This 1985 ballet score from Ryuichi Sakamoto, with American guitar virtuoso Arto Lindsay and Japanese percussion whiz Yas-Kaz, features eight stirring tracks.
One of Sakamoto's strangest, most uncompromising albums, Esperanto features music written for a dance performance by New Yorker Melissa Fenley. Using weird, clipped samples of ethnic instruments, electronically modified sound bites, and distorted vocals, Sakamoto builds a very icy soundscape that juts out at the listener like pointy modernist architecture. Leaving lots of breathing space in the arrangements for the dancers, this is music that stretches langorously over rhythms and snatches of melody. "Dolphins" is bright and shiny with its synth bursts and backwards notes; "Adelic Penguins" is the closest Sakamoto gets to techno here, with bits and bops of a melody exploding over a propulsive bassline. A far cry from the more symphonic Sakamoto, but equally intriguing. ~ Ted Mills

SUN FAMILY represents the complete works Balaam & the Angel recorded from the Chapter 22 label.
The original Sun Family, released in 1986, compiled ten songs Balaam & the Angel had recorded at the outset of their career for their own Chapter 22 label, all but one of which had been issued on 1984-1985 EPs. The expanded CD edition, released by Anagram in 2002, adds nine bonus tracks. Taken together, the 19 songs include all 12 of the songs from the 1984-1985 Chapter 22 EPs, though unfortunately the liner notes don't make it clear what the sources of the nine bonus cuts are. Presumably, it's all from the mid-'80s, though it's uncertain whether the six bonus songs that didn't appear on the 1984-1985 EPs are the same versions of the tracks with the same titles that are on their 1986 Virgin EPs. Although this is part of Anagram's goth revival line, it's above average for goth rock, with more of a pop feel and more mainstream production. It's not exactly mainstream or goth; it's moody but not esoteric post-punk, with the kind of melodramatic vocals and watery guitar reverb one associates with mid-'80s recordings of the sort. Occasionally there's a sort of arty, ambient postmodern chamber music feel, and touches like the flute (or flute-like sound) on "For More Than a Day" and "Return Again" liberate this from some of the more clichéd post-punk/goth formulas. ...

Copping a stylistic change eerily similar to pro skater Bam Margera (right down to the Old English initials on the cover underneath his full name) and Kid Rock circa 1999, everybody's favorite hair metal filmmaker returns to the fold with something totally not removed from his glory days of Poison. Right from the get-go, Bret Michaels wastes no time doing what he does best: relating to the average working Joe. "Menace to Society" is a beautiful tone poem dedicated to stickin' it to the man, which if it sounds all too familiar, it's because it is. He did the song way back in Poison's heyday and called it "Nothin' but a Good Time." Nevertheless, "Menace" is that song redux with a Green Day or Hot Topic band du jour feel to it. Think of it as "Nothing but a Good Time 2.0" and you'll be all set. Moving on, "Bittersweet" and "Raine" sound like Poison's "Fallen Angel" and your favorite Poison ballad, respectively. Things keep on non-rockin' with "Forgiveness" until the murky "Loaded Gun" comes on in and reminds you what a Bon Jovi B-side could sound like if Jon and Richie didn't care about what they wrote.
