This sampler from the Creative World catalog consists of 12 performances by Stan Kenton's Orchestra, mostly from 1945-46. There are four June Christy vocals (including "Just A-Sittin' And A-Rockin"'), a pair of features for guest tenor Vido Musso ("Come Back o Sorrento" and "Santa Lucia") and six other pieces (all Kenton and Pete Rugolo arrangements) of which the highlights include "Safranski," "Artisrtry in Bolero" and "Opus in Pastels." It's a fine sampling of Stan Kenton's mid-'40s orchestra. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel: Stan Kenton (piano).
Recording information: 1961.

Artistry In Rhythm album
$14.38 Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink Ray Davies. His very presence as arranger and lead vocal means The Kinks Choral Collection isn't nearly as stuffy and middlebrow as so many of these orchestral rock albums; he manages to inject some semblance of rock & roll by pushing the songs forward with guitar, and letting the rhythms swing instead of plod. This looseness is the first big surprise of the album. The second is its unrepentant but quite possibly accidental silliness, ...

| | Dave Brubeck Time Out CD (1959) Remastered
Artistry In Rhythm songs
$6.55 Dave Brubeck's TIME OUT ranks alongside Miles Davis' KIND OF BLUE as one of the few advanced jazz masterpieces to achieve great commercial success. In fact, the widespread popularity of TIME OUT, with its cool-toned ambience, smooth style, and elements borrowed from classical music, helped make modern jazz a mainstream phenomenon.
The ubiquitous "Take Five" may be overplayed, but ...
| | Very Best Of Bert Kaempfert CD (1995)
Artistry In Rhythm album
$13.69 Recorded between 1960 and 1967. Includes liner notes by Steve Kolanjian.
Digitally remastered by Eliot Goshman (1995, Taragon Studios, Deer Park, New York).
Beginning with Louis Armstrong, through Harry James and Bobby Hackett of the Jackie Gleason Orchestra, the trumpet was once a king in pop music. This was true even in '60s-era easy listening, as demonstrated by the success of Al Hirt, Herb Alpert, and the ultra-shrewd German musician Bert Kaempfert, who probably was as responsible as anyone else in rehabilitating Germany's post-war world image. The Taragon label is re-releasing all of Kaempfert's many albums in an ambitious reissue project. This excellent compilation is the one to have however.
As well as being a successful composer ("Strangers in the Night," "Spanish Eyes," "Danke Schon," "L.O.V.E" are all his compositions), Kaempfert ...

| | Duke Ellington Piano Duets: Great Times! CD (1984)
Artistry In Rhythm music CDs
$9.69 These unique performances were recorded in 1950 and were originally released as 10-inch LPs. They were combined in their present form in 1964 on Riverside (475). Includes liner notes by Jack Maher.
Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
According to the liner notes, Leonard Feather got the idea for this recording from an elegant piece of party schtick in which Ellington and Strayhorn would play four-handed on a single piano. As recorded here, that piece, "Tonk," and seven others are not strictly duets, in that the pair of composers (presumably playing two separate pianos in the studio) are joined by a bassist. Still, one can see why Feather was charmed into preserving the idea on tape. "Tonk" is, in fact, an exquisite miniature, by turns ...

| | Gerald Veasley Velvet CD (2003)
Artistry In Rhythm CD music
$14.59 This is hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio players.
On Velvet, bass player extraordinaire Gerald Veasley is as smooth as the title of his sixth solo effort for the Heads Up label implies. After one listen, his audience will know that the soul he plays is legendary. Veasley blends a richly textured mix of urban funk, the Philly sound, and his unique bass perspectives to give listeners his rendition of the sounds and sensibilities of the neo-soul movement. Eleven new compositions either written or co-written by Gerald Veasley, "Home," and the outstanding cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Let's Do It Again" make a resounding statement about the rich tradition of soul, rhythm & blues, gospel, and funk that continues to endear generation after generation of music lovers to their very essence. Songs such as "Coup de Ville," "Velvet," "Summer Kiss," and "It's Alright (Tonight's the Night)" conjure up the perfect snapshot of Veasley's musical mindset, which was obviously inspired by real-life visuals. Even though Gerald Veasley is still in tune with the fan appreciation garnered by his previous releases, he has noticeably stepped away from the bass riffs and voicing used ...
