5 stars In Memory of Dom
I was glad to discover the Bush album was available, online, but I didn’t get around to ordering it until I heard that Dom Troiano died. Bush wouldn’t have been without Dom, and anybody who saw these guys remembers a special night in their lives; I’m sure. I’d seen Mandala in Calgary a few years earlier, so when Bush played the Apollo in 1969, some of us were ready for greatness. I can’t imagine anyone being disappointed, either. Where Mandala had been great with flashy and crashy effects, Bush was simply the tightest, funkiest, coolest guitar trio. It was honest and straight. They did every trick in the book, but it was fresh and inventive. The great Roy Kenner was happy now to stand behind his conga drums and sing his parts. Whitey Glan and Prakash would go on to greater fame, but what they did together in Bush is still them at their best. The extra songs, “Live at the Bitter End”, make the CD worth the time and hassle of buying, online. It makes it real vivid. It might have been a Wednesday night, not a lot of people in the place, nevertheless, the band blazes. At the end of each dyno-blastic tune, 8 or ten people clap. For a finale, Whitey Glan puts the play in playing drums for a mind and cymbal bending drum solo. So friggin’ great. Then, all these years later, Roy says to the near-empty club, “We’ll be back for one last set.” Such is the bitter-sweet end. Anybody who’s thinking about buying this knows what it is. If you haven’t heard the record in years, it’s worth it. The bonus tracks make the CD a big bang for the buck.

5 stars The Original Bush from Toronto
One of the great Toronto bands of the late sixties, early seventies. They have a clean funky sound and the rhythm section is as tight as you will find anywhere. Domenic Triano shines on lead guitar. He really deserves more recognition as one of the great rock guitarists. Several live bonus tracks are included and the live version of Cross Country Man should be required listening for any aspiring musician. These guys can play.

EVERCLEAR, AMC's finest hour and one the '90s' most powerful albums, is simultaneously lush and searing, heartache and despair borne out in elegant arrangements that combine fragile prettiness and soul-baring howls of pain. Multi-instrumentalist Bruce Kaphan rose to the occasion of his production debut. The canyons of reverb on the instruments are strangely appropriate, highlighting the almost decadent, tragically beautiful feel of the songs. Keyboards, pedal steel, and acoustic guitars drift like abandoned ships swirling around in a colorfully tempestuous sea full of unknown nautical demons. Guitarist Vudi contributes some of the most artful, non-traditional sounds ever concocted by a "rock" axeman. The album begins with a slow, soulful lament to a love who's either sleeping or dead, before ...

There must have been something in the water in 1970s Memphis. Not only did the town turn out an unprecedented amount of great R&B, it also hosted a sterling power-pop scene including Big Star, Tommy Hoehn, Van Duren, and Anglophile quartet the Scruffs. Led by McCartney-esque vocalist Stephen Burns, the Scruffs mixed Beatle worship, Big Star-ish rockers, and Raspberries-like pop on their 1977 debut album, WANNA MEET THE SCRUFFS? which became a power-pop cult classic. The Scruffs split up in '79 (though Burns would lead a new version decades later) but the melodic charms and punchy pop hooks of this album are a timeless treat. 2008 digitally remastered edition of the debut album from the Memphis band that tried to ride the New Wave of Power Pop of the time, but failed to catch fire across the country. Their hook-laden Raspberries-like legacy is not forgotten by fans of the period and this CD release includes two bonus tracks: "She Say Yea" and "Break The Ice". Cherry Red. This is the debut album by the Southern power-pop group. Features ...

Automatic Man CD  (1976)

Space rockers Automatic Man (featuring Santanna's dynamite drummer, Michael Shrieve) get their 1976 debut remastered in all its progressive glory. After making his name with Santana (remember his solo on "Soul Sacrifice" at Woodstock?), drummer Michael Shrieve did some experimenting with Stomu Yamashta and then turned to this four-piece, which was led by singer/keyboard player Bayete. Their sound is progressive rock with a spacy, spiritual bent (titles include "Atlantis Rising" and "Interstellar Tracking Devices"), which means swirling synthesizers, biting lead guitar playing (courtesy of Pat Thrall), and lyrics about angels and heaven and how "worldly things keep us apart." The drumming is good and it's high in the mix, but after his prominent role in Santana, one expected more in the way of leadership from Shrieve, and this group ultimately was as faceless as the alien image on the front cover. ~ William Ruhlmann Digitally remastered edition of this ...

Truth be told, the Trembling Blue Stars routine was getting kind of stale by the release of Seven Autumn Flowers in 2004. With that album they crossed the line that divides reliable and predictable; no longer did the morose lyrics, melancholy vocals, minor chords and cheesy synths make a positive impression. Luckily for fans of the band, The Last Holy Writer is a comeback of sorts, certainly an improvement, and maybe even one of their finest records. How did they do it? It's hard to say because on the surface it seems like not much has changed sound or mood-wise. There's still a preponderance of downbeat lyrics and Bob Wratten hasn't suddenly traded in his mope for a smile, no fear of that anytime soon. The building blocks of their sound are mostly the same too. What makes a difference here is a boost in the overall energy level from unrelenting gloom to mostly sad, a slightly expanded sonic palette that makes room for field recordings and a wider range of drum sounds, and most importantly, some really good songs. Chief among them are the Beth Arzy-sung "Idyllwild" which, much like Helen Reddy on the last album, fairly bursts out of the speakers like sun through the clouds, "Darker, Colder, Slower," which has the kind dramatic shifts in dynamics and tone TBS Records need more of, the laid-back near-country rocker "The Tenth of Always," and the almost happy sounding "Say Goodbye to the Sea" (of course the words are devastatingly sad, but the drum program and the bells will have you smiling through the ...

This is a pretty cool combination of two Bobby Vee albums from 1960/1961 that are stronger together than they were separately. With Strings and Things is the softer of the two, though it has its cool rock & roll moments, while Sings Hits of the Rockin' '50's generally focuses better on rock & roll, even if it veers decidedly toward pop. Underground Oldies, Vol. 2 CD  (1998)

Bush songs
CD $12.09  4.5 stars Audio Samples
Compilation albums of R&B singles from the '60s and '70s usually contain either familiar hits or recordings so obscure that nobody has heard of them. Collectors love the rare singles. Usually, the companies only pressed a few hundred copies, which is why they're so scarce. The Underground Oldies series are different. These recordings, while rare and unknown to many, got played on local radio stations, some received spot play around the country. The tracks are slicker and better produced then the rare birds you find on Northern soul collections. Companies exhausted their bankrolls on production and had little left for promotion. Everyone involved hoped DJs would like them enough to give em' a few spins and generate interest. A bottle of Jack Daniels or Jim Beam was the only payola these companies could afford, so they had to make good records. Underground Oldies, Vol. 2 differs from Vol. 1 because it contains more unknown tracks by well-known artists; the first volume had more unknown tracks by obscure artists. Obscurities by Billy Stewart "I'm No Romeo," written by ...

Recording information: Morris Sound, Tampa, FL. Photographer: Robert John. THE SOUND: Kenny McGee is back in action with the release all the fans have craved since the beginning. Produced by the late Kevin Dubrow of QUIET RIOT fame this was the album recorded before the ENIGMA RECORDS debut. Dokken and Quiet Riot are surely influences throughout these early recordings. THE RESULT: A band that played the clubs from the early days and got their first album produced by Kevin Dubrow is not doing too bad and that’s just for starters. Their 2nd album was produced by Frankie Sullivan from Survivor and even though many fans believe the self titled Julliet album in 1990 on Enigma was the bands first release, it truly was not.
