The only official live recording of the Buzzcocks splinter group headed by Howard DeVoto.
Recorded live in 1980, PLAY presents the pioneering U.K. post-punk act Magazine performing in Melbourne, Australia. Former Buzzcock Howard Devoto leads his ensemble through a set that primarily draws on REAL LIFE ('78) and THE CORRECT USE OF SOAP ('80), including fierce art-rock classics such as "The Light Pours Out of Me" and "A Song From Under the Floorboards." Like its peers Wire, the group doesn't disappoint in concert, with Barry Adamson (later of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds) providing a potent bass rumble and temporary guitarist Robin Simon (Ultravox) applying dynamic six-string flourishes. Though PLAY is primarily geared towards Magazine completists, it should easily appeal to many other post-punk diehards.
Magazine: Howard Devoto (vocals); Robin Simon (guitar); Dave Formula (keyboards); Barry Adamson (bass guitar); John Doyle (drum).
Play Music Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) Memento of a hot live band. A sensational live album, though a definite feel of truncation at times. The recording is top notch live, the players were hot on the night. There must be more of this show in the archives- an extended edition would be a treat. Taped at a show at Melbournes' Festival Hall I believe- a former wrestling palace. I would put a twitchy Howard De Voto up against any wrestler. Submitted by David Martin (Mt. Just as good live Magazine were a seminal band of the late seventies/early eighties and this is a seminal album. It delivers many of the best songs in their repertoire (although not as comprehensive as the 'Rays and Hail' 'Best of') and delivers them in style. If this album is anything to go by, they were a great live band - tight, punchy and a great grasp of dynamics. Highlights are 'Definitive Gaze', 'The Light Pours Out of Me', 'Parade' and of course 'Song from Under the Floorboards'. This last song contains one of the great opening passage from any song ofthe punk/new wave era - "I am angry, I am ill and I'm as ugly as sin - My irritability keeps me alive and kicking". Superb. My favorite live album This is such a tight live album and so much fun! I never got a chance to see them live but this recording is exciting that it makes their studio work seem weaker. I've been listening to this recording for nearly twenty years and it hasn't worn thin. If interested then you will not be wasted effort on this! the correct use of play Gives a good sense of the band live; this is a fine work that must be possessed, if only to get a good sense of the progressive punk direction of the time; makes the listener wonder why this stuff isn't played on the air; still sounds good today, and will tomorrow... | | Chris Stamey Travels In The South CD (2004)
Play CD music
$13.75 A founding leader of the influential cult band the dB's, Chris Stamey has spent most of last 15 years producing other people's discs (Alejandro Escovedo, Yo La Tengo, Whiskeytown) rather than creating his own. Not counting a 1995 instrumental album, Travels in the South marks his first record since 1991, when he released both the solo Fireworks and Mavericks, a duet disc with his old dB's partner Peter Holsapple. South, however, shows little sign of rustiness. The album kicks off with the glorious "14 Shades of Green," a chimey gem that takes a nostalgic look at a hometown. This leadoff track also establishes the theme of traveling that runs through the disc. Songs like "Insomnia," "Ride," and the title track all touch upon the feeling of life in transit. The sublime "In Spanish Harlem" takes a Paul Simon-esque look at New York City but with a decidedly eased-back Southern tempo. The entire album, ...
| | Cure Join The Dots: B-Sides & Rarities 1978-2001 (The Fiction Years) CDs (2004) Remastered
Play music CDs
$38.29 Recorded between 1978 & 2001. Includes liner notes by Robert Smith, Simon Gallup, and Johnny Black.
A remarkable four-disc set of B-sides and rarities, JOIN THE DOTS serves as a sort of alternate history for the Cure, one of the world's most beloved post-punk/alt-rock bands. Painstakingly compiled by Cure frontman (and the group's only constant member) Robert Smith, DOTS provides dozens of glimpses into the literal flip-side of their singles by collecting many long-lost tracks, including the classic songs previously featured only on the cassette version of STARING AT THE SEA: THE SINGLES.
Disc one begins in the late 1970s and consists of early tracks that show the Cure in a wildly adventurous mode--tearing into the punky "Pillbox Tales," drifting through the gloomy "Descent," and bouncing along to the oddly danceable "Throw Your Foot." By disc two, ...

| | Howard Devoto Jerky Versions Of The Dream CD (1983) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Play CD music
$9.69 Erstwhile Buzzcock and former front man of post-punk outfits Magazine and Luxuria, Howard Devoto has always been somewhat difficult to peg musically. After disbanding Magazine in the early '80s, Devoto went on to pursue a short-lived solo career, resulting in his lone 1983 effort, JERKY VERSIONS OF THE DREAM. More pop-based than any of his previous efforts, the songs all feature Devoto's distinctive croon--a discomfiting mix of seduction and caustic menace. Like his material with Magazine, Devoto's lyrics are ...

$15.65 FUNKIFY YOUR LIFE is the definitive Meters collection, capturing the group's transformation from slinky instrumentalists to rollicking funkateers. Disc 1, THE JOSIE YEARS, overflows with the band's trademark sound-Art Porter's breezy Hammond organ playing, George Porter's bubbling bass, Ziggy Modeliste's in-the-pocket timekeeping, and Leo Nocentelli's crackling jazz-flavored guitar style. This batch of '60s-era tracks contains the Meters' lone Top 40 hits ...

| | Isley Brothers 3+3 CD (1973) Bonus Track; Remastered
Play album
$5.95 This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
Recorded in 1973. Originally released on T-Neck (32453). Includes liner notes by David Ritz.
Though the Isley Brothers recorded some excellent material in their original line-up as a trio, their sound and vision expanded when the group itself expanded to a sextet in the early '70s. 3+3 marks the inception of the Isleys' new incarnation, one that features, in addition to Ronald, O'Kelly, and Rudolph, younger brothers Ernie (guitar) and Marvin (bass), and cousin Chris Japser (keyboards). On 3+3 the band's slick, besuited Tamla/Motown soul was replaced by grittier, funkier stuff with some truly spectacular instrumental prowess.
The Isleys had always been given to performing reverent, stretched-out covers of songs they loved, and 3+3 has its share, with treatments of Seals & Crofts's "Summer Breeze," ...
