(1 Customer Review)
John Zorn's squawking, post-bop invective brings out Derek Bailey's rowdier side in this popular Knitting Factory date from 1995. "Morning Harras" begins with a reflective prelude, its solemnity underscored by the Mingus-like gravity of Parker's double bass and by Bailey's plangent plucks and stabs. Once Zorn's blowing picks up to full gale-force strength, Bailey seems to be all but mashing his way across the fretboard in response to the saxophonist's hyperbolically articulated lines. "Morning" has broken, and HARRAS rarely lets up from there.
"Noon Harras" builds from a soft bustle of trio activity to a hectic climax. Zorn's darting and provoking cries circle higher, like an inquisitive gull surveying a hotel demolition, crumbling Bailey's composure, ruffling Parker, and precipitating avalanches of concrete-gray dust and rubble. Vertiginous bass turns offset Bailey's tingling harmonics as "Evening Harras" opens. Zorn is at first a barely felt presence, but his spiraling bop exultations soon leap from the improvisatory clatter. His playing is energetic, fluid, and euphonious--an excellent musical foil for Bailey's terse and somewhat obstinate phrasing. The resulting 23-minute romp achieves a wonderful atmosphere of open interchange. Don't miss the hidden track, a brilliant solo Bailey benediction.

Harras album
$18.39 This stunning, double-disc set selects some of John Zorn's best compositions for Masada (his acoustic jazz group that blends Klezmer melodies with avant-garde improvisation) and adapts them for chamber ensemble. In addition to his duties as composer, arranger and producer (he does not play on the album), Zorn assembled some of the finest progressive musicians around--clarinetist David Krakauer, keyboard player John Medeski, violinist Mark Feldman, cellist Erik Friedlander, guitarist Mark Ribot, and trumpeter Dave Douglas, among others--into different group configurations.
The arrangements of these compositions are markedly different than their original versions. Whereas the Masada quartet performances are rhythmic, jazz-based, and often frenetic, the music on BAR KOKHBA is dark, spare, and evocative, bordering more on modern classical than jazz. In fact, except for Ribot's surf guitar on "Mahlah," and Medeski's swirling Hammond on "Paran," many of these performances ...

| | John Coltrane One Up, One Down: Live At The Half Note CDs (2005) Remastered
Harras music CDs
$18.95 The dramatic, spiraling inventions of Tyner lend a frenetic element to Coltrane's already intense lines, while Jones and Garrison find and rearrange nearly every rhythm and counter-rhythm imaginable. There are only four tracks here (spread out over two discs), but each--whether it's the fiery title track or the exhilarating take on "My Favorite Things"--is a study in artistry.

| | Children On The Corner Rebirth CD (2003)
Harras album
$12.95 Even more come across the time-worn paths of ether and obscurity: Children on the Corner is a collective made up of ex-Miles Davis sidemen from his eclectic years that include Sonny Fortune, Michael Henderson, Badal Roy, Ndugu Chancler, and Barry Finnerty. The band is led by keyboardist and composer Michael Wolff, the only non-Davis personnel. Rebirth was recorded live over two nights at the popular Oakland, CA, nightspot Yoshi's. The program is a set of tunes from Davis, as well as some group and Wolff originals. The album kicks off with one of the most inspiring readings of Josef Zawinul's "Directions." For over 21 minutes, Fortune and Wolff explore the outer reaches of Davis' loose harmonic universe. The small vamps and riffs are deceptive in that they provide a framework for all kinds of harmonic interaction across numerous planes. Dissonance and groove enter into a beautiful dialogue as Fortune blows the living hell out of his ax. Wolff's fills with the right hand to provide a reference not for returning, but for jumping off, and Finnerty's razored chords and riffing patterns keep blues and funk in the forefront of the groove itself. "New York Girl" is done is two parts here with the band's own "Oakland Raga" -- featuring Roy's shimmering tables on the tip of the greasy funk underneath inserted between sections of Wolff's own compositions. "Madimba" and "Tone Poem" are melodic tonal studies that borrow from Davis' ...

$14.79 Digitally remastered by Adrian Von Ripka (Bauer Studios, Ludwigsburg, Germany).
In 2001, the Germany-based Winter & Winter label began reissuing the impressive JMT catalog in sequential fashion. One of the first of these reissues is trumpeter Herb Robertson's inaugural solo effort, recorded in 1985. The production is repackaged with Winter & Winter's customary textured cardboard jewel case and includes an insert depicting the original LP cover artwork. Here, Robertson's golden-toned horn is beautifully recorded and enhanced by the 24-bit digital remastering, although JMT was well-known for its superior audio quality anyway. And while this release might be considered relatively tame compared to the horn man's late-'90s and early-'00s free jazz-style extravaganzas, his torrid ...
| | Daturah CD (2005)
Harras album
$9.85 The proclamation on their website that "Daturah is an instrumental five-piece from Frankfurt, Germany, playing some kind of ambient noise rock" doesn't come close to describing the hallucinatory delights found in their epic three-song, 44-minute debut. "Datura" is the botanical name for Jimson weed, a powerful psychoactive nightshade used in Native American rituals, the use of which results in the psychological effects summarized best in the mnemonic phrase "blind as a bat, mad as a hatter, red as a beet, hot as hell, dry as a bone, the bowel and bladder lose their tone, and the heart runs ...
