Fifty songs by Val Doonican may seem like overkill, but there is something about the man's voice that makes this set work, even for a non-fan. It's not just the attractive intonation and the care that he brings to each song -- which encompasses everything from folk ("Scarlet Ribbons") and country-pop standards ("King of the Road") to covers of '60s rock numbers ("All My Lovin'," "If I Were a Carpenter") and pop standards ("Windmills of Your Mind") -- but the sincerity of his singing; he seems to "live" the song in his laid-back but effective manner. The mastering is superb, bringing out the richness and depth of Doonican's fine, low tenor voice, plus such little embellishments as the fine modulations over certain phrases, which at times recall Richard Harris in his pop-singer phase, and at other moments recall Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues. The selection includes all of his hits for Decca, and most of his best album tracks, dating between 1966 and 1986. It's all pretty impressive, especially for those with a taste for pop or country-pop vocals -- Perry Como fans may especially want to check this out, but there's also good reason for fans of Glen Campbell, Tennessee Ernie Ford, and Jim Reeves to give this set a try. ~ Bruce Eder Very Best: His Special Years Music Val Doonican Very Best: His Special Years Songs | 1. | 59th Street Bridge Song |

| | Train My Private Nation CD (2003) Bonus Tracks; Japan
Very Best: His Special Years CD music
$36.45 "Calling All Angels" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and for Best Rock Song.
After scoring a big hit with "Drops of Jupiter" in 2001, Train continues to shoot for the pop-rock brass ring on their 2003 follow-up. MY PRIVATE NATION is full of grandly unspooling major-key melodies, big guitars with grand-canyon reverb, and a widescreen production approach that simultaneously gets the maximum rock punch and pop appeal out of every song. Without incorporating any overt roots elements such as alt-country of folk-rock tropes, Train still manages to sound overwhelmingly American and rootsy. Stylistically, their affinity is seemingly more with Counting Crows or the Wallflowers than with Wilco or the Jayhawks, but you can still see amber waves of grain unfolding before your eyes as MY PRIVATE NATION spreads its sonic wings.
Following a hit is a tough thing for any band, and for Train, a cult band that literally came out of nowhere to land a monster single like "Drops of Jupiter" and a platinum album to boot, the pressure to deliver something "more" from label execs is intense. In addition, usually when a band decides to scrap its plans for one album and go back to the drawing board and do something else, it doesn't bode well for the finished product. Train has turned the tables on the redo jinx. Creatively, My Private Nation, Train's third album, is the moment this band has worked for since it started making records. Bringing Brendan O'Brien back on board as producer (perhaps the best rock producer out there right now) and as a co-writer on three songs, Train has upped the aesthetic ante by stripping away any notion that it has to prove that it is "sincere" as a band. The songs speak for themselves. The opening track, "Calling All Angels," which also serves as the first single, is the one song the Counting Crows wish they could still write. It's a huge rock song that signifies what the rest of the album elaborates on. Guitars, drums, backwards tracking of keyboards, and a huge chorus make it an anthem. But it's not so much how hooky and beautiful the tune is -- and is it ever -- as what it says: That in a time of great confusion, loss, and disorientation, one does not call for redemption, but asks for a sign of inspiration, for the courage to ...
