John Lydon cursing the audience, the audience responding with hoots and catcalls; Jah Wobble and Keith Levine screwing around in between songs--the hate is palpable. The songs and action is standard PIL, rickety and dour, the recording starting and ending abruptly; sound quality is very good. EMI. 1996.
Released primarily to cut down on bootlegs of the same concerts from early 1980, Paris au Printemps catches Public Image Limited at the peak of the band's career. While the album was criticized at the time for being nothing more than a live album and thus not adhering to the group's avant-garde rhetoric, the music more than makes up for any breakdown in the band's ideology. Jah Wobble issues forth pseudo-reggae liquid basslines while John Lydon moans and whelps over heavy, almost free-form guitar from Keith Levene. Although the songs remain quite similar to their album versions, there are far more prominent synth effects on this recording, adding more of an element of dark psychedelia to the mix and enhancing the menacing aspect to such songs as "Bad Baby," and the droning "Careering." Meanwhile, the epics -- "Theme" from First Issue, and "Poptones" from Metal Box -- sound arguably even better live. Unfortunately, while the music is great, the album has been pasted together quite sloppily from two concerts, placing the tracks in a bizarre order while leaving out some of the group's best numbers. Nonetheless, Paris au Printemps is a fine release, especially in the absence of any other live recordings of the band from this period. Paris Au Printemps Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) The last hurrah of Lydon, Wobble, and Levene "Paris in the Spring" features the three core members of the original PiL: Levene, Lydon and Wobble. There may be bootlegs out there with the original band members on it, but this remains a certifiable live recording. At the time of it's release, this album was considered a knock-off. "Metal Box/Second Edition" had just come out and been crowned a "master piece" and Virgin and PiL wanted to rake in more money. Time has made one wistful for the original band - considering what Lydon has put out since (except some singles and "Album").
What is striking is how much more of the disco groove is found on this live recording, particularly on "Poptones". This is a solid recording and the sound is great. It is a rather short cd (less than an hour) and there is little banter by Lydon - and the bits here are inmature and hardly insulting. By the way, if you're a completist ----WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? If you are just getting to know PiL, try either "First Issue" or "Second Edition" first. By the way, this is infinately superior to "Live in Tokyo" (which no one should buy). Nightmarish Intensity yet Great Fun I bought the vinyl when it was first released. Hadnt listened to it in years, but dusted it off after having done the same with metal box.
At high school (79/80) I was slagged off by the Stranglers fans in particular for liking PiL, not to mention the other factions. PiL upset people at the time even other punks. A guy sold me Metal Box for Ł5 at the time cos he hated it so much.
Atmosphere is palpable on this recording with mutual fear & loathing between band and audience. The negative energy seems to push the band to greater things. Keith Levene's work on Careering, esp the synth (Sequential Circuits Prophet 6 I think..I'm a guitarist) is mind boggling, Similar is Theme, where these industrial sonic landscapes are equally compelling.
I think this is Poptones, fully evolved and unique. If you want to learn the guitar part, this is the version to play along.
The natural genius of Jah Wobble is all over this album. He and John Peel pushed my teen brain to Dub/Reggae too.
I wish they could have stayed like this just a wee bit longer.
Buy it. Submitted by alangilbert26 (Barrhead, Glasgow, Scotland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Wadada Leo Smith Kabell Years 1971-1979 CDs (2004) Box Set
Paris Au Printemps album
$39.29 KABELL YEARS 1971-1979 contains 4 LPs originally released on the Kabell label: CREATIVE MUSIC-1 (1972)/REFLECTAVITY (1974)/SONG OF HUMANITY (1976)/AHKREANVENTION (1979).
Trumpeter, composer, music theorist, and cultural activist Wadada Leo Smith has been a leading light in the jazz and new music vanguard for nearly 40 years. His numerous recordings for Black Saint, Moers Music, Pi, Boxholder, ECM, Tzadik, and other labels in Europe, Japan, and the United States are all elements of the evolutionary progress of his wonderfully idiosyncratic system called "new world music." This four-CD box set on John Zorn's Tzadik label is incontrovertible proof of the label's mission to issue music by artists he respects regardless of commercial value or "critical" (d)evaluation. Kabell was a label set up by Smith to document his theories regarding not only the structure of music but its sonorities, its integrational possibilities with society at large, and of course more requisite ideas about the development of harmony, tonal integration, and the language of elocution he created. The box compiles music from four albums: the truly moving and beautiful first Kabell release (Creative Music -- 1), which featured Smith solo using trumpet, flügelhorn, and a plethora of percussions and stringed instruments; the trio sides with pianist Anthony Davis and bassist Wes Brown from the second Kabell album (Reflectativity); the trio and quintet sides with his ...

| | Birdlips Cardboard Wings CD (2008)
Paris Au Printemps music CDs
$11.49 “Cardboard Wings reminds me in one moment of the music played in the back of a gyspy’s caravan and in the next it seems to slide out from an open window overlooking the busy intersection of the world. The occasional plucking of a banjo gives these songs a rustic feel, but then there’s a haunted modern flavor in the mix that is equal parts Nick Drake and Mazzy Star... There is some strange magic in this music and Birdlips now has me under its spell.” - Shaun Harvey, cvilleMUSE“...the romantic Cardboard Wings combines the outdoor, lyrical approach of Wordsworth with the terse intensity of Shelley. A traveler\'s confessional lament, the album jumbles flute, guitar, and piano into raw folk melodies; they\'ve been plucked from various countries, but they still come out sounding predestined, like a perfect black-and-white film where nothing is out of place.” - Afton Woodward, NPR“...the updated, sophisticated and polished version of everyone’s favorite lo-fi folk artists of the 60’s and 70’s. Were Nick Drake playing music today, he’d be touring with Birdlips. Usher’s voice is something like Jeff Buckley meets Andrew Bird – commanding and a little rough around ...
