Catatonia's major-label debut, Way Beyond Blue, is an infectious set of jangle pop, injected with the punkish attitude of indie rock. The guitars ring as if they were recorded in the late '80s, but it has a muscular backbone, and vocalist Cerys Matthews has a tough edge to her voice, which never makes the music sound weak. And a good majority of the songs -- from "Sweet Catatonia" and "You've Got a Lot to Answer For" to "Painful" and "Way Beyond Blue" -- are excellent, shimmering pop gems, making it an impressive debut. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Debut album from the highly acclaimed Welsh indie pop/ rockoutfit led by female vocalist Cerys Matthews. 12 tracks, including the singles 'You've Got A Lot To Answer For','Bleed', 'Sweet Catatonia' and 'For Tinkerbell'. 1996 release. Way Beyond Blue music CDs
$14.38 Glitter and Doom Live, a double-disc set, marks Tom Waits' third live effort in his nearly 40-year career, each one summing up his career to the point of its release. The first, Nighthawks at the Diner issued in 1975 on Asylum, is regarded by many as one of the greatest live albums of all time. The second was Big Time, released during his tenure at Island in 1986. The musical performances on disc one of Glitter and Doom Live were culled from Waits' historic sold-out tour of the U.S. and Europe. He compiled and sequenced the set himself, intending to make them sound like a single show. The material leans, understandably, on his recordings with the Anti label. There are stellar performances here, such as "Get Behind the Mule" from The Mule Variations, "Trampled Rose" from Real Gone, and a haunting version of Leadbelly's "Fannin Street" from Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards, to mention just three of the 17 cuts here. But he goes back to his Island albums too. For instance, there are completely re-visioned readings of "Lucky Day" and "I'll Shoot the Moon" from 1993's Black ...

Way Beyond Blue album
$10.49 A HARD DAY'S NIGHT presents a fictionalized day in the life of the Beatles as they give a performance on a live television show. Filmed just a month after their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964, this film--the Beatles' first--introduces us to the unique personalities of each member of the band. The film opens with the Fab Four boarding a train mobbed with adoring young fans (mostly women) as they attempt to travel to the television studio in London. The antics of the band during rehearsals and makeup application provide a large part of the comic material in this feature, though there ...
| | King Crimson In The Court Of The Crimson King CD (1969) Bonus Tracks
Way Beyond Blue CD music
$102.39 Initial pressings featured a limited edition, cardboard-stock gatefold sleeve and unpublished archive photos.
KC's debut album introduced to the world a group that threw various '60s genres into a blender and set the results afire with a blowtorch. One of the pioneers of the progressive rock movement that began in the late '60s and flourished in the early '70s, King Crimson was arguably the most consistently creative band in the genre. On IN THE COURT they blend wispy, Donovan-ish folk-rock with Wagnerian grandeur, mind-bending heavy rock, and even a free- jazz sensibility. Greg Lake's vocals are effectively theatrical but more restrained than in his later ELP work. Robert Fripp was just learning how to make mincemeat of a chord progression, but he's alternately lyrical and frenetic as the moment requires.
The extended jams on cuts like "Moonchild" are light-footed and inventive, never ponderous, thanks largely to the crisp, jazzy drumming of Michael Giles. "20th Century Schizoid Man"'s bone-crushing ensemble ...
| | Magazine Where The Power Is CD (2000) (Import) United Kingdom
Way Beyond Blue music CDs
$7.59 An accurate title, Where the Power Is successfully trots out the bouncier, assaultive side of Magazine. They were one of the best in the early era of post-punk, rarely doing anything mediocre. Released simultaneously with the triple-disc Maybe It's Right to Be Nervous Now, it oddly duplicates much of 1987's Rays and Hail compilation. So why not keep Rays and Hail in print and just reissue it with additional liner notes or something? Well, the answer's commerce. A new title means new sales, and even completists will apprehensively shell out again for the same batch of songs. Literally -- there's only a handful of songs here that aren't on Rays and Hail. Though some of the versions may differ (album version versus single version), only compulsive completists give a toss about such things. Confusingly, Rays and Hail did remain in print when this was issued, even getting a repressing! Did someone in Virgin's catalog department fall asleep? Fine as an isolated release for the newbie, Where the Power Is just makes things quite confusing for the rest, basically a baffler amongst the rest of Magazine's discography. Not a great deal can be debated as far as it being representative is concerned, so in that manner it succeeds. ~ Andy Kellman
The definitive guide to one of British post-punk's most important bands. Magazine's unique sound, while clearly part of the New Wave was largely unclassifiable. Too pop to be avant and too avant to be pop. ...
| | Music Of Labi Siffre CD (2001)
Way Beyond Blue songs
$13.95 A concentrated collection of mid-'70s gold, The Music of Labi Siffre comprises virtually all of the eccentric singer's best LP, 1975's Remember My Song, along with more material from 1975-1976. Siffre was a rangy, often contradictory artist, which accounts for his lack of appeal. Beat-heads will find some ace material here (like the classic sample source "I Got The..."), but won't be interested in the dated, overly produced ballads; pop fans may like his crooning on "Second Time Around," but will find the funkier songs aimless. When Siffre had a good riff going, though, he framed it perfectly (even when he rode it to death), whether it's the squelchy harmonica of "Sadie and the Devil" or the sly slide guitar of "Doctor Doctor." Siffre's straight pop material was very erratic, with highs including a few sparkling nuggets of '70s pop ("Second Time Around," "Love-A-Love-A-Love-A-Love-A-Love," and "Would You Dance?," the latter a precursor of Wham!'s "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go") but ...
