THE IN SOUND FROM WAY OUT! is an album of instrumentals, many of which were originally released on the albums CHECK YOUR HEAD and ILL COMMUNICATION. The Beastie Boys: Adam Horovitz (electric guitar); Adam Yauch (bass); Mike D (drums). Additional personnel: Eugene Gore (violin); Mark Ramos Nishita (keyboards); Eric Bobo (percussion). Engineers: Mario Caldato, Jr., The Beastie Boys. Japanese reissue has four additional mixes CD contains 4 bonus tracks. Originally released through the Beastie Boys' French fan club, The In Sound From Way Out! is a collection of the group's funky instrumentals from Check Your Head and Ill Communication, with a couple of new tracks thrown in. The Beasties have a flair for loose, gritty funk and soul-jazz, and the stuttering, greasy keyboards of Money Mark give the music an extra edge -- he helps make the music sound as authentic as anything from the early '70s. Fans of the band's dynamic wordplay might find The In Sound From Way Out! a disappointment, but anyone who grooved on the wildly eclectic fusions of Check Your Head and Ill Communication will find the album endlessly enjoyable. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine A testament to the talent of the Beastie Boys is that even a compilation of instrumental cuts, all previously released (although some admittedly on limited-run singles), could remain relevant to the music world. Not only is THE IN SOUND FROM WAY OUT intriguing, but it could be argued to be the greatest statement of the threesome's musicianship. In their existence, the Beasties have transmuted themselves from a streetwise hardcore band, to a bratty white-boy rap collective, to a more sincere rap trio, to indie-funk-soul-punk-rap innovators. These instrumental interludes started popping up in the last of these phases, and play like groove-funk soundtracks to '70s films that never were. From most artists, a collection such as this one would seem self-serving and pretentious, but these are the Beastie Boys. Wordless wonders like "Eugene's Lament" and "In 3's," rightly deserve a spot on the musical landscape. No, this is not a calculated marketing strategy to extract money from consumers, but a CD that pretty much had to be; these cuts the Beastie's laid down on separate albums were meant to be played together, and THE IN SOUND FROM WAY OUT completes that puzzle.
Entertainment Weekly (4/19/96, p.78) - "...this all-instrumental EP--13 tracks of jazzed-out percussion, blaxploitation synth, and the occasional orientalized violin, each of which would serve credibly as any hero's theme song--should leave no doubt about where the grooviness really comes from." - Rating: A- Melody Maker (3/16/96, p.39) - Bloody Essential - "...the Beasties have now recast themselves as Seventies funksters....easily among their most impressive work..." Musician (8/96, pp.88-92) - "...Revisiting the Meters, Sly, Charles Earland, Willie Bobo, Melvin Sparks, and Richard Holmes, THE IN SOUND is fatback-flavored, Latin-tinged funk....[played] with a gritty fluency and fiery musical knowledge..." Stakes Is High is often overshadowed by its predecessors in the De La Soul discography and, upon its release, it was lost in a summer of great import and consequence. Released on the same day as Nas' alter-ego epic It Was Written and sandwiched between albums like Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt and OutKast's ATLiens, it's very possible that Stakes Is High didn't get its rightful burn in respective tape decks and CD players. Aside from that, hip-hop was fully embroiled in the East Coast vs. West Coast beef, something in which the Native Tongues vanguards were seeming nonplayers. But it's under these conditions that De La offered an album that was not only sonically excellent ...

This is an Enhanced CD which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Pet Shop Boys: Neil Tennant, Chris Lowe. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The third in an infrequent series of albums made up of remixes and new creations aimed at the dancefloor, Disco 3 isn't geared toward casual listeners or casual Pet Shop Boys fans, for that matter; these songs target nightclubs and perhaps listeners who crave high-tech musical sheen for speeding down European motorways. Par for the course on Disco 3 are punchy bass beats, snippets of Neil Tennant's vocals, standard but classy house effects, and massive dollops of New Order inspiration. Indeed, virtually every track on the album seems like an experiment in mixing dancier New Order atmosphere with new millennium electro-clash dynamics. Except of course the low-key finale, a piano version of "London," which reimagines the song as a performance in a jazz club at midnight. The Felix da Housecat remix of "London" couldn't be further stylistically from the piano version, but its "Can't Get You Out of My Head" feel and relentless beat make for equally invigorating listening. Tennant shines ...
