Reissue of debut album from blues-rock act featuring Rory Gallagher. Originally released in 1969. 1992 release. Standard jewelcase.
The fact that they, like so many late-'60s contemporaries, were molded in the image of Cream has often been cited to diminish the stature of Irish power trio Taste. But, all things being equal, it's impossible to dismiss their fine eponymous debut based solely on obvious source of inspiration, nor, by any means, the singular talents of the band's creative and performing focal point, vocalist and guitarist Rory Gallagher -- barely 20 years of age upon its release in 1969. After opening with the menacing staccatos and power chords of the forward-looking, proto-metal classic "Blister on the Moon," Taste turn right back around and indulge their retro-fueled Brit-blues influences with a bottleneck run through Leadbelly's "Leavin' Blues" -- a show of contrasts that speaks volumes to the breadth of Gallagher's instrumental versatility. The blues keep coming with the guitarist's self-penned showcase "Sugar Mama" and a more restrained acoustic "Hail," then the hard rock fires are stoked once again with "Born on the Wrong Side of Town" -- a track whose regional folk music accents did much to foment Gallagher's enduring status as a blue-collar, Emerald Isle legend. And so it goes until the album's conclusion: with alternating glimpses of past and future musical tendencies peppering remaining tracks "Same Old Story," "Dual Carriageway Pain" (both gritty blues-rockers showing riffs that sometimes smacked of the then brand-new Led Zeppelin), "Catfish" (a traditional blues standard turned monster jam), and "I'm Moving On" (a spare but spunk-filled Hank Snow cover). Ultimately, it's a stylistic stew that would arguably get honed to better focus and achieve greater distinction from the competition on Taste's second album, a year later. But who's to say that Taste didn't have almost as much influence as Cream on future bands such as Rush, whose early records are quite literally mapped out on this release -- a worthy addition to collections of this exciting period in British rock. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Taste album
$8.65 While the title track is the album's best-known song, SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH proved to be another in a long line of 100% filler-free records from Ozzy and co. Highlights included the creepy "Who Are You?," plus the Tony Iommi riff-mongers "A National Acrobat," "Killing Yourself to Live," and "Sabra Cadabra," a song that Metallica would cover on its 1998 release GARAGE INC. You'll also find one of Sabbath's most haunting yet serene instrumentals, "Fluff," as well as the melodic album-closing rocker, "Spiral Architect." SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH is quintessential heavy metal.

| | Black Sabbath Never Say Die! CD (1978)
Taste CD music
$6.09 By the end of the '70s, though Black Sabbath remained a top concert draw, its albums had become increasingly erratic and sub-par when compared to its earlier master works. Singer Ozzy Osbourne's growing disillusionment with the band had reached a boiling point, especially after it took so long to complete 1978's NEVER SAY DIE, the original line-up's final album. Though the album's title might suggest that the band had reconciled its differences (Osbourne had already left the band once previously, only to return shortly afterwards), the turmoil spilled over onto the recording.
The album-opening title track remains the record's best-known track, as it was featured on Ozzy's popular 1982 solo live album of Sabbath material, SPEAK ...
| | Black Sabbath Master Of Reality CD (1971)
Taste music CDs
$8.95 The album's opening track, "Sweet Leaf," a salute to one of the band's favorite smokeable substances, contains one of metal's heaviest guitar riffs, courtesy of Tony Iommi. Another eternal band favorite is the grim, post-nuclear war tale "Children of the Grave." Vocalist Ozzy Osbourne is in fine voice on "After Forever" and "Lord of this World," while the more tranquil "Solitude" and the instrumental Iommi compositions "Embryo" and "Orchid" offer a bit of variety. Though not quite as influential as PARANOID, MASTER OF REALITY remains one of heavy metal's founding gems.

| | Black Sabbath Paranoid CD (1971)
Taste songs
$8.69 PARANOID proved to be Black Sabbath's most focused, consistent, and successful record. Leaving behind the amorphous, extended jams of their debut for focused songs and a more structured sound, Black Sabbath virtually wrote the book on heavy metal with the ominous, unforgettable riffs, thunderous rhythms, and dark themes on this release. There are some up-tempo rockers, the famous title track for one, but for the most part PARANOID oozes along like a bad dream, as on the slinky, creepy opener, "War Pigs," or the lumbering thud of "Iron Man" (which boasts one of the most indelible electric guitar riffs in rock history).
The album's title is apt: PARANOID is filled with an edgy aggression and lyrics about war, insanity, death, and destruction. Ozzy Osbourne's ...

Taste album
$17.35 This reissue contains 2 bonus tracks from RAW, LOUD, LIVE EP.
Released at a time when the band was pretty much falling to pieces, Live (Hot Curry and Wine) combines tracks from Holocaust's influential debut, The Nightcomers, with a number of new songs and obscure tracks. Most crucially, this set contains possibly the only commercially available version of the band's classic "The Small Hours" (famously covered by Metallica -- and a corker it is too), along with some quality material ("No Nonsense," "Lovin' Feelin' Danger," "Forcedown Breakdown") from their rare ...

Taste CD music
$9.85 The second and final studio recording by Irish guitarist Rory Gallagher's neo-Cream trio reins in the playing to focus more on songwriting. The material is a virtual grab bag of blues-rock styles, moving from driving rockers ("What's Going On," "I'll Remember") and basic boogies ("Morning Sun," "If I Don't Sing I'll Cry") to a bottleneck blitz ("Eat My Words") and a pair of acoustic ballads. There's a pronounced jazzy ...

$12.09 Fourteen years after her last record, singer Lee Wiley came back for one final studio recording. Although she does a good job on "Indiana" and "I'm Coming, Virginia" and the backup band (which includes trumpeter Rusty Dedrick, clarinetist Johnny Mince, trombonist Buddy Morrow, and pianist Dick Hyman) is excellent, in general this is a disappointing ...

| | Collective Soul From The Ground Up CD (2005) Digipak
Taste album
$8.85 Initial pressings of FROM THE GROUND UP will include a Collective Soul guitar pick.
Includes rare tracks and acoustic versions Collective Soul's hits.
Though Collective Soul was often lumped in with the legions of second-string grunge bands that followed in the wake of Nirvana and Pearl Jam's massive success, astute listeners always knew that the group was about crafty pop songwriting more than overblown angst. It seems natural, then, that leader Ed Roland's tunes work just as well in a stripped-down setting as they do accompanied by a wall of slickly produced guitars.
FROM THE GROUND UP was recorded on a whim in only two days, in an effort to capture the group and a batch of their (mostly) new songs in a fresh, unadulterated state. The sound quality and performances here are the equal of anything Collective Soul has done. "Compliment" starts with some sparkling, soulful ...
| | Storyville : Ben Webster CD (2006) (Import) Denmark
Taste CD music
$12.85 This 13-cut set in the Storyville Masters of Jazz series is a showcase of Ben Webster at the very end of his career, from 1967-1970 recorded in Europe. There are a number of stellar players on Storyville Ben Webster, including Dexter Gordon, Palle Mikkelborg, Tootie Heath, and of course, a slew of European sessions players who are truly the cream of the crop. Webster is featured in numerous settings from trio, quartet, quintet, and larger, to units where he is backed by a small string section. Of all the swing and bop era saxophonists, Charlie Parker included, no one blew over string sections like Webster. His lyricism is so utterly tender and understated that he literally trounces all other players who did sessions like this. Check cuts like "Come Sunday" or the other ballads here, such as "Old Folks," "In a Mellotone," and "Going Home." This set is one of those special cases where a recording makes the case that a truly seasoned veteran goes out at the top of his game, rather than in decline. ~ Thom Jurek

$9.49 That Doug Pinnick is one busy man, as 2005 saw him appear on a new King's X release (Ogre Tones), issue his third solo album (Emotional Animal), and also have time for the self-titled debut by an all-star '80s hard rock/metal collaboration, the Mob. Although Pinnick handles both vocal and bass duties in King's X, Pinnick focuses solely on singing here -- and is joined by with ex-Winger bassist Kip Winger and guitarist Reb Beach, Night Ranger drummer Kelly Keagy, and keyboardist Timothy Drury (who has played with everyone from the Eagles to Whitesnake).
