Purchase Emilie Jolie CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Joao Gilberto Amoroso/Brasil CD (1993)
Emilie Jolie album
$11.99 Joao Gilberto is perhaps forever destined to be lesser known to casual jazz fans than his occasional collaborator Stan Getz (whose GETZ/GILBERTO albums introduced the United States to bossa nova) and his ex-wife Astrud Gilberto (whose shy, delicate voice made her one of the most distinctive and beloved jazz vocalists of the '60s). However, true fans of Brazilian music recognize that Gilberto is second only to Antonio Carlos Jobim as a writer and interpreter of traditional Brazilian music and Brazilian-influenced jazz.
These two albums, collected in full on one CD, are among Gilberto's best solo albums. Alternating between standards like "'S Wonderful" or "Besame Mucho" and Brazilian tunes like Jobim's "Wave" and the original "Triste," AMOROSO is a fine, romantic jazz album. BRASIL, as the title suggests, consists of six traditional-style sambas, sung in Portuguese to acoustic guitars and hypnotic percussion. Both are essential to Gilberto fans and neophytes.
AMOROSO was released in 1977.
BRASIL was released in 1981.

| | Eros Ramazzotti Eros (Italian) CD (1997) Italian
Emilie Jolie CD music
$9.05 The Italian version of EROS contains 2 songs that do not appear on the Spanish version. It also contains 8 songs that are completely re-recorded.
At the height of his popularity, after establishing a fan base for himself across much of Western Europe as well as parts of the Spanish-language world, Italian singer/songwriter Eros Ramazzotti took some time off during the late '90s and released Eros, a greatest-hits compilation comprised primarily of newly recorded material. The 16-track compilation is comprised of five songs that appear in their original versions, nine that have been newly recorded specifically for this compilation, and two new ones. While the decision to re-record the majority of the inclusions is unusual for a greatest-hits album, Eros ends up being a much more interesting album than it would have been otherwise. The nine songs that are re-recorded are the early hits of Ramazzotti, namely "Terra Promesa" (originally released in 1984), "Una Storia Importante" (1985), "Adesso Tu" (1986), "Ma Che Bello Questo Amore" (1987), "Musica E" (1988), "Se Bastasse una Canzone" (1990), "Cose Della Vita" (1993), and a couple others. The five songs that appear in their original versions are more recent hits such as "Un'Altra Te" (1993) and "Più Bella Cosa" (1996). In fact, none of the songs on Eros predates 1993, and only two predate 1996. As a result, Eros sounds as if it were a totally new album -- a brilliantly written one, at that -- rather than a compilation of greatest hits. For instance, there's no trace whatsoever of the sometimes-bombastic synth pop style that characterized Ramazzotti's mid- to late-'80s output. In its place is a more subtle, relatively cutting-edge style of sleek adult contemporary pop/rock that embraces modern-day production technology (note the drum programming in particular), sophisticated string arrangements, and sharper guitar leads. This brings new life to the old material; for instance, the drum programming of "Ma Che Bello Questo
| | Art Of Amalia Rodrigues CD (1998)
Emilie Jolie music CDs
$11.39 Portugal's most beloved performer, Amalia Rodrigues is celebrated as the leading light of the spare, melancholy musical style known as fado. Both a film actress and a musical icon, Rodrigues garnered attention with both her striking beauty and her deeply expressive voice. Starting out as a singer in Lisbon, Rodrigues moved on to the nightclubs of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which led to her success as an international star.
This impressive 18-track disc compiles many of Rodrigues's finest recordings, with most tracks dating from her heyday in the 1950s and '60s. Highlights of THE ART OF AMALIA RODRIGUES include the lilting, mournful classics "Nem As Paredes Confesso," "Lisboa Antigua," "Coimbra," and "Foi Deus," all of which feature beautifully minimal string backing and, of course, Rodrigues's plaintive and highly nuanced vocals. Hailed as the Queen of Fado and frequently cited as one of the best female singers in any genre, Rodrigues is well represented by this concise and carefully selected collection, which serves as an ideal introduction to her captivating and emotionally resonant music.

| | High Kings CD (2008) Digipak
$14.89 The debut album by the High Kings was issued by the same folks who had a hand in Celtic Woman and Riverdance, and consists of easy listening and buffed-and-polished Irish folk music of appeal to an audience that is comparatively massive for the world music fringe: this album made the lower levels of the Billboard Top 200 album chart. The High Kings is glossy and polite -- targeted perhaps toward listeners who enjoyed the pennywhistle on Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" -- even on tunes that strive to be upbeat and frolicsome. ~ Stewart Mason
The debut album by the High Kings, brought to you by the same folks who had a hand in faux-Celtic abominations like Celtic Woman and Riverdance, brings up an important philosophical question: just exactly what is the demographic for this blend of middlebrow easy listening and buffed-and-polished Irish folk music? More to the point, what does that audience (which was comparatively massive for the world music fringe: this album actually made the lower depths of the Billboard Top 200 album chart) get out of the antiseptic gloss of The High Kings that isn't available to them through the equally cleaned-up and mainstream likes of, say, the Chieftains or Clannad? Listening to the painfully polite and over-manicured tunes here, it seems like the target market for The High Kings is those consumers whose first exposure to the pennywhistle was Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On," and who just naturally assume that that's what Irish folk music sounds like as a result. That sense of maudlin earnestness permeates nearly the entire album, even on tunes that are striving to be upbeat and frolicsome, such as the unbearably twee "Marie's Wedding." The nadir is an a cappella version of Richard Thompson's "From Galway to Graceland" that takes a lovely albeit slightly moist tune and turns it into sickly, sentimental treacle that makes the Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem sound like Thin Lizzy in comparison. People who actually like Celtic music sh

$17.45 | | Dinah Washington Mellow Mama CD (1992)
$9.95 The late Dinah Washington remains one of the greatest American song stylists ever. There are precious few singers whose work could transcend genre, who were comfortable in more than one or even several styles. Ray Charles and Bing Crosby are two that come to mind; Dinah Washington is another. MELLOW MAMA is Washington in her formative years, when she sang with jazz and early R&B bands in the late 1940s and early `50s. MELLOW isn't nearly as polished as her more famous recordings, but it's exciting to hear Washington's voice developing and her youthful, spunky delivery.

| | Dogpound Hellbum CD (2006) (Import) Finland
$15.69 Sweden's Dogpound excels at gritty, no-frills rock, as revealed on this 2003 album, which includes "Bleed," "Going Down in Flames," and "For My Sins."
Swedish melodic metal sensations Dogpound unleash their second album 'A Night In The Gutter' which delivers soaring melodic vocals combined with a grooving modern edge to convey a sound that is unique to the band. The powerful vocals of Henrik 'Hea' Andersson drive the music with rich melodies and classic harmonisation that blends with the crunchy and melodic guitar work of Mikael 'Micke' Dahlqvist to stunning effect. This is further enhanced by the burning rhythm section of Fredric 'Figge' Danielsson on bass and the drums of Calle 'Tuka' Boman.'A Night In The Gutter' is the follow up the 'The Hellbum' released in 2003 and sees a more refined sound than the debut with even stronger songs and production. The band have also contributed to tribute albums for Gary Moore (Give Us Moore - Lion Music) and Ritchie Blackmore (Blackmore's Castle II-Lion Music) since the release of their debut.
| | Jandek Chair Behind A Window CD (1982)
$7.29 This reissue of Texas outsider musician Jandek's 1982 album incorporates the solo acoustic artist's first electric guitar performance, as well as bass and drum accompaniment. Jandek's music has been described as like listening to a "listless, beer-numbed trailer-park teen...mumbling to himself and accidentally stumbling over his guitar." Here, he intones his often surprisingly affecting lyrics over random guitar accompaniment, with occasional bursts of Sonic Youth-style volume--though to presume Jandek has any discernible musical influences would be a mistake. Occasionally delicate, sometimes grotesque, and frequently unhinged, CHAIR BEHIND A WINDOW is very much an acquired taste.
| | Amerie Touch CD (2005) Bonus Track; Japan
$36.09 Since Amerie broke onto the scene with her 2002 debut, ALL I HAVE, she's acted in films and been a BET television host. So for her sophomore effort, TOUCH, the D.C. native drew from these experiences in taking a bolder and more explicit approach towards revealing a more sensual and self-confident side of her persona. The 20-something songbird gets straight to the point on the Lil' Jon-produced title track, where she alternates between coyness and aggression over a squiggly synth line with a faintly Arabic flavor. In working her hip-hop/soul groove, Amerie gets plenty of mileage from vintage samples, from the Roy Ayers saxophone riff that gooses the heavy thump of "Rolling Down My Face" to the Gamble & Huff-penned Ebonys sample at the heart of the bonus "Why Don't We Fall in Love" Richcraft Remix. But nothing hits the mark more than "1 Thing," a go-go flavored slice of funk driven by a sample from the Meters' "Oh Calcutta." Upping the ante even more is a second version featuring plenty of sass from guest rapper Eve.
Japanese edition of the acclaimed R&B singer's 2005 full length album includes a cover of Diana Ross's "I'm Coming Out" that does not appear on the U.S. equivalent.
Asian import with one bonus track.

| | Pharaoh's Daughter Haran CD (2007) Digipak
$13.25 Led by the sweet vocals of singer Basya Schechter, Pharaoh's Daughter weave some very intricate musical patterns that are somewhat psychedelic, primarily worldly and generally quite satisfying. For example, the delicate opener "By Way of Haran" sets the tone for a slightly late-'60s feeling one would get from listening to the Doors, particularly when the keyboard comes in halfway through. The band revisits this realm often, especially with the slow, creeping "Ka Ribon," which shows Schechter's strong vocals over the Middle Eastern arrangement which builds with each verse into a fuller, more appealing and slightly jazzy format. This feeling returns later on during the shuffling, tango-tinged "Hashomer." Although things simmer down with the hypnotic "Samai," Pharaoh's Daughter return with the sultry and stylish "Hagar" which is an early highlight off the record. Perhaps the greatest asset the group has is the ability to seamlessly blend influences from rock and pop along with traditional Middle Eastern influences without compromising or undermining either realm. This is proven again during "Ven Hermosa" which has a fine rhythm that twists and turns throughout the song. Although Schechter gives a myriad of strong performances, perhaps her best is during the infectious "Yona" which is a warm, folksy kind of effort. ~ Jason MacNeil
Pharaoh's Daughter: Shanir Blumenkranz (acoustic guitar); Basya Schechter (oud); Meg Okura (violin); Uri Sharlin (accordion); Jason Linder (keyboards); Yuval Lyon (drums); Mathis Kunzli (percussion); Daphna Mor (background vocals).
Additional personnel: Clef Hangers (vocals); Frederik Rubens, Adam Levy (guitar); Yacuba Sissoko (kora); Alan Kushan (santur); Lila Skalar (violin); Raquy Danziger (kamancha); Anthon Coleman (piano); Aaron Johnson (drums); Daniel Freedman, Mauro Refosco (percussion); Tomer Tzur (rik); Michal Cohen (background vocals).
