Be Bop Deluxe: Charlie Tumahai (vocals, bass guitar, percussion); Bill Nelson, Simon Fox, Andrew Clark . Personnel: Bill Nelson (vocals, guitar, percussion); Andrew Clark (keyboards, percussion); Simon Fox (drums, percussion). Recording information: EMI Abbey Road Studios, London, England (06/1976-07/1976). Things had changed for Be Bop Deluxe by the time of the group's fourth album. The band that turned up in glam rock regalia on its 1974 debut, Axe Victim, was in suit and tie on the cover of Modern Music in 1976. Inside, the band's transformation into a sophisticated pop group seemed complete. Arrangements were still ornate, but the songs were dominated by their highly imagistic lyrics, and as often as not, Nelson was borrowing ideas from the Beatles. It didn't quite work, despite pleasant numbers such as "Orphans of Babylon" and "Kiss of Light," perhaps because a true pop sensibility requires a gift for simplicity that Nelson has never exhibited. The album charted high in England and made the Top 100 in the U.S., but it was Be Bop's peak, not its breakthrough. ~ William Ruhlmann 1976's MODERN MUSIC was Be Bop Deluxe's fourth album, and--in many ways--the band's most refined and sophisticated. The compositional ambition and stylistic flourishes of glam rock still played heavily into the band's sound, recalling David Bowie and early Roxy Music. But guitarist/singer/songwriter/frontman Bill Nelson's ability to balance multi-part songs and complex arrangements with pop hooks is realized to excellent effect here. "Kiss of Light," for example, though dominated by a shape-shifting sensibility and Nelson's soaring, multi-tracked electrics, comes back again and again to its memorable, repeating chorus. Nelson also has a penchant for dramatic, fantasy-tinged ballads ("The Bird Charmers Destiny," for example, contains lyrics about crystal balls, gypsies and white swans), and unabashed, pop-inflected rock "Bring Back the Spark." Be Bop Deluxe's hodge-podge aesthetic (MODERN MUSIC contains traces of everything from heavy metal to jazz to soft rock to R&B), the strength of musicianship, the artful balance of Nelson's arrangements, and the high flown ambition of it all impresses, making this a high point in the band's discography. This overlooked gem is a must for fans of the glam and progressive rock of the era. Things had changed for Be Bop Deluxe by the time of the group's fourth album. Stellar Outing Incredible riffing and melody backed up by lyrical poetry places this album as one of the best. An incredible mix of rock, jazz lines and vocal artistry demonstrate that Be Bop Deluxe staunchly defines art rock credibilty. This is one for the ages. Te Best of Them All MODERN MUSIC is by far the best of all the bands albums. Bill Nelson perfected the Be Bop Deluxe sound and music over the course of 4 albums and this gem is the crowning glory. Conceptualized and very creative, MODERN MUSIC flows seamlessly from such great songs as "Kiss of Light", "Honeymoon On Mars", "Forbidden Lovers". If you never bought a Be Bop Deluxe album this is the best one to get. No regrets. Submitted by a reviewer (Toronto, CAN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Bill Nelson at his best First bought album in 1976 while living in England. Wore that one out, finally found C.D. Excellent guitar work by Nelson. This album is somewhat in the mode of a Pink Floyd album, each song running into the next, but very different style of music. Made to be listened to while chillin out, with a little buzz. Bill Nelson is a guitar genius I have been a Be Bop Deluxe fan for over 30 years and this album is pure genius. The band is full of very proficient musicians with Nelson leading the way. This album weaves it's way thru an almost dream state of moods and motions. There is not a bad track on the bunch. This is band and album did not get it's just deserves during the time it peaked. BUY IT!! you won't regret it. Submitted by mauimark (Lake Forest, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Purchase Modern Music CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Be Bop Deluxe Futurama CD (1975)
Modern Music
$9.79 Import pressing of 1975 album from British rock group featuring Bill Nelson.
Includes three bonus tracks. Be Bop Deluxe: Bill Nelson (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Charlie Tumahai (vocals, bass guitar, percussion); Simon Fox (drums, percussion). The original version of Futurama was a little weak on songwriting content, though long on virtuoso music passages. This expanded reissue is a partial improvement, though not because it addresses those problems; rather, it's just got more of something different, in this case the more commercial (and quite beautiful) single version of "Between the Worlds," plus a scintillating live version of "Maid in Heaven," ...
| | Be-Bop Deluxe Axe Victim CD (1974) Bonus Tracks
Modern Music
$9.45 Reissue of their first album to be released on EMI's Harvest Record label. It came out during the glam rock period of 1974, and has often been compared to Bowie's Ziggy Stardust album, in particular with ballads such as Adventures In A Yorkshire Landscape, with lyrics referencing Bill Nelson's locality of Wakefield. The album shows that Nelson was still uncertain of the route that Be Bop Deluxe would take and so offers up an eclectic mix of sometimes jazzy and sometimes metal songs. Some of the album has co-production credited to John Leckie, who was at this time working as an Assistant Engineer at Abbey Road and whom Nelson had befriended during the long recording sessions
Includes three bonus tracks. Be Bop Deluxe: William Nelson (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, piano); Robert Bryan (vocals, bass guitar); Ian Parkin (guitar, acoustic guitar, ...

Modern Music
$9.99 Includes three bonus tracks. Be Bop Deluxe: Bill Nelson (vocals, guitar, harmonica, tubular bells, percussion); Andrew Clark (keyboards); Charlie Tumahai (bass guitar, percussion, background vocals); Simon Fox (drums, percussion). Considered by many to be Be-Bop Deluxe's finest album, SUNBURST FINISH (1976) finds the British art-rock band filling out its sound with the addition of keyboardist Andrew Clark. While Clark brings new sonic textures to the table, the ...

| | Be-Bop Deluxe Live! In The Air Age CD (1977) Bonus Tracks
Modern Music
$9.75 Following a long American tour, the band decided to record some of their UK concerts so took a Recording studio on the road and ended up with the live album "Live! In The Air Age". The album was originally released on double white vinyl, with one record being the LP and the other a 12” EP. The album includes a number of concert highlights such as the sarcastic Fair Exchange, the leisurely Adventures in a Yorkshire Landscape, and the monolithic instrumental version of "Shine", which was originally a much shorter and far less monolithic B-side.
Be Bop Deluxe: Bill Nelson (vocals, electric guitar); Andrew Clark (vocals, keyboards); Charlie Tumahai (vocals, bass guitar, percussion); Simon Fox (drums). Recorded in 1977, LIVE! IN THE AIR AGE draws most of its set list from the previous year's SUNBURST FINISH. It's clear that Be-Bop Deluxe is invigorated by the concert setting, charging through vibrant renditions of its songs and providing far more instrumental muscle and improvisation than on the studio ...
