been issued on the music of South Sulawesi, yet many more musical styles were left to be explored.
This volume of the series was supposed to represent each of the four major regions of Sulawesi, but the recording team ran out of time and was unable to make any recordings of Southeast Sulawesi. The focus then is on Central, North, and South Sulawesi. Because of the overwhelming influence of pop and missionary music styles on regional music in this area, Folkways decided to limit this volume to more the traditional music of indigenous festivals, funerals, and work. There is still quite a lot of interesting material here, regardless.
The first two tracks feature a Pakarena ensemble playing the final two segments of a dance that would typically be featured at a wedding or other celebration. The music is an ecstatic drum ensemble which displays increasingly passionate playing. While the drummers are playing, the dancers are supposed to remain almost motionless and serene, symbolizing either the women who ignore the attention-grabbing of men, or the pious who keep their focus among the distractions of the world. Also featured are funeral songs from an ascetic sect called the Kajang, featuring a beautiful blending of flute and voice. Equally interesting, but of an entirely different character is another type of dance, the Raego, which is featured on track 6 of this CD. The Raego that was supposed to have been included on the CD was one appropriate for a celebration, however, a mother and child had just died nearby and in the interest of appeasing their spirits, a funeral version was chosen instead. Because it is a dance featuring mixed groups of men and women, Raego had been the target of missionaries who claimed it was immoral; the colonial government had tried to limit its performance because they declared it a decadent waste of time. By the mid-'90s, however, more sinister outside cultural influences had displaced the concern about village dances, so it was no longer opposed. This song is quite beautiful and mournful, and features the rhythmic round-singing of the male and female dancers. The collection is closed with "Ma'owei Kamberu," a harvest song which was performed by an award-winning Indonesian folk group, Maengket Pisok Lengkoan, which has been performing for over 40 years and draws its members from a variety of ethnic groups in North Sulawesi. It provide

| | Amadan Hell-Bent 4 Victory! CD (2004)
Paris, France album
$12.69 Amadán is an Irish-Gaelic colloquialism for fool or idiot, and a Pacific Northwestern colloquialism for the Irish punkrock institution that attacks the senses from all six sides and routinely orchestrates chaos out of throngs of expectant fans.Victory. Weird word. Victory has the tendency to conjure up images of streets lined with throngs of grateful, flag-waving civilians or smoldering hills occupied by clusters of ragged, battle-weary soldiers. This is, however, not the term's only derivation. Slightly contrived, victory implies a completed step in a process, success in an endeavor, or mastery of a piece of a puzzle. Victory, interpreted this way, indicates a new beginning, a tying-up of loose ends, and the start of the next challenge. Victory is not just surviving a Monday's work, but leaving for the day having done it well. Victory is that feeling after your third punk rock show ever-emerging shirtless and sweaty onto the street at two in the morning-with a lifetime of shows to come. Victory is punching the starter with greasy, busted knuckles and finally hearing the bike roar to life. Victory is getting your degree and anticipating the next step. Victory is moving away from home. Victory is turning a page in your life and taking a chance on anything to escape oppression of any kind. Victory is ...

Paris, France CD music
$10.15 If you enjoy the melancholy acoustic-based songs of Vesan, you probably won't dig this album. Loud, abrasive, in your face, Disposable is spilling over with just a little teenage angst. If you have the patience to sit through and listen, there are a few nice things to say about the songs here - some special moments here and there sure to bring a smile. Purging the lobes, yes, that was the point of recording Disposable. And I felt much better having done so."Each Vesan release has its own unique character. Basically, Vesan serves as an outlet for music written mostly between 1995-2001 (from ages 15-21). 'Brooding' is probably the word that ...
