| | Poco Forgotten Trail (1969-74) CDs (1990)
A&M Gold Series CD music
$15.95 This compilation contains 38 songs, including many new remixes from original master tapes, 6 previously unreleased songs, alternate versions of 3 others, and a comprehensive 36 page booklet, with historic liner notes and photos.
This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set and you'll hear why. The Forgotten Trail (1969-1974) culls tracks from Poco's first eight albums, as well as unreleased cuts and singles. From the classic anthem "Pickin' Up the Pieces," which kicks things off, through "You Better Think Twice," "C'mon," "Kind Woman," ...

| | Very Best Of Herb Alpert CD (1999) Import
A&M Gold Series songs
$17.45 This late-'90s compilation of Herb Alpert provides a straightforward anthology of highlights from his three-plus-decade career, both with and without his ubiquitous Tijuana Brass. While the title sums up the contents, The Very Best of Herb Alpert (1999) does suffer from the odd omission and questionable entry -- which is all the more noticeable as the whole thing clocks in at under three-quarters of an hour. Alpert is as close to a true renaissance man as was possible in the latter half of the 20th century. In addition to racking up nearly two-dozen Top 40 hits, Alpert co-founded A&M Records alongside Jerry Moss, and became the label's chief producer, talent scout, arranger, and bandleader. Somewhere ...
| | Souther-Hillman-Furay Band Trouble In Paradise CD (1975) Souther Hillman Furay Band
A&M Gold Series album
$10.65 With producer Tom Dowd, known for his work at Atlantic Records, at the helm, the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band seemed to be distancing itself a bit from its country-rock roots with its second release, the appropriately titled Trouble in Paradise. Here the band expands on the funkier aspects of its debut album, while at the same time slipping even closer to the middle of the road. On that record it was former Poco frontman Richie Furay who was responsible for the highlights, but this time out it's J.D. Souther, who penned four of the LP's nine tracks, who leads the way, with "Prisoner in Disguise" (recorded that same year by Linda Ronstadt) and the title ...
