Brand new English release. Twenty marks the twentieth year since Lynyrd Skynyrd's debut album, but perhaps a more relevant yardstick is that it is the fifth record the group has released since reuniting in the late '80s. Prior to recording Twenty, the group added two new members -- ex-Blackfoot Rick Medlocke and former Outlaw Hughie Thomasson -- virtually making the band a Southern rock supergroup, and that's part of the problem. There are too many egos involved to make the album truly captivating -- especially since the songwriting is usually undistinguished -- but occasionally, the star power gels and results in some hot rock & roll. In other words, specialists and aficionados will find plenty of stuff to enjoy here, but most casual fans will think that it's all been said before. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine TWENTY, the title of Lynyrd Skynyrd's 1997 release, was a reminder that 20 years had passed since the tragic plane crash that killed Lynyrd Skynyrd bandmembers Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and Cassie Gaines. It also marked the first time that ex-Blackfoot guitarist Ricky Medlock appeared on a full Skynyrd studio album as an official member (he was actually an early member of the band prior to their '73 debut). Highlights include the guitar jamfest "Bring It On," "How Soon We Forget," and "None of Us is Free." While not a classic like Skynyrd's '70s output (SECOND HELPING, STREET SURVIVORS, etc.), TWENTY showed that the band was still alive and well in the '90s.

$12.85 Perhaps the least known of the late-'70s L.A. pop acts, the Last rose from the ashes of the Los Angeles club scene alongside bands like 20/20, the Knack, the Nerves, the Plimsouls, et al. Releasing their debut album on a small, albeit influential, indie label didn't help them gain exposure outside of California, but the music contained on this platter is as brilliant as anything that came from that era. Remastered from the original master tapes with lyrics, photos, new liner notes and a bonus track, 'The Rack (Reprise)'. Bomp Records. 2003.

$12.39 Division of Laura Lee battens its hatches tighter and shades the milk darker for Das Not Compute. $11.85 Mashlin: Aaron Harvey (vocals, guitar); Joe Knipp (guitar); Glen Wilson (bass guitar); Jason Burrows (drums). This Orlando group's effort is teeming with a whiny teen-angst rock flavor as the band wallows in songs such as "The Shore," which would instantly bring to mind Simple Plan, with lead singer Aaron Harvey's timbre like that of Pierre Bouvier. When Mashlin attempt a softer, winding track with a gritty underbelly, "Arrive Like a Thief," the band fares better -- but not much better. The emo characteristic is readily audible on efforts like "Bending Light in New Directions," which builds on Glen Wilson's bassline but opts for a softer melody à la the Cure. Fans of early Sloan circa "Coax Me" would definitely get a kick from the sweet and powerful "Autumn." Mashlin veer too far into the melancholia during "66 Books of Cleansing," ...
| | Prime Of Antonio Carlos Jobim CDs (2005) Box Set
Twenty
$47.49 (3-CD Set) Three of Jobim's classic 1960s albums together in one boxset.
Personnel: Antonio Carlos Jobim (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano); Antonio Carlos Jobim; Oscar Castro-Neves (acoustic guitar); Jorge Ferreira da Silva (flute, alto saxophone); Mauricio Einhorn (harmonica); Deodato (piano); Pinduca (vibraphone); Sergio Barroso , Don Payne (acoustic bass); Edison Machado, Dom Um Romao, Paulinho Magalhaes (drums); Russo Do Pandeiro (percussion); Luis Eca, Oscar Neves. Liner Note Authors: Stan Cornyn; Terri Hinte; Hal Halverstadt. Photographers: Ed Thrasher; Sherman Weisburd. Arrangers: Gaya; Claus Ogerman; Deodato; Nelson Riddle. DBK Works (a division of Water Records) boasts on the cover of this box set that this is the "prime" of Antonio Carlos Jobim. The three albums here are all from the mid-'60s, beginning with Jobim and Terri Hinte's authoritative, scholarly yet passionate liner notes -- spread in three parts over the three discs and making a real case for each of the recordings here -- Wonderful World of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Love, Strings and Jobim, and A Certain Mr. Jobim. All were recorded for Warner Brothers, none of them measuring up to the spare grace of Jobim's initial American recording for Verve, Composer. Hinte's liner notes claim that the first of these was recorded under traumatic circumstances: arranger Nelson Riddle's son was recovering from a serious auto accident; and that Jobim was asked to play guitar instead of piano, and to sing. It's a good recording, but no masterpiece. It cannot be argued, however, that the songs themselves on each of these three records have been covered dozens of times by singers and musicians all over the world. Also, Love, Strings and Jobim is not a Jobim record proper, though his name has been pasted all over the cover of various reissues with different titles. He presented numerous Brazilian composers and musicians -- including Marcos Valle, Eumir Deodato, Oscar Neves, and Baden Powell among them -- on this set and their recordings. Gaya and Deodato arranged this session. He contributed only two ...
