Shadowthrone picks up right where Dark Medieval Times left off, as Norway's Satyricon completed the foundation of their extreme metal reputation with the release of this sophomore Moonfog effort. After the success of their debut, more resources were devoted to this 1994 follow-up, and the resulting sonic and conceptual improvements are quite noticeable. The tracks are dense and sprawling, the performances drip with black metal conviction, and the total package is a complex and fierce upgrade. The blinding opener, "Hvite Krists Dod," sets into motion a flurry of 32nd-note guitar riffs and sturdy drum patterns that Satyricon maintains with complete authority. The dogged pursuit of cacophonous perfection is a hallmark of this group, and Shadowthrone demonstrates the band's conviction as well as, or better than, any other offering. ~ Vincent Jeffries

| | Immortal At The Heart Of Winter CD (1999)
Shadowthrone
$12.89 At the Heart of Winter marks the beginning of Immortal's second incarnation, paring the band down to the duo of Abbath Doom Occulta and Horgh after the departure of guitarist and founding member Demonaz Doom Occulta due to severe tendonitis in his arms. Thus, Abbath alone took over six-string and songwriting duties (although Demonaz still contributed his trademark fantastical war- and winter-themed lyrics), and Immortal progressed beyond their blurry, hyperspeed, under-produced past into muscular metal maturity, melding frostbitten Norwegian black metal with the intricate riffing and tempo changes of German thrash. Which isn't to say the group abandoned blastbeats or Abbath's throaty reptilian croak; within the lengthy, creatively arranged epics "Withstand the Fall of Time," "Years of Silent Sorrow," and "Tragedies Blows at Horizon" lies a balance of battle-ready blitzkrieg and grandiose, anthemic melodies only hinted at in Immortal's previous output (see "Mountains of Might" on the preceding album, Blizzard Beasts). The material lends breathing room to the drums, with skin-pounder Horgh adding to the album's majestic feel with a diverse, organic performance. At the Heart of Winter also found Immortal forging their relationship with ...
| | Satyricon Dark Medieval Times CD (1994) Import
Shadowthrone
$17.45 Pummeling listeners into submission with their incredible onslaught, Norway's Satyricon include seven intense recordings on DARK MEDIEVAL TIMES.
After spending years toiling in the extreme metal underground, Satyricon broke into the top ranks of their genre with the release of Dark Medieval Times. The debut full-length is loud and sinister enough to satisfy even the most demanding black metal fans. Being an independent offering, this record falls short in the production category. But to the band's credit, the sonic limitations of Dark Medieval Times are only a minimal distraction. The muddled drums, buried vocals, and thin guitars still resonate with bile and negativity, ...
| | Bathory Twilight Of The Gods CD (1991)
Shadowthrone
$15.79 It was almost inevitable that a follow-up release to 1990's watershed Hammerheart album, dealing with very much the same subject (historical themes and pagan beliefs of the Viking peoples), was fated to prove somewhat disappointing; and despite a valiant effort on the part of Bathory mastermind Seth Quorthon, 1991's Twilight of the Gods has often unfairly languished in the shadows of its noteworthy predecessor. For the record, its tracks were even more epic in length and scope, its subject matter even more tragic and depressing, but perhaps the oppressive weight of it all was simply more than most could bear. Still, when removed from this chronological experiment, there's no denying that Twilight of the Gods is one heck of a heavy metal album. Maybe it could have used a little more of the old-school black metal simplicity of early Bathory, but the band's forward momentum was such at this juncture in their career that a look back, however brief, was simply not in the cards. Starting off with the 14-minute glory of the title opus, ...

| | Myrkskog Superior Massacre CD (2002)
Shadowthrone
$13.49 As evident by Myrkskog's new, pointy-lettered, nigh-unreadable logo on the cover of Superior Massacre, the Norwegian band's second full-length is a regression of sorts from the steely, solid black/death of its predecessor, Deathmachine. In fact, Superior Massacre is, more than anything else, a throwback to early '90s American death metal (think Morbid Angel or Suffocation), right down to the cheesy noise intro track, serpentine riffing, and overwrought "art" on the album cover. Myrkskog does its job well -- that is, multiple tempo changes, blasting speed, and razorblade-gargle vocals -- and, like Deathmachine, the songs are convincing, although the sophomoric subject matter (see "Over the Gore," "Blood Ejaculation," and "Bleeding Wrists") is a creative step backward, a notch closer to brain-dead gore metal. Also, main songwriter and guitarist Destructhor -- who is a consummate six-stringer in extreme metal circles -- has taken over vocal duties, and unfortunately possesses a one-dimensional growl that doesn't lend much definition to the songs. Clocking in at a concise 31 minutes, ...

Shadowthrone
$14.45 ALL NIGHT LONG--AN INTRODUCTION, released in 2002, is a tight 11 song catalogue by early prog-metal group Rainbow which includes the songs "Stargazer" and "Stone Cole."
Listeners could easily be fooled into believing that there are several different bands spotlighted on Rainbow's 2002 best-of collection, All Night Long: An Introduction. Starting out as a progressive metal band, then transforming into a radio-friendly rock outfit, and featuring a revolving door of lead vocalists (Ronnie James Dio, Graham ...

Shadowthrone
$17.69 THE CELL was established in 2002 by David Gore (Louisiana, USA)and drummer Milan Milata (Czech Republic) who both had a love for southern rock and blues rock. They wanted to put together a group that created their own style of southern rock and blues, which is largely absent from the Czech Republic. The first three people to be recruited were guitarist Michal Benes, bassist Leos Koudelka and vocalist Veronika Mohaplova. After a few personnel changes, the group now has a total of eight members (three guitarist, ...
