(5 Customer Reviews)
Includes three bonus tracks. Be Bop Deluxe: Bill Nelson (vocals, guitar, harmonica, tubular bells, percussion); Andrew Clark (keyboards); Charlie Tumahai (bass guitar, percussion, background vocals); Simon Fox (drums, percussion). Considered by many to be Be-Bop Deluxe's finest album, SUNBURST FINISH (1976) finds the British art-rock band filling out its sound with the addition of keyboardist Andrew Clark. While Clark brings new sonic textures to the table, the focus of the ensemble's music remains, as always, on frontman/songwriter Bill Nelson and his amazingly adept guitar playing. "Ships in the Night," which recalls a slightly more accessible version of contemporaneous Brian Eno, proved to be the closest the group would come to a hit, while "Blazing Apostles" finds Nelson settling into guitar-hero mode with his deft metallic riffing. SUNBURST FINISH is also a fitting description of the bright sheen that producer John Leckie (XTC, Simple Minds) adds to these songs, giving the disc a bolder aesthetic than the band's previous outings. Along with MODERN MUSIC, which was released later the same year, this album marks the peak of Be-Bop Deluxe's relatively brief recorded legacy. Adding keyboard player Andrew Clark to make Be Bop Deluxe a quartet, Bill Nelson finally found a balance between his virtuosic guitar playing and the demands of pop songwriting. The arrangements were still busy, but the humor of Nelson's music was on display as never before, and the songs frequently were catchy. For the first time, it began to seem that the group had a future beyond serving as a foundation for Nelson's splashy guitar work, as Be Bop Deluxe charted in the U.S. and the U.K. and even scored a Top 25 British hit with "Ships in the Night." ~ William Ruhlmann

| Sunburst Finish Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) Great songs, great band, and Bill Nelson's guitar! It would be easy to lose myself in awe of Bill Nelson's virtuosic guitar work on this album (the solos on "Crying to the Sky" are just one example), but that would miss so much else that makes this CD great. These are great songs, including some beautiful melodies, like "Heavenly Homes" and the haunting "Crystal Gazing." Nelson's songs display some wonderful rhythmic shifts, abruptly changing to Latin dance rhythyms, as in "Sleep That Burns," or suddenly a simple boogie. Nelson's lyrics are sometimes surreal, often ironic ("Blazing Apostles"), and create a drama that matches the intensity of the music. The band plays superbly; the addition of Andrew Clark on keyboards really complements and completes the rich textures of Nelson's guitar. This is a great CD with lots to perceive with repeated listening. Submitted by Ken (New Haven, CT) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful.
One of the best concept albums of all time. Bill Nelsons's awesome licks and lyrics combined with the wonderful production.
This is probably one of the top five albums of the era/genre.(and the best cover) Every track flows into the next. The thunder rolling into "Crying To The Sky" still makes me tear up.
"Hopeing that the clouds I'm climbing aren't hiding the rain.No where left to go,for every show now dissapoints me. Still the ghost of love lost haunts me till my dying day"
From the cover(always though it was symbolic..burning the guitar from the first album) to the buzy signal at the end of "Blazing Apostles" ..a tour de force of 70's glam style.

Awesome! I love this music. Bill Nelson is not only a great guitarist but a wonderful arranger of songs and emotion. It sure is fun reliving this music with thoughts of old friends and the good times i grew up with. If you did'nt grow up with Be Bop Deluxe, check out the samples; "crying to the sky" and "life in the air age". I hope you enjoy this cd and all of Bill Nelson's endeavors. I do. Still great ear and mind candy! First came into possession of this album on vinyl in 1976. One of the best albums I heard then and still holds true - especially Nelson's lyrical content. The three bonus tunes on this CD (purchased 01/04) are indeed a bonus! Marked down to 4 stars now since production methods today are so much more superior - only wish that it could be recorded live in today's studion environment! Back in '76, I thought Nelson was going to be the next 'guitar guy', but obviously like Michael Schenker, he chose to pursue a different path. Still good listening and thought provoking: "Go and tell all your friends that you witnessed the end of the world in a dream!" Submitted by Michael (Peoria, AZ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Wu-Tang Clan: GZA, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, Masta Killa, Method Man, Ol' Dirty Bastard, RZA, Raekwon, U-God. Liner Note Author: Jon Caramanica. "They all showed up." That one line alone in the notes of the Wu-Tang Clan live album Disciples of the 36 Chambers might convince a legion of hip-hop fans to buy the record, if only to (for once) get what they paid for with a Wu-Tang live show. (Truth to tell, so so many unfulfilled promises have been made to fans that they'd be forgiven for suspecting that ODB's photo would slip off the cover on the way out of the store.) Never mind how they were all rounded up, all nine members of the mighty Wu -- yes, the RZA, Genius aka the GZA, Method Man, Ghostface Killah, ODB aka Dirt McGirt, Raekwon, U-God, Masta Killa, and Inspectah Deck, plus a few family members like Cappadonna -- were assembled in one place (San Bernardino) at one time (the evening of July 17, 2004) for a show.
