| | Tradition Runs Deep CD (1998)
Excerpts From The Chillspace music CDs
$30.29 In the Rykodisc family of labels, Tradition taps the rich roots of those indigenous American art forms blues, jazz, and folk. This label sample consists of 15 classic tracks digitally remastered to a stunning level of sonic limpidity. The compilation starts off with Mississippi Fred McDowell. Here playing "steakbone slide guitar," he exhibits on "You Got to Move" a living blues sound rich in both a fingered and vocal vibrato. From Etta Baker we get a beautiful, syncopated, instrumental version of "John Henry." From Leadbelly we get "In New Orleans (House of the Rising Sun)" taken from the first Tradition release after Rykodisc re-christened it as a mid-priced label of seminal American music. Also in the blues and folk section is the great folk troubadour Woody Guthrie ("More Pretty Gals Than One") and the percussive acoustic guitar and rich baritone of Big Bill Broonzy ("Baby, Please Don't Go"). Contralto folk balladeer Odetta, a major inspiration to Bob Dylan, is present along with creepy murder ballad "Down in the Willow Garden" by sweetly harmonizing folk choral ensemble Kossy Sisters. More country blues guitar is celebrated by the inclusion of Lightnin' Hopkins, Blind Lemon Jefferson, and Brownie ...

| | Barbra Streisand Color Me Barbra CD (1966)
Excerpts From The Chillspace album
$9.79 Following the mega-success of the previous year's My Name Is Barbra TV special and two tie-in records, CBS aired Color Me Barbra in March 1966. The album of the same name hit number three two months later and is a gem of a record, a genuinely fun album. Never has Barbra injected so much of her knack for comedy into her songs. Covers, standards, and show tunes are all Streisand-sized and the results are grand numbers with sweeping arrangements and unmistakable vocals.
"One Kiss" is a tender ballad, while Chopin's "The Minute Waltz" is transformed into an upbeat, goofy track. Barbra declares her independence in the similarly brisk "Gotta Move," which includes an excellent horn section. In "Non C'est Rien" she tries her hand at French and ...
| | Buckwheat Zydeco Down Home Live! CD (2001)
Excerpts From The Chillspace CD music
$10.15 Recorded live at El Sid O's Zydeco and Blues Club, Lafayette, Louisiana on November 23, 2000. Includes liner notes by Todd Mouton.
Stanley "Buckwheat" Dural, Jr. returned to his hometown of Lafayette, LA, to celebrate Thanksgiving 2000. The band played a three-hour-plus set of hot zydeco at El Sid O's Zydeco & Blues Club, 73 minutes of which are captured here. Everyone should have as much fun at his or her job as Buckwheat Zydeco does. Relentlessly upbeat, the band puts out a raucous, brassy wall of sound that impels the listener to dance. This is a band who will let no groove go before their time. Though the release includes a scant nine tracks, none is shorter than five and a half minutes and the longest is 13. Dural uses his piano accordion like a handheld orchestra, playing thick chords and rippling riffs. Michael Melchione's stadium rock guitar work would sound out of place if it weren't for the level of intensity maintained by the rest of the band. They bring the pace down only twice on the disc, both times with the only non-Dural-penned tunes. They stroll majestically on Fats Domino's "Walking to New Orleans." They end their set with a heartfelt rendition of the Stones' "Beast of Burden" that sounds like it was written for them. The only drawback to the release is that which plagues many live recordings -- a little too much repetitive stage patter. If listeners can get past that and the feeling of regret over missing the actual concert, Down Home Live will find a place in their party music collection. ~ Peggy Latkovich
Personnel: Stanley Dural (vocals, accordion, keyboards); Melvin Veazie, Michael ...
