| | Queen Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 CD Queen Discography of CDs
Released just about a month before Freddie Mercury's untimely death in November 1991, a second best-of collection titled Greatest Hits, Vol. 2, was issued in England only. While the album was resequenced (with other tracks added) and released as Classic Queen in the U.S. in 1992, Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 features all of the band's European hits from 1982 through 1991. Since 1981's Greatest Hits went on to become one of the best-selling albums of all time in Queen's homeland (spending 63 weeks on the charts when first released, and reappearing steadily ever since), the band had racked up enough hits to warrant a follow-up ten years later. While Queen's hits from this era may not be as stellar as their '70s predecessors, they were all still very compelling rock compositions. Tracks such as "Radio Ga Ga," "Friends Will Be Friends," "I Want to Break Free," and "I'm Going Slightly Mad" show that the band could still compose pop gems, while the hard rockers "I Want It All," "Headlong," "One Vision," and "Hammer to Fall" kept their longtime fans happy. Also included are a few of the band's more epic compositions -- "The Miracle," "Innuendo," "Who Wants to Live Forever," and "A Kind of Magic" -- which help round out this second excellent collection of British Queen hits. ~ Greg Prato
International pressing of their greatest hits includes 17 tracks, 'A Kind Of Magic', 'Under Pressure', 'Radio Ga Ga', 'I Want It All', 'I Want To Break Free', 'Innuendo', 'It's A Hard Life', 'Breakthru', 'Who Wants To Live Forever', 'Headlong', 'The Miracle', 'I'm Going Slightly Mad', 'The Invisible Man', 'Hammer To Fall', 'Friends Will Be Friends', 'The Show Must Go On' & 'One Vision'. | | Eddi Reader Angels And Electricity CD (1999)
Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 songs
$12.55 In these health-conscious times, it's tempting to distrust the sweet and pretty. But not everything that tastes good is bad for you. Bear that in mind as you listen to Eddi Reader's latest solo album, on which she teams up with fellow British pop-folkie Boo Hewerdine (who plays guitar, produces, and wrote half the songs) to deliver a luscious program of bittersweet lyrics couched in whipped-cream melodies and airy, largely acoustic production. "Kiteflyer's Hill" takes the threadbare conceit of doomed summer love and turns it into a melancholy but quietly joyful celebration of memory; Reader's version of Hewerdine's "Bell, Book and Candle" beats his own by a mile, primarily due to her gently virtuosic singing; "Follow My Tears" is a heartbreaking portrait of an aging emigrant remembering her good and decent husband and the home they reluctantly left in their youth. No fast songs here -- from beginning to end, this is music that will lull you into a blissful half-doze and mostly keep you there. But that doesn't mean it's boring any more than its sweetness means it's bad for you. ~ Rick Anderson

| | David & David Boomtown CD (1986)
Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 album
$8.09 David & David's Boomtown is a hard look at urban life in the 1980s, a time when many were fulfilling the American Dream of financial success and upward mobility. It is not an easy album to listen to, as the characters depicted in the songs are often dealing with major problems such as drugs and domestic violence. But it is an artful record, full of poetry and convincing stories of the hard times that many silently endured. At times the record is full of pop hooks, and at other stages a more bleak sound dominates. The vocals of David & David are also effective in telling the tales, as often there is a shrill, despondent quality that complements what is being related to the listener. In particular, the drums have kind of a hushed ...

| | Luther Russell Repair CD (2007)
Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 songs
$10.25 Luther Russell's opening cut on Repair -- "Rise and Shine" -- bounces about like a happy bit of '70s pop, the perfect summer song for cruising country roads in one's convertible. The lyrics are profoundly simple, espousing an appreciation for sunny days and a commitment to love. The choruses guarantee the listener's attention, kicking the effervescent mood into high gear. "Everybody Falls," as one might guess from the title, is also about love, or the failure of love. The arrangement, acoustic guitars and strings, and mid-tempo pacing generates a melancholy mood, a sad pretty song. Both songs are gifts of a kind, tracks that flow effortlessly, though obviously each are the result of careful effort on Russell and his collaborators' part. The downside is that these early cuts are difficult to live up to on Repair, and no matter how good the remainder of the material may be, frontloading tracks handicaps the rest of the album. On the fourth track, "Blinking Star," Russell sounds like a more familiar singer/songwriter, supporting the words with an alternative country wrapping. "My Own Blood" reverts to a structure reminiscent ...
