| | Abdullah Ibrahim African Sketchbook CD Abdullah Ibrahim Discography of CDs
African Sketchbook is a superb example of the kind of solo concerts Abdullah Ibrahim (then known as Dollar Brand) performed early in his career. They were lengthy, non-stop affairs with pieces strung together end on end, sometimes repeated, sometimes with interpolations from Monk or Ellington, and always supremely creative and moving. He would often introduce the evenings with a composition for flute, as is the case here with the gorgeous "Air." After that, it's wave upon wave of songs. Some are rhythmically propulsive numbers with Ibrahim vamping for all he's worth with the left hand while deftly evoking aspects of South Africa with the right. The songs tend to have a basis that may strike Western listeners as gospel-related while, in fact, it's gospel that shows these same African roots. Other pieces have tinges of 20th century European classical music and some, like "Sadness," are simply and astoundingly beautiful. When the album ends with a repetition of the invocational "Salaam -- Peace -Hamba Kahle," one indeed feels as though having been on a whirlwind tour of a small portion of Africa. The recording quality leaves a little to be desired, but the wonderful music more than makes up for it. Highly recommended, especially for those who came to Ibrahim's music later in his career and who are unfamiliar with his early, arguably more substantial work. ~ Brian Olewnick Abdullah Ibrahim African Sketchbook Songs | 1. | Air |

$14.79 Unless you are a rattlesnake or a stinging scorpion, you probably never heard of where James Allred came from but as soon as he was big enough to swing a guitar over his shoulder and thumb down a semi, he was on his way to Big D (Dallas, Texas). | | Todd Marcus In Pursuit Of The 9th Man CD (2006)
African Sketchbook
$16.45 Bass clarinetist and composer Todd Marcus is one of the few artists worldwide to focus exclusively on the use of the bass clarinet in jazz. Jazz Times contributing writer David Adler writes, āMarcusā¦brings a saxophonic rigor to the bass clarinet while also generating enough sonic power to front a nine-piece ensembleā¦With his melodic imagination and technical aptitude on an unorthodox horn, Marcus has something truly new and personal to offer.ā Self taught in jazz theory and composition, Marcus features his work in the Todd Marcus Jazz Orchestra which utilizes a 6-horn front line of bass clarinet, alto sax/flute, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, and trombone, plus piano, bass, and drums. Comprised of many of the area's up-and-coming musicians, the band combines the broad sounds of a large ensemble with the extended soloing typical of a quartet. The debut recording In Pursuit of the 9th Man (Hipnotic Records) features original music which Marcus arranges to highlight the rich sounds and textures of the ensemble. The music often incorporates ...
