| | Benoit/Freeman Project CD (1994)
Nek
$12.49 The Benoit/Freeman project is a reunion of sorts, as both smooth jazz icons worked on 1986's landmark Rippingtons debut Moonlighting and together wrote Benoit's hit "Every Step of the Way." Since then, Freeman's career with that band and Benoit's as a solo artist spearheaded the smooth jazz movement while expanding the rules on just what modern jazz is. The new project combines the radio-friendly pleasures inherent in their separate endeavors with an exciting expansion and interplay of fresh and innovative ideas. Though the focus is clearly on the interplay between guitar and piano, the two are surrounded by all-star backing talent like Nathan East, Abe Laboriel, John Robinson, and former Rippingtons members Steve Reid and Tony Morales. Much attention was directed to Kenny Loggins' wonderful vocal performance of "When She Believed in Me," but the Phil Perry sung version of "After the Love Is Gone" is superfluous; it's beautiful but adds nothing to the original Earth, Wind & Fire arrangement. Instrumental highlights include "Mediterranean Nights" (a seven-minute meditation featuring symphonic elements and Freeman's rich electric guitar work), the percussive "Swept Away," moody "The End of Our Season," and a remake of "Mirage," one of Moonlighting's most beautiful tunes. The two seem to have been too busy for a follow-up, but smooth jazz could definitely benefit from another tandem brainstorm like this. ~ Jonathan Widran

| | Ay-Kherel Music Of Tuva CD (2004)
Nek
$23.29 Perhaps the Tuvan craze in world music is dying down a bit now, more removed from the flurry stirred up by Genghis Blues. There's still a fair bit out there to be heard nonetheless, with groups beyond the well-known Huun Huur Tu and Kongar-ol Ondar. Case in point is this album from Ay-Kherel, a troupe headed by Vladimir Soyan. The album progresses through the obvious khoomei to instrumental pieces and various folk songs, both in solo and ensemble formats. Much of the music is similar to what would be heard on other Tuvan albums, with some exceptions in execution. No one in this troupe is up to the same standards in throat singing as ol-Ondar, but they aren't bad. They don't have the vocal range of some of the old long-song specialists, but they aren't bad (especially Vladimir's daughter Lilya Soyan). They aren't the most virtuosic on the igil or khomuz, but they aren't bad. They're a perfectly good troupe overall, very good generalists as opposed to virtuosic specialists. As such, it makes for a nice primer to the music of Tuva, and a good lead-in for further exploration in the rich music of the locale. ~ Adam Greenberg

| | Girija Devi Diva CDs (2002)
Nek
$28.29 This two-disc set documents Girija Devi's nearly unbelievable performance at the 2001 Saptak Music Festival. Accompanied by tabla master Sukhvinder Singh and sarangi maestro Ramesh Misra, Devi sings in her now-trademark thumri and khyal styles over the course of five selections. The khyal, "Raag Jog," that opens the performance is the most stunning piece on it, as Devi moves through differing rhythmic and mood patterns that offer portraits of the different stages of devotion. Most of the pieces are medium tempo rhythmically, set in either tintaal or ektaal, and all are improvisations using and blending many forms. It is no less than breathtaking and at its best, it is awe-inspiring. ~ Thom Jurek
Varied and distinctive forms of vocal music have emerged over the centuries to suit different tastes and environments, reflecting their sources of patronage as well as a fruitful and intimate link to folk art forms. This CD presents one of the most accomplished contemporary exponents of the thumri style of vocal music, Girija Devi. Hailing from the city of Benares, the home of spiritual music forms, Girija Devi now teaches at the Music Research Academy. As a performer, she has won international acclaim for her contributions to the development of classical music culture, awarded the Padma Bhushan, the highest Indian government award for musical excellence. Girija Devi is renowned for her ability to interpret with her voice the spectrum of shades and colours of emotions inherent in the poetry which she sings. She is one of the few living artists with an equally versatile command of all the major styles of vocal music such as khyal, thumri, tappa, dadra, hori, chaiti, bhajan and kajri. In her singing, she threads together different strands of the vocal forms, highlighting the specialities of each form and emphasising their devotional aspects. The thumri style is characteristically sung in religious celebration. Its emphasis on lyrics and playful improvisations can be interpreted as crystallising the emotions of devotion, mystical love and the pain of separation. Thumri is often scorned by purists of Hindustani classical music due to its semi-classical mode and choice of light ragas, which do not necessarily adhere to the rigid rules of melodic development. However, it was always hugely popular among music aficionados. This gentle, melodious form of vocal music has come a long way from its traditional renditions in the courts and salons of kings and courtesans in Northern India. Until the end of the 19th Century, Lucknow was the only recognised gharana or school of thumri. Later forms of thumri were similarly named after their place of origin, such as those created in Farukhabad, Itawa, Bareilly, Mathura, Rampur, towns and kingdoms west of Lucknow. It was in Delhi, where hundreds of musicians and dancers were patronised in its royal courts, which the styles of thumri and khyal rapidly developed. Even as Delhi's fortunes began declining after Aurangzeb's death in 1707, the Mughal emperors succeeding him continued to show interest in the lighter forms of music like khyal and thumri, preferring these to the more sober and meditative Dhrupad form. With the collapse of aristocratic patronage and the salon culture of performance giving way to modern concert halls, not only the upholders of the genre but also its basic goals and techniques underwent changes. The aesthetics of the vocal style gradually moved ...

Nek
$12.15 I’ve been saying “You know one day I should do this or that with my music”. Well that day has arrived and thankfully by the grace of the internet and all of it’s world wide distribution abilities, I’m presenting “Spun Jazz”, my self produced and recorded mix of eclectic Jazzy, Pop influenced Smooth Jazz with a hint of R&B. Is that a genre? “Spun Jazz” is mostly instrumentals with a couple of vocals tracks for good measure! Veteran sax men Gene Cannon and Jerry Kenney spice up tracks and deliver tasty solos when called on and to add wonderful touches to my first CD release. Hey..I hope someone out there likes at least one song. That’s a start. Please give me feedback. I want to hear it all, from Good to Great! Alright, if you hate it I’ll listen to you too. How else am I going to learn how to ignore people! Seriously, I’ve heard many things on digital distribution sites from folks trying real hard to guys and gals who really have their stuff happening. I fall somewhere in the middle I’d suspect... and with my first foray on to the world wide stage, I’d like to say “thanks for giving me a try”. I want to thank the people that made this CD possible. Johnnie Robinson, Gene Cannon, Marshall Gillon, Jerry Kenney, J.J. Johnson, Allon Sams, Alex Cutri, Alanna Cutri, Dianne Cutri, and Fran and Frank Cutri Sr. By the way, the photos used on the front and back of the jewel case are from a great LasVegas vacation I took Feb 06 with 5 of my closest ...
| | B-52's Wild Planet CD (1980)
Nek
$5.99 If you have any doubt that WILD PLANET was intended as the ultimate in new-wave party albums, just turn your attention to the opening "Party Out of Bounds." The song sums up everything that's great about the B-52s, the kitschy, minimalist dance band that somehow managed to overcome its primitive musicianship and crank out a big pile of hit records. On one level, the track is an exuberant invitation to cut loose; on another, it's a slightly veiled homage to S&M, set to an irresistible beat and edgy guitar track.
WILD PLANET's next eight tracks continue along the same lines. The B-52s keep the dance beats coming while amusing any party people who take care to pay attention to the group's witty, oddball lyrics. "Runnin' Around," "Private Idaho," and "Strobe Light" are the other standout tracks here, but nearly every song has something to recommend it. Casual fans may want to skip WILD PLANET and the band's equally impressive eponymous debut album and jump directly to TIME CAPSULE, an 18-track best-of package. But those who choose to dig a little deeper and pick up the original ...
