| | Israel Iz Kamakawiwo'Ole Alone In Iz World CD (2001)
Introduction To CD music
$13.29 While the name Israel Kamakawiwo'ole falls trippingly off few tongues, the Hawaiian singer better known as "Iz" was one of the biggest stars in his home state. Iz first came to public attention as a member of the popular Hawaiian group known as the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau. His subsequent solo career brought even greater fame, and countless fans were saddened at his untimely death in 1997. Those who mourn his passing will be gladdened by the posthumous release of ALONE IN IZ WORLD, compiled from ...
| | Carter Family 1927-1934 CDs (2002) (Import) United Kingdom
Introduction To music CDs
$25.79 A comprehensive budget compilation by the dependable JSP label, the five-disc 1927-1934 fully covers the first seven years of the Carter Family's musical career and features recordings that are the basis of the trio's honored place in the country music firmament. The set starts, appropriately enough, with the Carters' six contributions to Ralph Peer's legendary 1927 recording sessions in Bristol, Tennessee, and then chronologically wades through every released side that A.P., Sara, and Maybelle recorded for RCA Victor. ...
| | Glen Campbell Rhinestone Cowboy/Bloodline CD (2002) (Import) Australia
Introduction To songs
$20.09 Raven's 2002 two-fer reissue of Glen Campbell's 1975 album Rhinestone Cowboy and 1976's Bloodline is given three bonus tracks and billed as "The Lambert & Potter Sessions 1975-1976," since these two albums were produced (and occasionally written) by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter and have a distinctive sound unlike many other records in Campbell's catalog. It's not a coincidence that Campbell began working with Lambert and Potter after reuniting with Jimmy Webb for the understated Reunion, since this is a logical step forward from Webb's symphonic, intricate compositions. Lambert and Potter weren't as quirky as songwriters or producers, but they had an excellent ear for songs and had grand concepts, helping Campbell build on the excellent Reunion, as well as songs like "Houston (I'm Coming to See You)," with these two grandly polished, sweeping records. Sonically and thematically, there's not much separating the two records; they work as companion pieces, almost like two halves of a double album, so they work perfectly as a two-fer. Simply put, these two records are ...

| | Moody Blues December CD (2003)
Introduction To CD music
$7.85 One must give the Moody Blues credit for tenacity and a single-pointed focus. For 37 years they've put forth a startlingly consistent series of themes: optimism, a kind of blind-faith spirituality that the universe is in good hands and that people are by and large decent and kind, and love songs that can be a bit twee, but nonetheless connect when one is in the emotional space to hear them. Their music has always been intimate and pretentious in the best sense of the words. December is the Moodies' first Christmas album. The classic lineup has been whittled down to three: John Lodge, Justin Hayward, and Graeme Edge; Ray Thomas decided to call it quits after the band's 2003 tour ended. The band is augmented by unofficial member and producer Danilo Madonia in the studio. This is the most curious of Christmas recordings. December is an album about the spirit of Christmas but, with its lack of carols (though it does feature Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" near the end), it sounds more like another chapter in the Moody Blues' legend, and that's exactly what it is. Like many Moody Blues records since the 1980s, the original songs are nostalgic, pointing listeners back to memories of an idyllic ...

| | Brookville Life In The Shade CD (2006)
Introduction To songs
$11.35 Andy Chase has always been the George Harrison of Ivy. Adam Schlesinger has Fountains of Wayne to show off his pop songcraft muscles, and with her Europurr of a voice and those nouvelle vague looks, Dominique Durand is always going to be the trio's focal point. In Ivy, Chase fades into the background almost by necessity, but his second album as the primary driving force behind Brookville suggests that the singer/songwriter simply isn't the extroverted type. These 13 songs are quietly melodic midtempo reveries, lacking the Continental lounge feel of Ivy's best work, but with ...
