When Nirvana and Pearl Jam exploded commercially in the early '90s and alternative rock became mainstream, a lot of '80s headbangers fell by the wayside. Pop-metal hair bands (Poison, Warrant) and gothic-themed fantasy metallers (Iron Maiden, King Diamond) both went out of vogue, and in this brave new rock world, the headbangers who were considered cutting edge embraced alternative metal (which could be anything from Ministry to Sevendust to Rage Against the Machine). But Doro is one '80s survivor who has kept plugging away; she isn't headlining Madison Square Garden, but still caters to a loyal group of die-hard fans. Released in 2002, Fight finds a 37-year-old Doro continuing to sound quite assured and passionate. The former Warlock vocalist makes a few alterna-metal-ish moves here and there, especially on the title track and "Descent" (which employs Type O Negative's Peter Steele). But Doro doesn't get nearly as far into alterna-metal as -- just to give one example -- Mötley Crüe graduate Tommy Lee. Cryptopsy's second album and its last with original vocalist Lord Worm, None So Vile offers just about everything a listener could want from an extreme death metal recording. It's incredibly tight, fast, and complex; the riffs are well-placed and darkly catchy; the guitar solos are completely over the top; and the vocals -- a mix of psychotic low-end growls and tortured screams -- are suitably intense and scary. Combine those ingredients with Lord Worm's creative handling of death metal subject matter (you'll have to consult the lyrics, since the vocals are indecipherable), the sparing but effective use of samples, and the simply awe-inspiring presence and stamina of drummer Flo Mounier, and you have the makings of a classic album. The brief 32-minute playing time is wholly appropriate and helps compensate for the album's only mentionable flaw, which is that the lack of dynamic variation leads to a slight feeling of sameness that sets in midway through. Besides arguing over which B+ or A- tracks are missing ("Why did they include "'Talk to Me'" instead of "'Charisma'"?") the only thing bad you can say about the two-disc Gold is that its cover art is too much in the style of Universal's Millennium Collection series. The near-perfect track listing deserves a better face than this generic, part-of-a-series artwork, but chuck that and the short, hyperbole-filled essay and you're left with make-up era as good as it gets. Think of a big hit and it's here -- in its live version if that's what's called for -- while the filler is so well chosen you just know the compilers have a Kiss Army membership patch somewhere in their dresser drawers. Laid out chronologically, Gold snaps up three or four key tracks from each golden-age album, gives the mighty Destroyer a little extra attention, gets more picky from Dynasty on, and breezes through the solo albums with only one song each from the four of them (which is being really kind to Peter Criss).
