Critics of Euro-dance music tend to dismiss its artists as faceless, but Denis and Denyse LePage -- collectively the Canadian Hi-NRG duo Lime -- are hardly faceless and certainly deserve credit for being recognizable. While Denis LePage brings a gruff, rock-like vocal style to Lime's Euro-dance grooves, Denyse LePage tends to sing in a high voice and sounds more R&B-influenced. Put them together and you have an appealing combination. Lime never became pop/Top 40 superstars in the U.S., but in dance clubs that played a lot of Hi-NRG, the male/female duo commanded much respect in the 1980s. One of the Lime LPs that club DJs were quick to notice was Unexpected Lovers, which came out on the Matra label in Canada but was released by TSR in the U.S. The haunting title song was a huge club hit, and while the rest of the album falls short of the title song's excellence, it's generally enjoyable -- those who appreciate Euro-dance grooves will easily get into cuts like "I'm Falling in Love," "Say You Love Me," and "My Lovely Angel." Meanwhile, "Do Your Time on the Planet" combines the Euro-beat with synth-funk, and the instrumental "Are You Being Untrue Tonight" isn't unlike something Giorgio Moroder would have produced. Released when Mercury Records was still located in Chicago, IL, back in 1973, the second album from Bachman-Turner Overdrive was the first to break through in a big way. First the hit single "Let It Ride" went Top 25 circa March of 1974, then the anthem "Taking Care of Business" went Top 15 the summer of that year. By October they would top the charts with "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" from the follow-up LP, 1974's Not Fragile, but their seven chart songs were all made possible by this album and these two songs, "Let It Ride" and "Takin' Care of Business," in particular. "Let It Ride" features one of C.F. Turner's best vocals; keeping that gargle-with-Draino diesel sound down to a minimum, the song has two major guitar riffs, one a strum, the other from Led Zeppelin's 1970 "Immigrant Song," an inverted mutation of Randy Bachman's own "American Woman" riff which also hit in 1970. That "Takin' Care of Business," which was written solely by Randy Bachman and contains his vocals, as well as the Turner/Bachman co-write "Takin' Care of Business," are light years ahead of the other six songs on this album is an understatement. Ric Ocasek's songs were influenced by the Velvet Underground and the punk rock movement, but had a slick pop/rock sheen which proved very successful. After a demo version of "Just What I Needed" became a listener favorite on WBCN in Boston (the bands' homebase), they were pursued by record companies. THE CARS was recorded in 2 weeks in London, England.
This ranks as one of the best debut albums from a rock band. The Cars are filed under rock, but they are closer to power pop than any other genre. Ric Ocasek sounded like a cross between the Raspberries and Television, punk sound with a pop attitude. The giveaway was the irresistible harmony-ridden hooks in just about every one of his songs. Listen again to "You're All I've Got Tonight," "Just What I Needed" or "My Best Friend's Girl" and be thrilled. Lots of chunka chunka guitar and Mamas And Papas harmonies, and rarely a dull moment. They managed only six albums in 20 years, but they never bettered this.

Freeways was the final Randy Bachman album of the first BTO era, released in 1977 after their first of many "greatest-hits" collections put much of their chart activity in a tidy package on 1976's Best of B.T.O. (So Far). The price for Freeways fluctuates on Ebay and Half.com, making the album one of the more collectible of the post-hit BTO era. A Swedish seller listed it at six dollars in April of 2002 while a NY merchant had it at $24.99. At Half.com it went for $100.01 and $89.99. Rare and out of print, there is also a combo CD pairing this classic up with Bachman-Turner Overdrive II. "Can We All Come Together" isn't a bad album track, nor is C.F. Turner's "Life Still Goes On (I'm Lonely)," but there are no nuggest as found on Four Wheel Drive, Not Fragile, Bachman-Turner Overdrive II, or even Head On. Everything flows nice enough, resulting in a consistent and easy-to-listen-to batch of songs; it's just that what's missing is the antagonism, the push and pull of Bachman's partnership with a Burton Cummings or someone else to vent his frustrations on -- the thing that makes for more interesting material.
