Recorded live in Juan-Les-Pins, France in July 1966. Originally released on Verve (8701). Includes original liner notes by Norman Granz and reissue liner notes by Phil Bailey.
This is a spirited live set taken from the same 1966 French concerts that produced ELLA & DUKE AT THE COTE D'AZUR (itself recently reissued as a 4-disc deluxe set). By including up-to-the-minute versions of such Ellington warhorses as "Sophisticated Lady," "Caravan," and, of course, "Take The "A" Train," this newly remastered edition of SOUL CALL expands the original album from a skimpy six tracks to a leisurely fourteen.
The opening "La Plus Belle Africane," a nearly 14-minute composition in the modern one-world spirit of the following year's FAR EAST SUITE, remains SOUL CALL's piece de resistance. Such featured Ellington players as tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves and underrated drummer Sam Woodyard are given plenty of featured solo space on "West Indian Pancake" and "Skin Deep." The latter was a specialty showcase for former drummer Louis Bellson, but the unassuming Woodyard shines throughout.
Limited Edition Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve. 2006.
Digitally remastered by Chris Herles (PolyGram Studios).
This is part of Verve's Master Edition series.

Soul Call music CDs
$12.89 Henry Threadgill has, in the framework of abstract music, been a stalwart, spontaneous composer whose personal sound is near impossible to identify, or certainly codify. A listener who enjoys very challenged music would have difficulty in discerning what is made up or written out. The elusive nature of Threadgill's kind of progressive jazz has to confound even those most oriented to his quirky pieces. Where the quintet Zooid lands in this quirky quandary of pegging a signature sound is subject to guesswork, but it definitely has its own brand of concentrated cohesion. Between Threadgill's scattershot flute and alto sax, the sleek tuba or trombone work of Jose Davila, and Liberty Ellman's thorny electric guitar, ...

Soul Call CD music
$14.99 A sequel of sorts to Chris Botti's 2006 PBS special, LIVE WITH ORCHESTRA & SPECIAL GUESTS, the September 2008 event LIVE IN BOSTON found the sartorially splendid cool jazz trumpeter accompanied by the Boston Symphony and a collection of celebrity vocalists. Also available as a DVD, the concert delivers an overview of popular music, with jazz standards like "I've Got You Under My Skin" right alongside "Ave Maria" and Sting's "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You." Whether featuring rocker Steven Tyler, AMERICAN IDOL chanteuse Katharine McPhee, or pop-opera superstar Josh Groban, all the tunes are presented in Botti's inimitable, Chet Baker-influenced uber-smooth style.

| | Brent Jensen Sound Of A Dry Martini CD (2002)
Soul Call album
$12.89 Educator, clinician, and A-one alto sax player, Brent Jensen honors one of the most self-effacing musicians in the history of jazz, Paul Desmond. The title comes from Desmond's ambition to "sound like a dry martini," probably very light on the vermouth. There are many "Desmond-isms" that he liked to use to describe his work. On the secret to his unique tone, he said "I honestly don't know! It has something to do with the fact that I play illegally." Desmond admired Charlie Parker's playing, as well as the new paths he blazed. But he was determined to do his own thing. The result was a style and tone that were light, fluid, subtlety swinging, and expressive. This sense of artistry is captured by Jensen as he plays a set of tunes that Desmond either played as a member of the Dave Brubeck Quartet, such as "Tangerine" and "Alice in Wonderland," or played in other settings, such as "Out of Nowhere." A couple of Desmond originals are on the program, including "Take Five," which has become a jazz staple. Playing Jim Hall to Jensen's Desmond is guitarist Jamie Findlay, recalling those classic albums they made together between 1959 and 1965. Recordings that Desmond made in Toronto with Ed Bickert during the 1974-1975 time period will also be remembered ...

Soul Call songs
$12.89 A fair outing of modern big band music from a set of players spread across the East Coast, this album captures some level of the classic bop big band sound (it opens with a Tadd Dameron number, no less), as well as hints of the modern big band, as they stand. The music here tends to be somewhat overwrought, with enough references to the old style that the music can become slightly monotonous after a time. The Tadd Dameron opener is an excellent composition, but loses a bit of its luster under the mass of instrumentation. As the album progresses, this lightens up a bit. Indeed, the big band is scaled back to a sextet for a spattering of tracks within the course of the album. These sextet pieces are really excellent, giving the players more room (and more bars) to stretch out and show off their abilities. In the larger setting, the songs become somewhat predictable under the weight of their own compositions and the difficulties inherent in keeping a band of this size together suitably well. The experimentation and exploration of some of the newer big bands (Chris Walden's, for example) is seemingly missing. That said however, the group takes a turn midway through, expanding into more adventurous territory at least temporarily with a Monk-like composition and a light samba leading into ...
