A finely crafted selection of easygoing mid-tempo funk numbers and soul ballads, Philadelphia vocalist Brandi Wells' debut album is one of the strongest in the WMOT catalog. The Top 40 R&B hit "Watch Out" is good, but there's a lot better in the moody swayer "I Hate to See You Go"; the bright, Motown-influenced track "Falling in Love"; and the album's second single, "What Goes Around Comes Around." Wells' gliding style combines influences of Deniece Williams' soprano tenderness with Phyllis Hyman's alto tenacity, but the phrasing and tone are distinctly her own. She conveys power without needing dramatic belting, with sensitivity barring excessive delicacy. Unfortunately, the masters were not preserved well, as CD reissues by both Unidisc and Hot Productions lack a certain crispness. Unidisc's is superior, though, for the inclusion of the extra track "Standing on the Outside Looking on the Inside" and 12" mixes of "Watch Out" and "What Goes Around Comes Around." Any fans of Philly soul and solid '80s soul, in general, will want to delve into this overlooked gem. ~ Justin M. Kantor

| | Mariah Carey Merry Christmas CD (1994)
Watch Out CD music
$8.49 At this stage of her career Mariah Carey does not need to prove herself, but her voice is so powerful that with each new recording she, once again, reminds you: "Listen to what I can do." Vocal gymnastics and Christmas songs are not often thought of as a compatible combination, but on MERRY CHRISTMAS Mariah jumps, climbs, crawls, twirls and dashes her way through both traditional fare and original Christmas songs.
She shifts through styles, offering fans from all musical camps a gift of their own. Her "Silent Night" shows off a studied vocalization where liquid phrasing is key. "Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)" shows off a dynamic voice that is hard to match. She has fun with the Phil Spector goodie "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)," a song straight out of '60s girl-group heaven. There is even a "Joy To The World" medley mixing the old and the new--the traditional Christmas song and the Three Dog Night hit. And, as usual, her gospel-voiced background singers are out in full force.
There are two ways to enjoy this album. One is to sit back and revel in Mariah Carey's vocal fireworks, and the other is to pour yourself a glass of egg-nog, get cozy by the tree and have yourself a MERRY CHRISTMAS.
Recorded at the Hit Factory, New York.

| | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
Watch Out music CDs
$15.15 Shakira's brand new English album She Wolf is an uptempo pop album. It is all about synthesizers and electronic concepts, all mixed with the world sounds that we are used to from Shakira.. sounds from countries like India, the Middle East and her home country of Colombia. She Wolf features a predominantly English track list with a follow up album of new and unique repertoire in Spanish to come in 2010. The title track "She-Wolf " boasts the infectious and energizing sound that made Shakira a household name, with a slightly more dancey/ electronic beat (about 125 beats per minute). Though most tracks on the upcoming album will be in English, Shakira chose to service the Spanish version of the first single, "Loba", two weeks before the English single is launched.
Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. "Darling, ...

| | Bechet, Sidney & Martial Solal When A Soprano Meets A Piano CD (2009)
Watch Out CD music
$21.49 Bechet was at the peak of his September fame when, while waiting to record in a Paris studio, he happened to overhear a young French-Algerian pianist. Bechet was so taken with Martial Solal’s playing that he told Charles Delaunay he’d like to record with him some day. Delaunay, father of jazz discography and founder of the magazine Jazz Hot, knew that the history of jazz is laden with missed opportunities, and he decided it might as well be some day soon. Thus this music came into being, at two sessions in March and June of 1957, and it was some of the finest of Bechet’s late years. There were, Delauney states in the original liners notes, no preliminary rehearsals. Bechet and Solal simply agreed that “they would prefer to records standards and ballads” – that was all. Bechet was approaching 60; Solal was 29. The others on the first session were Americans in their middle 20s. There were no problems, though Solal was identified with the modern movement and drummer Al Levitt had studied with Lennie Tristano and worked with Lee Konitz, Stan Getz and Paul Bley. These Foolish Things, the first tune recorded, was begun at 2:35 p.m. and finished in two takes. No second takes were required for the remainder of the program, which included seven more numbers. The last note sounded at 4:30. Professionals were at work, enjoying themselves and each other and the task at hand. No need for loquacity – the longest track runs 3:45 (it was the first recorded), but none seems too short. The June session featured a new rhythm team. Bassist Pierre Michelot, 28, would soon gain international recognition as co-leader, with Bud Powell and Kenny Clarke, of The Three Bosses, a working trio. Clarke, 43, had taken up permanent residence in France the year before. Though known as the founding father of bebop drumming, he was no stranger to Bechet, having first worked and recorded with him in 1939, then again ten years later when both were in Paris. The day was very hot, but that was the sole source of sweat: Six tracks were set down between 7:20 and 8:50 p.m., and the album was completed. It was first issued in the U.S. in 1958, and Down Beat (which just a few years earlier had proclaimed on its cover: “Bechet Plays Like A Pig: Michel Legrand”) gave it 4 ½ stars. The reviewer, Martin Williams, said, among other right things: “This is neither a curiosity nor a stunt but a respectful meeting of individuals. It is also a lesson for anyone who has prejudices about jazz styles.” The lesson, obvious as Bechet and Solal made it, was not well heeded, but the current crop of jazz listeners seems less inclined to put musicians ...
