Remember CD music
$18.39 Over the years, the sophomore curse has plagued many talented artists, who showed considerable promise on their debut albums but failed to make good on that promise when they recorded their second albums. Gratefully, that wasn't a problem for Cerrone, whose sophomore album, Cerrone's Paradise, only strengthened his reputation in the Euro-disco field. This 1977 outing is similar to Cerrone's 1976 debut, Love in C Minor, but without sounding like musical recycling. On the original LP version of this album, the 16 minute title song took up all of side one, just as Love in C Minor's first side was devoted entirely to its title song. But "Cerrone's Paradise" is a fine orchestral Euro-disco work in its own right, and the slick but funky piece is far from a carbon copy of "Love in C Minor." Euro-disco fans also found a lot to admire about "Take Me" and "Time for Love," the songs that Cerrone co-wrote for side two of the original Cerrone's Paradise LP. While the exuberant "Take Me" was ...

$12.79 The group's last fully succesful record, mixing soft, romantic sounds ("You Know Like I Know") dressed up in restrained, tasteful orchestrations with harder country sounds ("Homemade Wine"). "Fly Away Home" is probably the best rock number here, and also has room for some very pretty noodling on the mandolin. ~ Bruce Eder

| | Patterson Hood Killers & Stars CD (2004)
Remember CD music
$10.25 Drive-By Truckers' leader, Patterson Hood, wrote and recorded the 12 songs on Killers and Stars in 2001 during what was, by his own admission, a dark and difficult time in his life, though you probably wouldn't have needed to know that to make an educated guess that this was not the work of a happy man. A lo-fi acoustic collection of tunes recorded in his dining room on a four-track, Killers and Stars takes the troubling undercurrents of DBT's songs like "The Deeper In," "Sink Hole," and "Angels and Fuselage" and drags them to the surface, and while one could imagine a souped-up version of "Miss Me Gone" finding its way onto a Drive-By Truckers album, nearly everything else exists in a universe somehow separate from Hood's prior work. But while this sounds less like a full-blown solo album than a set of demos that developed a life of its own (a bit like Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska), Hood's instincts were right for giving these songs a home of their own, because they genuinely deserve one. "Rising Son" and "Old Timer's Disease" are sad but accurate examinations of family from both ends of the generational divide, "Phil's Transplant" is a striking character sketch about a woman who no longer recognizes her husband after he's received a new heart, and "Frances Farmer" and "Cat Power" are meditations on two of Hood's romantic obsessions. A few of these tunes are experiments that don't fully succeed, but ...
| | Sound Of Young New York II CD (2004)
Remember music CDs
$18.05 We huddle in fear, preparing for what seems to be the inevitable. How long until the obnoxious glut of disco-punk compilations fall from the music industry towers on to the public's heads below, just as we've dusted off our trousers from the electroclash catastrophe of 2002? The Sound of Young New York might be the first disco-punk compilation, but it certainly won't be the last. But unlike its ironic, and ultimately untimely electro-punk cousin, this particularly-'80s-sounding alert avoids many of its previous contenders' shortcomings. For starters, the vocalists found here have some real emotion in their inflections. Whether it's Elefant's vocalist giving a quick Morrissey-esque "Uh-uh-oh," on "Bokkie" or the Faint's crooning like Ian Curtis playing hopscotch, it's all much more pleasing to the ears than detached female non-singing (though D'Boldiss offers that here). Musically, disco-punk also has far greater depth, with the genre's finest (though not most hyped) unit so far, !!!, offering up eight-and-a-half minutes of "Me and Giuliani by the Schoolyard." ...
