PSYCHO-SONIC is a 29-song retrospective of garage-rock band the Sonics, whose name was inspired by the Boeing aircraft surrounding them in their hometown of Tacoma, Washington. The collection includes the Sonics' first single, "(She's a) Witch" -- which reportedly holds the record for the best-selling indie single in the Northwest -- plus two live versions of the song.
In an era when the raw sounds of '60s garage-rock heroes the Sonics have been featured in an SUV commercial, it's possible to underestimate the fierceness of their straight-for-the-jugular attack. That is, until you hear the quintessential Sonics compilation, PSYCHO-SONIC. Here are 29 tracks of garage-rock grandeur featuring Tacoma's favorite sons in all their unfettered glory, tearing into a mix of blues, R&B, proto-psychedelia, and frantic rock & roll that's often gotten them labeled as "the first punk rock band."
Back in the mid-1960s, the legendary Sonics took rock'n'roll by the scruff of the neck and thrashed it to within an inch of its sorry life, leaving a legacy of some of the most savage, visceral recordings ever made. Psycho-Sonic album
$10.75 Years before the term "grunge rock" was coined, the Melvins were laying down the style's heavy, plodding foundation in the Pacific Northwest. This disc presents two of the notorious trio's earliest records, 1989's OZMA and its predecessor, GLUEY PORCH TREATMENTS. One of OZMA's initial ...

| | Chicago V CD (1972) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Psycho-Sonic songs
$6.05 CHICAGO V (from 1972) was in some ways the end of the "old" Chicago, pointing the way towards a smoother, mellower style they'd adopt in the years to come. V still has jazz and progressive elements ("A Hit By Varèse," "Dialogues"), political commentary ("State of the Union"), and melodious, sunny, horn-laden pop (the huge hit "Saturday In The Park"). The playing was still tight and clean, and the vocals still earnest and heartfelt, but a lighter mood began to replace the urgency of the band's late-'60s recordings.
With four gold multi-disc LPs and twice as many hit singles to its credit, Chicago issued its fifth effort, the first to clock in at under an hour. What they lack in quantity, they more than make up for in the wide range of quality of material. The disc quite literally erupts with the progressive free-form "A Hit By Varese" -- which seems to have been inspired as much by Emerson, Lake & Palmer's Tarkus (1971) or Yes circa Close to the Edge (1972) as by the Parisian composer for whom it is named. Fully 80 percent of the material on ...
| | Television Marquee Moon CD (1977) Remastered; Digipak
Psycho-Sonic album
$10.89 New York's 1970s punk was markedly different to that of Britain. Rather than reject the past, American groups deconstructed its forms and rebuilt them with recourse to the music's strengths. Television's leader, Tom Verlaine, professed admiration for Moby Grape and the folk rock of early Fairport Convention. Elements of the latter appear on this album's title track, which offers a thrilling instrumental break, built upon a modal scale. Verlaine's shimmering guitar style provides the set's focus, but his angular compositions are always enthralling. A sense of brooding mystery envelops the proceedings, and Marquee Moon retains its standing as one of the era's pivotal releases.
Rhino's 2003 expanded edition of Television's seminal debut, Marquee Moon, doesn't add much on the surface -- in addition to the de rigueur liner notes and loving packaging, all standard fare on serious reissues here in the early days of the 21st century, there are a mere five bonus tracks. Some might complain, but dealing ...
