Although Freddie Mercury had a legitimate solo career in Europe, the Queen singer's solo output was largely ignored stateside (since Queen's albums weren't selling that well in the U.S. during the mid- to late '80s, you wouldn't expect Mercury's solo material to exactly light up the charts). But Mercury managed to score quite a few solo hits back home in the U.K., especially his 1985 outing Mr. Bad Guy, as well as an assortment of singles and a vocal tour de force with opera singer Montserrat Caballe, Barcelona, all of which serve as the basis for the ten-track collection The Freddie Mercury Album. As with the other Queen members who have issued solo recordings, Mercury's solo material does not match the high quality work of his full-time band. That said, there are a few tracks that could have easily been reworked as Queen songs (in fact, one of Mercury's solo tracks, "Made in Heaven" -- which isn't included here -- was reworked and served as the title track for a 1995 posthumous Queen collection), including "Love Kills," "Mr. Bad Guy," and "Let's Turn It On" (the latter of which includes some very Brian May-like guitar work). To sample the finest tracks of Mercury's solo career, The Freddie Mercury Album is a worthy collection. [The Great Pretender is the U.S. version of The Freddie Mercury Album, which was issued around the same time and featured a slightly different track listing.] ~ Greg Prato

Freddie Mercury Album songs
$11.99 (MP3 Available for Download) INNUENDO would turn out to be Queen's swan song, as it was the last album released during vocalist Freddie Mercury's lifetime--he passed away several months after the album's release. Expanding on the successful back-to-basics sound of 1989's THE MIRACLE, INNUENDO was another solid outing. And like it's predecessor, ...

| | Elton John Live In Australia With The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra CD (1987) Remastered
Freddie Mercury Album MP3 Album
$10.79 (MP3 Available for Download) Elton John spent much of the '80s in a whirlwind of personal upheaval and his musical unevenness included working with lyricists besides Bernie Taupin (an unthinkable notion during their run at the top of the charts during the '70s). EJ went for a fresh start by auctioning off all the costumes and props that he'd become renowned for during his over-the-top live shows. Right before doing this, the flamboyant entertainer revisited the past one more time by recreating his greatest hits live using orchestral accompaniment.
The resulting LIVE IN AUSTRALIA found the John donning a powdered wig and 17th century garb to lead this ensemble, along with members of his regular touring band. Older material such as "Burn Down The Mission," "Madman Across The Water" and "Take Me To The Pilot" is particularly breathtaking as presented in all its symphonic splendor while more ...

| | Dick Gaughan Outlaws & Dreamers CD (2001)
Freddie Mercury Album MP3 Album
$11.99 Former Boys of the Lough and Five Hand Reel guitarist and vocalist Dick Gaughan continues his exploration of Celtic-tinged originals and covers on the 2001 release Outlaws and Dreamers. Crisp and fiery guitar work contrasts his strong, clear voice on Phil Ochs' "When I'm Gone and Si Kahn's "What You Do With What You've Got," as well as on the traditional "Dowie Dens o Yarrow." Most of the tracks are simply Gaughan alone accompanied by his guitar, with a few fiddle and concertina highlights from former Battlefield Band member Brian McNeill. After nearly 30 years performing music, it would be easy for Gaughan to grow dull and complacent, but Outlaws and Dreamers proves that he still has the same spark that was evident on his earliest releases. ~ Zac Johnson
Scottish singer-songwriter-guitarist Dick Gaughan describes "Outlaws & Dreamers," his fifth and latest Appleseed CD, as "a bit of a departure from what I usually get up to in the studio. It's pretty much just me - voice and guitar - and Brian McNeill on fiddle and concertina on two tracks. I decided I should concentrate on getting the performances and spirit right and go for as 'live' a feel as possible." Gaughan's previous recordings in a 30-year career include those as a member of the Celtic bands The Boys of the Lough, Five Hand Reel and Clan Alba and over a dozen albums as a solo or occasional duo artist. His music has never been accused of slickness or commercialism, and the sparse approach of "Outlaws & Dreamers" provides a particularly bracing dose of undiluted Gaughan, one of the world's most stirring musicians. In the CD's liner notes, Gaughan defines "outlaws" as "those who refuse to conform to society's conventions and prejudices." By that definition, the material (and recording method) on "Outlaws & Dreamers" could be regarded as a tribute to those outlaws and their quest for personal and universal freedom through activism and self-determination. Whether the songs on the CD are original or interpreted, most carry freedom as their subtext. In the version here of Woody Guthrie's "Tom Joad" (based on John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath"), Gaughan pledges, "Wherever people aren't free/Wherever working people are fighting for their rights/That's where I'm gonna be." At the other extreme, Gaughan celebrates the peaceful beauty and unattended freedom of the titular "Wild Roses," a song by Texas performer Kimmie Rhodes. The interior strength of those with disabilities is paid tribute on the Si Kahn composition "What You Do With What You've Got," a perennial Gaughan show-opener. The freedom to experience life is found in Gaughan's cover of Phil Ochs' "When I'm Gone," the freedom to protest in Graham Moore's "Tom Paine's Bones," and the freedom of self-sacrifice in "Strong Women Rule Us All," a lesson in Scottish mythology by Brian ...
