In Pursuit Of The 13th Note album
$12.79 Louise Rhodes' acrobatic little-girl-lost voice and Lamb's sparse background atmospheres dare you to make the inevitable Portishead comparison. It's a mean and dirty trick, though. Scratch the surface and you'll find that Rhodes and instrumental maestro Andrew Barlow have little in common with Bristol's noir-chic contingent. LAMB carves out a strange space for the Manchester duo between the hectic breakbeat bluster of drum n' bass and the jazz-and-blues-inflected chamber folk of Joni Mitchell and John Martyn.
Lamb's points of reference are strange but wonderful. Rhodes' delivery combines the traits of a torch singer, an R&B siren, and an acoustic singer/songwriter into a ravishing and complex vocal identity. ...
| | Gucci Mane State vs. Radric Davis CD (2009)
In Pursuit Of The 13th Note CD music
$14.30 Just half a year from the release of the mysteriously unauthorized catalog clearinghouse/label kiss off Murder Was the Case, Gucci Mane returns with The State vs. Radric Davis, his latest on Warner Bros.' Asylum imprint. True to form, the bling-loving rapper brings the club-ready Dirty South rap, complete with trunk-rattling bass and trademark synths. Featuring production by Drumma Boy, Mannie Fresh, Shawty Redd, and Scott Storch, amongst others, it's no surprise that the album is able to perfectly capture the low and slow Southern sound. Some of the best beats come by way of Bangladesh (producer on the Lil Wayne single "A Milli"), who drops some seriously roll ...

| | Tindersticks Vol. 2 CD (1995)
In Pursuit Of The 13th Note music CDs
$12.59 A string of adjectives come to mind when trying to describe the music of the Tindersticks: romantic, ironic, moody, lush and cinematic, among them. There is a touch of camp to the dark, graceful beauty of these songs, as shimmering waves of vibes, chiming guitars, funeral parlor organ, bold horn arrangements and rich, lilting strings create a surreal, late-night lounge atmosphere. The band employs equal doses of the Velvet Underground, late-period Roxy Music and movie soundtrack textures, while vocalist Stuart Staples affects a smooth, lugubrious Scott Walker-esque croon honed to a dramatic mumble, giving the ensemble a distinctive sound.
The band's second album lives up to the expectations generated by their dazzling debut. There is less of a rock element here. The hushed, spooky ambience conjured by tracks such as "A Night In," "No More Affairs," and "Cherry Blossoms," with its ghostly, double-tracked vocals, stakes out new, evocative territory for the band, heightened by Staples beautiful, though often indecipherable baritone murmur. The influence of film music is felt in the almost Ennio Morricone-esque "Vertrauen II" and "Snowy In F# Minor," ...
| | Tony Bennett: Artist's Choice CD (2003)
In Pursuit Of The 13th Note songs
$10.15 During his six decades of professional life, Tony Bennett has proved himself to be a vocalist with tremendous dedication to popular song. Appropriately, his volume in the Starbucks/Columbia Artist's Choice series finds him choosing selections from that canon, all of them given distinctive, definitive ...
| | Michael Carpenter Rolling Ball CD (2004) Import
In Pursuit Of The 13th Note album
$29.79 Australian singer-songwriter Michael Carpenter's ROLLING BALL includes "Emily Says" and "Day Before."
Michael Carpenter produced some of the best singer/songwriter rock & roll records around the turn of the millennium, but until 2003's Kings Rd. Works he was handling most of the instrumentation, recording, and production entirely himself. It seemed that having a full band in the studio with him would provide an extra dose of power and energize his normally humble efforts, but for some reason the end result was a record that sounded more constrained than his prior work and came off as a bit of a disappointment. He retrenched with the follow-up, 2004's brilliant Rolling Ball, a dizzyingly diverse record that borrows from a cornucopia of styles and bursts with enthusiasm. Rolling Ball doesn't represent a break from form so much as an increase in focus: this is still the same Michael Carpenter who's been releasing rootsy and earnest pop/rock ...

In Pursuit Of The 13th Note album
$9.89 Now that the Supersuckers have become a productive cottage industry thanks to the good people at Mid-Fi Records (namely the band itself), 'Suckers frontman Eddie Spaghetti has given us his second solo album in as many years with 2005's Old No. 2. Like his previous solo disc Sauce, Old No. 2 is dominated by covers, though Eddie wrote a whopping four new songs for this set (double his output for Sauce), and since this album boasts a significantly lower goofiness quotient than ...
