Between the wide ranging effects of the September 11th terrorist attacks and losses of a more personal nature, Missy Elliott turned UNDER CONSTRUCTION into a project that simultaneously found her getting her lyrical freak on as well as trying to take everyone back to hip-hop's earlier, more carefree times. ...
| | Rob Swift Under The Influence CD (2003)
Can't Stop Dancing, Vol. 10 album
$14.05 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed DJ Rob Swift.
The latest and best entry in the Six Degrees label's Under the Influence series is a DJ mix by the well-respected X-Ecutioners alumnus and East Coast Turntable Champion Rob Swift, who has selected a brilliant program of rare vintage funk and soul recordings by such obscure masters of the genre as the Vibrettes, Chuck Carbo, and the Explosions, along with more recent material by Davy DMX and DJ Quik, and a couple of tracks from Afro-Cuban vocalist Bobi Céspedes. As with any good turntablist set, half the fun is the source material itself, all of which works together as a sort of historic kaleidoscope of funk, and half of it is in Swift's artful juxtapositions and virtuosic cutting and scratching. Swift is maybe just a bit too respectful and restrained in his ...

| | Atlantic Starr Radiant CD (1981) Holland
Can't Stop Dancing, Vol. 10 CD music
$24.65 Both creatively and commercially, Radiant was a major step forward for Atlantic Starr -- and the person they can thank is James Carmichael. This 1981 release was the first album that Carmichael produced for the band, whose two previous LPs (Atlantic Starr in 1978 and Straight to the Point in 1979) were decent but not great. Atlantic Starr needed to get to the next level, and Carmichael obviously gave the White Plains, NY, combo the sort of guidance, direction, and constructive criticism it needed to make the transition from decent to excellent. Radiant gets off to an impressive start with the haunting single "When Love Calls," and the material ...
| | Totimoshi Milagrosa CD (2008)
Can't Stop Dancing, Vol. 10 music CDs
$12.69 In a rare display of earnest self-awareness, Bay Area trio Totimoshi were the first to admit that 2008's Milagrosa -- their fifth full-length and first for Volcom Entertainment -- was something of a transitional project; comprising vocalist/guitarist Tony Aguilar and bassist Meg Castellanos' determined effort to not only distance themselves from once dominant post-grunge influences (particularly drawn from the Melvins and Nirvana), but to incorporate their shared Latin heritage into what could loosely be deemed a concept album. The son of migrant farm workers, chief songwriter Aguilar reportedly drew from personal experience to convey the feelings, if not the precise meanings, behind his generally very oblique lyrics throughout Milagrosa, and, at their most cynical, distressing, and distorted laments like "El Emplazado," "Last Refrain," "The Whisper," and "Dear," to painfully express the nomadic immigrant's gloomy outlook for this world, and frail hopes for the next. Thankfully, the album isn't alI doom and gloom from start to finish (almost, but not quite), as the storm clouds admit just a glimmer of sunshine's hope within the rhythmic thrust of "Milagroso" and the yearning melodies of "Little Bee," then fuel what's left with a grim sort of determination that wills the human spirit to make the best of what life brings. And amid ...
