Ultimate Christmas Album, Vol. 1: KLUV is an impressive 25-track collection of seasonal favorites assembled from a wide range of eras and genres. Highlights include Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," Chuck Berry's "Run Rudolph Run," Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas" and Gene Autry's "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer"; while not a definitive holiday collection, it includes enough hits and obscurities alike to be a worthwhile purchase nevertheless. ~ Marvin Jolly
Volume two of Collectables' Ultimate Christmas Album gathers more classic pop and rock holiday tunes, including the Beach Boys' "Little Saint Nick," Gene Autry's "Here Comes Santa Claus," and Diana Ross & the Supremes' "White Christmas." Most of this volume's best-known tracks are by traditional pop crooners, such as Dean Martin's "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!," Bing Crosby's "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas," and Burl Ives' "Holly Jolly Christmas." However, less-familiar tracks like the Echelons' "A Christmas Long Ago (Jingle Jingle)," Augie Rios' "Donde Esta Santa Claus," and Barry Gordon's "Nuttin' for Christmas" prevent the collection from being too predictable. It's not exactly a straightforward holiday-hits compilation, but The Ultimate Christmas Album, Vol. 2: WCBS FM 101.1 balances enough standards and obscure tunes to make it a unique collection. ~ Heather Phares

'Spoken Answer To A Silent Question'Milwaukee Noise Ensemble BOY DIRT CAR Issues First New Recordings In Nearly 20 YearsNov. 23, 2007 - In one of the most unlikely reunions of recent years, seminal Milwaukee noise group Boy Dirt Car announces the release of its first new recordings since 1988. To be released Dec. 1, Spoken Answer to a Silent Question brings together original members - co-founder Darren Brown, Keith Brammer and Dan Kubinski (Die Kreuzen), T.S. Wahlen and Dave Szolwinski - and, consistent with Boy Dirt Car's classic revolving-door lineup, brings in several newcomers, including longtime Milwaukee mainstays Karl Paloucek and Jeff Hamilton.For much of the 1980s, Milwaukee was home to Boy Dirt Car's brooding sound. Influenced as much by Wisconsin's brutal winters and the dark tales of its North Woods as by any of their avant garde contemporaries, the group forged a sound different from other so-called 'industrial' bands of the day. As one reviewer once put it, 'Boy Dirt Car creates a sound not like being in a car crash, but of being under one. 'Just as it cadged its industrial instrumentation from scrapyards and roadsides, BDC culled its members from across Milwaukee's vibrant music scene of the time, building up an intense following and a reputation as one of the city's most potentially hazardous acts.
